VASSJER C. IIOLMAN, OF NIKON, TEXAS.
SPITTOON.
Application filed May 26,
Y 10 aZZ 107mm t may concern."
Be it known that I, Vassnia C. HOLMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Nix-zon, in the county of Gonzales and State oi Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Spittoon; and l do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to cuspidors and aims to provide a device of the nature aforesaid which is proof against spilling the contents in case the article is upset when moved b y the foot or when struck in a way to cause the same to overturn.
@ther objects and advantages will be apparent and suggest themselves as the nature of the invention is understood.
*While the drawings illustrate an embodiment of the invention it is to be understood that in adapting the same to meet different conditions and requirements, various changes in the form, proportion and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the nature of the invention.
Referring to the accompanying drawings forming a part of the specification,
Figure 1 is a vertical, central section 01"? a spittoon embodying the invention showing the same in upright position.
F ig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1 showing the device overturned or inverted.
Fig. 8 is an elevation of the cover and parts attached thereto disassociated from the top and body of the spittoon, parts being broken away.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and designated in the several views of the drawings by like reference characters.
The body of the spittoon is mounted upon 214 liaring base or stand 1 to give stability thereto and prevent the same from being readily overturned. The body comprises a cylindrical portion 2 having a tapering bottom portion 3 which Vis united to the stand or base 1. The lower portion oi. the bottom contains a receptacle 4L and sump 5, the latter being disposed within the base or stand 1 and surrounded by a jacket 6, the space between the sump and jacket 6 receiving a suitable weight to prevent ready overturning of the device. The 'cover 7 is detachable and of tapering or conical :torni Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented ct. 25, 1921.
i921. serial No. 472,754.
and is provided at its top with a threaded collar 8. A slightly tapering nipple 9 dcpends from the top of the cover 7 in line with the collar 8 and serves to prevent discharge or the contents of the cuspidor when the latter is overturned as indicated most clearly in F ig. 3. The collar 10 surrounds the nipple 9 and is spacedtherefrom and is attached at its upper end to the cover 7 llChe collar 10 is provided at its lower end with a conical Harige 11. A conical de- '.tlector 12 is suspended from the flange 11 by means of hangers 13. The several parts have a concentric relation to insure uniformity of structure and similarity of appearance. yThe top 14e4 ilares in the usual way and is provided with a threaded collar 15 to make screw thread engagement with the collar 8. It will thus be understood that the top 14 is detachable from the cover and the latter is hereinbefore stated is detachable from the body 2 whereby provision is had for conveniently cleaning the device which is essential in an article of this nature.
When the cuspidor is in upright position as indicated most clearly in Fig. 1 the contents remain in the receptacle 4:. In the event of the article being overturned as indicated in Fig. 2 the contents are prevented from spilling by the combined action o the detlector 12, flange 11 and collar 10. ln the upset position of the spittoon the contents are retained by the cover 7 and collar 10. Should any of the contents splash over the 'edge of the flange 11 during the overturning they will be prevented from escaping by coming in contact with the nipple 9 and will be deflected thereby into the same formed between it and the collar 10. When restoring the device to normal position the contents will flow from the collar into the receptacle 4 and lwill be directed in their return by means of the deiiector 12.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is 1. A spittoon comprising a body, a cover therefor having a centrally disposed opening in its top, a collar depending from the top of the cover and surrounding the opening therein and provided at its lower end with a conical flange and a conical detlector disposed within the body between the bottom thereof and the said conical flange at the lower end of the collar.
2. A spittoon comprising a body, a cover therefor having a centrally disposed opening in its top, a taperino nipple in line with the opening and depencA ing from thetop of the cover, a collar surrounding and spaced from the nipple and depending from the top of the cover and provided at its lower end with a conical flange and a conical delector intermediate the bottom of the body and the lower ends of the nipple and collar. 3. A spittoon comprising a body, a Cover therefor having a centrally disposed opening in its top, a nippleV depending` from the top of the cover and in line with the openings therein, a collar surrounding and spaced from the nipple and depending from the top of the cover and having a conical flange at its lower end and a conical deflector suspend-ed from the flange of the lower end of the collar and disposed opposite the base formed between the nipple and collar.
4. A Y spttoon comprising-.a body, a weighted conical base having the body mounted thereon, aconical cover detachably fitted to the body and centrally apertured vin its top and provided with a colla-1` and a VASSER C. HOLMAN.
