Description
penstockl I NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
REUBEN RICH, OF ALBION, NEV YORK.
i IMPROVEMENT |N WATER-WHEELS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 24,054, dated May 1'7, 1859.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, REUBEN RICH, of Albion, in the county of Oswego and State of New York, have in vented a new and Improved Mode of Constructing the Pressure Center- Vent Wheel-Plate; and I do hereby declare that the following is a-full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention relates to improvements in the cen ter-vent Wheel-plate and penstock.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, Iwill proceed to describe its constructionl and operation.
Figure l is a plan of the wheel-plate and Fig. 2 is an elevation of the same through the red line on Fig. 1.
The letters of reference on the respective figures referring to the same parts, A is the penstock; B, the scroll-plate; C, the waterwheel; D, the shaft of the wheel.
E are support-bars for the shaft and wheel and secured to the wheel-box by the bolts K.
F are the sides or plan kin g of the penstock G, the lower gate; G2, the upper gate; II, the bolts which hold the pensto'ck together.
I are the sill-pieces,andJ are posts, through which the bolts H pass to clamp the dadoed joints L closely together to prevent leakage.
The scroll-plates B, as also the side which form the spout for conducting the water to the wheel, extend into the penstock sufficient distance to admit the gates being placed and worked within the penstock and secured to it by bolts. By this method of forming the penstock and spoilt the whole is readily put up and easily taken down and apart for repairs.
Having thus fully described my improved water-wheel and penstock, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
Constructing the penstock A, dadoed joints L, and bolts I, in combination with gates G and G2 and center scroll-plate B and wheel C,
when constructed and operated in the manner and for the purposes hereinbefore specified.
REUBEN RICH. Witnesses:
J. I-I. MERRILL, THOMAS C. DoEIN.
