AM( FHum-umqawH/c cn. mossos/veis moms) UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.,
SAMUEL V. BECKWITH, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOB '.l'O HIMSELF AND T. B. CARPENTER, OF NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT.
`IMPROVEMENT IN CURRENCY AND POSTAGE-STAMP HOLDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No.'139.492, dated J une 3, 1873; application filed January 17, 1573.
.To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL V. BEoKwI'rH, of Brooklyn, in the county ot' Kings and State of New York, have invented a new Improvement in Combined Currency Aand Postage- Stamp Holder; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the let-ters of ret'- erence marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the saine, and which said drawings constitute part ot' this specitcation, and represent, i11- Figure 1, a sidel view; Fig. 2, a longitudinal central section; Fig.3, the stamp-holder drawn out; and in Fig. 4, a transverse section.
This invention rela-tes to a device for holding fractional currency, and also a convenient means for carrying postage-stamps; and the invention consist-s in a tube combined with a bar hinged at one end and lying longitudinally on the surface of the said cylinder, between which and the cylinder the currency is held by means of a spring bearing on the said bar, and having combined therewith a device for carrying postage-stamps within the cylinder.
A is the cylinder, which may be of any convenient size or length. yB is a bar or plate lying longitudinally upon the surface of the cylinder, made concave upon its under side to Vwhich is to close and hold the bar upon the cylinder.
To introduce the currency, raise the bar, as denoted in broken lines, Fig. 2, place the currency in position and drop the bar thereon, as seen in Fig. 4, then roll the currency upon the cylinder, which leaves it in convenient form for the pocket. The bearing of the bar upon the currency is only sufficient to hold it in position, and either one of the notes may be removed without interfering with the others, by simply opening the package turning the portion of notes one side of the note. desired to be removed over the bar, and the portion upon the other side in the opposite direction, and holding the cylinder between the fingers the desired note is left free, and may be drawn out without disturbing the others.
In the cylinder at the end opposite the hinge I lit a head, C, with a convenient knob or handle, D, and to this attach a pair of wire springs, E E, extending into the cylinder,.and their ends bent or spread so as to bea-r against the surface of the cylinder, as seen in Fig. 2, producing sulicient friction to retain their position in the cylinder. Around these springs the stamps are Wound; then the springs are set into the cylinder, as seen in Fig. 2, inclosing the stamps within the cylinder; and when required for use the stamp-holder and stamp are drawn out by means ot' the handle D. y
I claim as my invention- As an article of ln anufacture., the herein described currency and stamp-holder, consisting of the cylinder A, the bar B hinged thereto, she spring b, head C, and springs E.
SAML. V. BECKWITH.
Witnesses A. J. TIEBIrs, J. H. SHUMWAY.
