Description

PATENT OFFICE.
STEPHEN STOUT, OF TREMONT, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN SPRING-BEDS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 139,627, dated June 3, 1873 application led May 1o, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, STEPHEN STOUT, of Tremont, in the county of Tazewell and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Spring-Bed, of which the following is a speciication: i
In the accompanying drawing, Figurel represents a plan view of my improved springbed; Fig. 2, a vertical longitudinal section of the same, on the line x, Fig. l; Fig. 3, an end View, partly in section, on line y y, Fig. 1.

The object of my invention is to construct a cheap and durable spring-bed, which is very eiective in use, but of simple construction. My invention consists of grooved lateral supports for double-acting spiralsprings, which are connected by slats or cane-pieces, and held in position by straps passing through the springs.
In the drawing, A is the outer frame ofthe spring-bed; B, the lateral supporting-pieces, which are appliedsuitably to the sides of the frame. The upper part of piece B is alter nately supplied with longitudinal recesses a, of the shape and size of the slats or canepieces G and transverse grooves b for resting spiral springs D therein. The slats or canepieces C may be made in the usual manner, of round or other shape, but preferably the elastic cane of the American bamboo may be used, on account of its cheapness and availability. The recesses a are of semicircnlar the unchanged position of the spiral springs in grooves b. A strong cord or strap, E, riveted or otherwise connected to the ends of pieces B, passes through each spring and over slats G, holding them securely in their proper places, forming an elastic and durable spring-bed.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The lateral cross-piece B having alter` nating recesses b and grooves a for slats C and springs c, substantially as described.
2. The continuous double-acting spring D, with alternating extensions d and spiral 'springs e, substantially as specified.
3. The combination of the subject-matter of the foregoing clauses,witl1 cord or strap E, slats C, and frame A, substantially as and for the purposes described.
STEPHEN STOUT.
