Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN' KROTH, OF FORKS, NEW YORK.
POWER-WHEEL.
Application l'ed March 18, 1921.
T 0 all 'Lo/wm t may concern.'
Be it known that I, JOHN KRoTH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Forks, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Power-VV heels, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to power wheels, and transmission means therefor.
It has been found in practice that by utilizing a large and heavy wheel to receive power from the motor or engine and then transmit this power through Suitable transmission devices, that more power can be obtained than by drawing the power directly from the shaft operated by the motor or engine. It is therefore a prime object of this invention to provide a suitable power wheel of this type together with desirable mounting means and transmission devices therefor.
Another-object is to provide a device of this nature which shall be simple of construction, and highly efficient for the purpose for which it is devised.
With these and other objects in view which will be more apparent as the specification proceeds, the invention resides in certain novel features of construction and combination and arrangement of parts, the essential features of which are hereinafter fully described, are particularly pointed out in the appended claim, and are illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of my device. i
Fig. 2 is a top plan view ofthe same.
Like characters of reference refer to like parts in both views.
Referring to the drawing in detail, 10 represents the bottom and 11 the side wall of a cylindrical well preferably constructed of concrete or other suitable material. A motor or engine conventionally shown at 12 may be secured to the side l1 of the well and is adapted to drive a shaft 13 carrying a wheel 14 which rests upon a circular rail 15 secured to the upper face of what I shall term the power wheel 16. This power wheel is supported in a horizontal position by a lower rail 17 riding upon a plurality of bearing rollers 18 mounted so as to project from the sides of the wall l1.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 18, 1921.
Serial No. 453,213.
An upright shaft 19 passes through the axis of rotation of the power wheel 16, and about this shaft, wheel 16 rotates. The shaft 19 is mounted with its lower end secured in the bottom 10 of the well, and has its upper end secured in a bridge 2O fast to the top of the side wall 11 and passing across said well.
A gear wheel 21 is secured to the lower face of the power wheel 16 so as to rotate therewith; and a gear 22 mounted on a stub shaft 23 meshes with gear 21 and is itself secured to a crown-gear 23 meshing a crowngear 24 secured to for rotating a horizontal shaft 25 from which the power may be taken off in any desirable manner, as for instance by pulley 26.
The rails 15 and 17 have been shown as frictionally engaged with wheel 14; and rollers 18 respectively, but the various members may be made with suitably co-acting gear teeth if desired.
While I have described what I deem to be the most desirable embodiment of my invention, it is obvious that many of the details may be varied without in any way departing from the spirit of my invention, and I therefore do not limit myself to the exact details of construction herein set forth nor to anything less than the whole of my invention limited only by the appended claim.
lVhat is claimed as new is In a device of the class described, the combination of a concrete well, a source of power secured thereto and comprising a drive wheel, a plurality of idler rollers supported by said well, a horizontally disposed power wheel, a rail secured to the upper surface of said wheel and engaged by said drive wheel, a rail secured to the lower surface of said wheel and riding on said rollers, a shaft upon which said power wheel is pivotally mounted, said shaft being supported at its lower end by said well, a bridge for supporting the upper end of said shaft, a gear secured to said power wheel, and gearing operable by said gear for operating any desired mechamsm.
In testimony whereof I have axed my signature.
JOI-IN KROTH.
