PUMP.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 20,880, dated July 13, 1858i.
To all whom "it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE HIBSCH, of Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rotary Pumps; and I hereby declare the following to be a full and eXact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a vertical section through the cylinder. Fig. 2 is a plan of one of the screw wheels, and Fig. 3 a View of the under side of the pump.
The nature of my invention relates to the construction of rotary pumps for wrecking, draining and other similar uses; for this purpose I place at the lower end of a vertical cylinder two screw wheels, similar to those used for screw propellers, one of a right-f and the other of a left hand thread and by means of gearing as herein described revolve them in reverse directions, thereby causing a change of direction in the currents of the water; the action of the upper wheel, B, gives an increased impetus to these currents which forces t-he water to the top of the cylinders where it is discharged from the spout. By this arrangement no valves are required, and the liability to derangement is greatly lessened.
The following description will enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invent-ion.
The cylinder, A, is bored at its lower eX- tremity to receive the two screw wheels; a grating, L, is placed at its bottom to prevent chips or other obstruct-ions from getting into the pump; the center of this grating is ,bored to serve as a step for the vert-ical shaft, D; the wheels, B, B, are provided with spiral flanges or blades, Z), b', 5, similar to propeller wheels, these blades are surrounded at their outer extremities by a band,
O, which serves to strengthen them, and to prevent any obstruction from getting between the ends of the blades and the cylinder whereby they might be broken; the lower one of these wheels is attached to the shaft, D, the upper one being fastened to the hollow-shaft or sleeve, E, through which the shaft, D, runs; the bevel pinions, G, G, are fastened to the upper ends of the shafts, D, E, these pinions being geared into the bevel wheel, F, diametrically opposite to each other revolve in opposite directions; the driving crank, H, is fastened to the shaft, K, tin the large pumps a pulley may be substituted for the crank.) The standard, I, supports theshaft, K, and also serves as a steadiment for the upper end of the shaft D. The ears or lugs J, J, J, J, are formed on the outside of the cylinder for the purpose of attaching bolts thereto to secure the pump in position.
In using my pump the screw .wheels B, B, require to be submerged and driven at a high rate of speed; the speed being proportioned to the quantity, and the height to which the water is to be raised.
Among the advantages I claim for my pump as compared with other pumps for like purposes, is simplicity of construction, its non-liability to derangement, and the small amount of power required to operate it.
