Description

C. D. JOHNSON.
PITMAN WHEEL. APPLICATION FILED APB. 17, 191s.

onirica.
CLIFFORD D. 50HNSON, OF BANGOR, WISCONSIN.
PITMAN-WHEEIJ.
Speoicationof Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 24, 1914.
Application led April 17, 1913. Serial No. 761,800.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CLIFFORD D. JorinsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bangor, in the county of La Crosse, State of Viscon'sin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements' in Pitman- VVheels; and` I do hereby declare the f ollowing to be a full, clear, and exact descrlption of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which 1t appertains to make and use the same. This invention relates to certain nove and useful improvements in a pitman wheel 'wheel which will embody in its construction the vdesired features of simplicity, durability and eiiiciency. 4
IVith the above recited objects and others of a similar nature in view, my invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts set forth in and falling within the scope of the appended claim.`
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a .top plan view of a pitman wheel embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a view in elevation of one side thereof. Fig. 3 is a similar view of theother side. Fig. 4 is la vertical cross sectional view on the line 4 4 of Fig. 3 with the gears shown in elevation.
Referring now to the accompanying drawings in detail the letter A indicates a portion of the frame of a mowing` machine, andthe numeral 1 indicates a bearing sleeve carried thereby. The end of this sleeve is flared as at 2 and has bolted thereto so as to be rigidly connected therewith, the gear wheel 3. The drive shaft 4-extends through the sleeve 1 and through the gear carried at the end thereof, and the terminal 5 of this shaft has v`keyed thereto the wheel 6 which .is recessed as at 7 for the reception of the gear wheel 3 and the pinion 8. The numeral 9 designates a cover for the gears which forms one side of the wheel and is bolted to the main body of the wheel by the bolts 10 Thepinion 8 is mounted upon the stud 11, one end of which is journaled in a bearing 12 in the side or cover 9, while the opposite end 'of which isl journaled as at 13 in the wheel body 6, this end of the stud shaft 11 projecting beyond the wall of the wheel and has fast therewith a disk V14 which turns in the recess 15 in the wheel 6 and is provided with a stud 16 to which the pitman P is connected at 17.
From the above description of the mechanical construction of my device, it will be seen that as the main or drive, shaft 4 rotates, the wheel 6 will turn therewith and impart the usual long stroke to the pitman. At the same time that the wheel 6 turns it carries around with it the pinion 8 which meshes with the gear Wheel 3 rigid with the end 2 of the sleeve 1, so that the pinion will be turned, or caused to take a number of 'revolutions in its travel around the gear 3,
and a corresponding number of revolutions will be imparted to the disk 14, and the pitman will be given a series of short rapid strokes while undergoing its long stroke. For instance, if the disk 14 revolves four times duringv one revolution of the wheel 6,
the pitman will receive four short rapid' strokes while making the long stroke.
It will benoted that I have provided an exceedingly simple, yet eiiicient device for driving the pitman of mowing machines which are designed especially for cutting fine,`thick grass, and furthermore, the in-v vention may be applied to any ordinary,
well known type of machine without radical changes in construction of the latter.
What I claim is:
' The combination with a shaft and pitman; of a disk fixed on said shaft and rotatable therewith, agear wherein said shaft rotates, said gear bein Xedly mounted, a
- pinion journaled in said disk and meshing with said gear, and a crank disk carried by the first disk on a journal of said pinion and connected to said pitman. Y
In testimony whereof, I afliX my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
. CLIFFORD D. JOHNSON. Witnesses:
HAROLD T..HANs0N, NORMANy I-I. DAHL.
