INVENTOI? A TTORNE Y UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANCIS X. LIST, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO NATIONAL CARD MOUNTING COMPANY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.,
A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
DISPLAY-FOLDER.
Application filed. March 5, 1921.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANCIS X. LIST, a citizen of the United States, and resident of the borough of Bronx, city and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Displayi olders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in display folders, such as consist of a plurality of flexibly connected sections, which are adapted to be arranged in an upright position and display an advertisement printed on one of their faces.
The general object of the invention is the provision of a connection constructed so as to give an appearance of continuity to the display surface of the folder made up of the display surfaces of the sections thereof when the folder is set upright in display position; and further constructed to permit of frequent folding and unfolding of the sections without impairing the connection and thereby rendering the folder useless.
To these ends, the invention resides in uniting oppositely disposed marginal portions of the'T'intermediate section of the folder with marginal portions of the side or wing sections superimposed thereon and providing the said side or wing sections with crease hinges.
Other objects will appear and be better understood from that embodiment of the invention of which the following is a specification reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part thereof, and in which:
Figure l is an elevation of the device in folded position;
Fig. 2 is a cross section on line 22 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1 showing the parts in display position;
Fig. i, is a side elevation of Fig. 3;
Fig. 5 is a detail cross section on the line 5-5 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 6 is a front elevation of a modified form of the device in display position.
Fig. 7 is a plan of Fig. 6 also showing by dotted lines the position of the parts of the folder.
The sections 5, 6 and 7 of the folder respectively constitute the intermediate and opposite side sections and each is formed of fibrous material, such as pasteboard. In the folded position of the folder the side sec- Specification of Letters Patent.

tions 6 and 7 are superimposed one upon the other and upon the intermediate section 5, to which the said side sections are fixedly secured in any suitable manner as by the staples 8 which pass through opposite marginal portions 9-l0 of the intermediate section and through adjacent marginal portions 1l12 of the sections 6 and, 7, and thereby hold the opposed faces of the said marginal portions in contact throughout. For the sake of neatness, the opposite side edges of the intermediate section adjacent to the staples 8 coincide with the adjacent side edges of the sections 67; and at least one of the latter is constructed narrower than the intermediate section in order to permit folding thereof upon one face of the intermediate section without interference from the secured marginal portion of the opposite section. At points between their free and secured sides and adjacent to the staples 8, the side sections are scored or crease-hinged as indicated by 13. By preference, the crease-hinges are disposed on the marginal portions 11l2 of the sections 6'?, so that when the said sections are turned outwardly to expose their front or display faces, and the front or display face of the intermediate section, the joint or space between the front faces and the front face of the intermediate section will be practically invisible to an observer positioned at a few feet distant from the display surface of the folder. This is of importance in that it is customary to print scenes or other matter for advertising purposes on the front face of the type of folder of this invention, and in instances where the printingon the display surface of each section is complementary to the printing on the display surfaces of the other sections a visible break or lack of continuity in the display surface invariably reduces the attractiveness of the same to no small extent.
When the device of this invention is not in use, the sections 67 are folded one upon the other and upon the intermediate section 5. In this position of the parts, the thickness of the folder corresponds to the combined thickness of the said sections, so that the folder occupies a minimum of space in shipment. In display position the sections 67 are turned on the crease-hinges 13 into angular relation to the section 5, and thereby co6perate with the latter and with one another to support the folder upright on a suitable stand. In the modified form shown in Figs. 6 and 7, the intermediate section 15 and side sections 16 and 17 are connected together so as to fold and unfold as described in connection with the form shown in Figs. 1 to 5 inclusive. In F 7 it will be observed that the marginal portions 18-18 and the side sections 16 and 17 are connected to opposite marginal portions 20-20 of the intermediate section 15. In this connection it will be observed that the staples 8 described in connection with Figs. 1 to 5 inclusive are omitted and eyelets 21 substituted therefor and the crease-hinges 22-22 are formed adjacent to the marginal portions 2020 of the intermediate section 15 instead of being incorporated with the side sections 6 and 7 as shown in Figs. 1. and 5. lVhat has been said in connection with the advantage had by the provision of the crease-hinges in the preferred form of the invention may be taken to apply to the construction of crease-hinge shown in the modified form. It is to be understood that the folder of this invention may comprise any desired number of sections, and these may be constructed in various sizes, shapes or contours, according to the character of advertisement to be displayed.
Although I have shown and described an ideal embodiment of the invention, it is to be understood that the same is susceptible of certain mechanical modifications the right to the use of which is hereby proposed within the scope claimed.
I claim:
1. A display easel of the character de scribed comprising a main panel centrally disposed and having marginal portions lying in the same plane therewith, and a pair of laterally disposed side panels adapted to overlap one another at their free edges and to fold against said main panel when closed, the outer portions of said lateral panels be ing provided with marginal portions lying substantially in the same planes with the respective lateral panels when the same are in the closed position but extending angularly thereto when said lateral panels are opened, said lateral panels and their respective marginal portions having crease-hinges formed therebetween 011 which the lateral panels may fold into and out of closed position with respect to the main central panel, said lateral panels when opened forming unbroken extension surfaces with the main central panel, and means passing through the marginal portions of the main panel and the marginal portions of said lateral panels for securing the same rigidly together.
2. A display stand comprising a main panel located intermediately and having marginal edges which lie transversely in the same plane therewith and which are in the same rigid piece and rigidly connected to the body of the main panel, lateral panels cooperating with said main panel and adapted to fold over upon the face thereof, said lateral panels having marginalportions in one piece therewith but flexibly secured thereto and extending at an angle to the planes of the lateral panels when the latter are in open display position, said lateral panels and their marginal portions having crease hinges formed therebetween on which the lateral panels may swing and which form unbroken surfaces with the central'panel, and metallic fastenings passing directly through the marginal portions of said lateral panels and the marginal portions of said central panel.
3. A display folder comprising panels foldably associated and adapted when extended to lie at substantially an obtuse angle and being crease-hinged alongan upright line, said panels having marginal portions adapted to overlap, the crease-hinge being formed at the overlapping marginal portions and forming an unbroken surface between the panels for receiving asingle composite display picture extending in part upon bothpanels and being completed by the two panels in association when in the opened position, and means going through the overlapped marginal portions of the panels. for securing the same together, said means being adjacent the crease-hinge for permanently holding the panels closely to} V gether thereat. r
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention, I have signed my name hereunder. i Y FRANCIS X. "LIST.
