ROTARY ELECTRIC SWITCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 18, 1921.
Application filed August 6, 1917, Serial No. 184,782. Renewed March 2, 1921. Serial No. 449,272.
(GRANTED UNDER THE PROVISIONS OF THE ACT OF KARCE 3, 1921, 41 STAT. L., 1313.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Aaron ALBERT BUCK, a citizen of the Swiss Confederation, residing at Zurich, Canton Zurich, Switzerland, have invented new and useful Improvements in Rotary Electric Switches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a form of rotary electric switch for switching in and out two electric resistances particularly for use of regulating the heating effect on electric heating-cushions, heating-carpets, heating bandages and so forth, and it comprises a turnable ring or annular switch member fitted with two screwed diametrically positioned contacts which connect up the pincontacts of a central switch block with the leading-in and the return conductors.
The accom anyin drawings show the invention in a orm 0 construction serving as an example, in which Figure l is an axial section of the switch; Fig. 2, a cross-section taken on the line A-B of Fig. 1; Figs. 3, 4, 5 and 6 are diagrams showing various positions of the contacts.
The switch consists of the central switchblock f which is firmly lodged in two shells g which protect the conductors, and between which is turnably held a ring or annular switch member a. The member a carries two diametrically placed contacts 7) consisting each of two tubes, the one part 72. of which may be externally screw-threaded so as to.
be made fast in the ring a, while the other tube 2' loosely engages in the tube It so as to slide endwise. The inner tube 21 is closed at its inner end but 0 en at the opposite end. The tube It can be c osed externally by a cap after the introduction of a spring 0 which I tends to push the tube 5 forward against the sides of any two adjacent contact pins d fast in the block f. By way of an example I have shown eight contact pins d marked I, II to VIII on the drawing. One of the pins, for example, I, is connected with the positive pold of an electric source of supply while the negative pole of same is connected with the.
pin IV. Further, the pin I is connected with an electric resistance W and a resistance W is connected with the pin-contact VII. The two resistances are electrically connected with each other and from this connection of the two resistances there leads an electric connection to the pin-contact V. Moreover, the contact VII is connected with the contact VIII, and the contact IV is connected with the contact VI.
The action is as follows:
In turning the ring a on the block f, the springs c insure against unintentional shifting of the ring a. Fig. 3 shows the position of the ring a in which the contacts I) connect with each other the contacts VII and VIII on the one hand, and the contacts III and IV on the other hand. With this position no current passes through the resistances W and W so.that the heating device is switched off. Fig. 4 shows the contacts I) in position connecting the contact II with III and contact VI with VII, whereby the resistances W and W are connected in series. Consequently the positive current passes from contact I through the resistance W and then in series through the resistance W on to the contacts VII, VI and IV, and off ing effect is obtained. Fig. 5 shows the switch in position to ass the ositive current through I, W V, I andv V, into the return wire so insuring the single efi'ect of resistance W and a mean heating effect. Fig. 6, as in Fig. 2, shows the resistances W and W in parallel across the positive and negative wires and the current will pass over the contact I to the resistance W and over the contacts VIII and VII to the resistance W and from the two resistances it will pass through contacts V and IV to the negative wire back to battery. This position insures full heating effect.
The advantages of this switch-device consist in that the jamming of any of its parts is prevented; that the switch may be turned both ways without damage; and that the twisting of the leading-in and leading-01f wires is impossible.
Having described my invention, I claim:
A rotary electric switch for connecting up two electr1c resistances, which consists in the combination of a transversely divided cylindrical shell, a concentric block fixed in said shell, a plurality of cylindrical longitudinally disposed pm contacts carried in a circular line in said block, an annular disk turnably engaged between and projecting concentrically from the periphery of said shell, and diametral spring-tube contacts secured in the annular disk for automatic engagement and disengagement between any two of said cylindrical in contacts.
ABTON RLBERT BUCK.
