PUMP JACK,
Application filed January 12, 1926.
This invention aims to provide a novel form of pump jack, adapted to be placed in the pit in the ground, or elsewhere, to prevent freezing, the article being compact, and novel means being provided for transmitting motion from driving to driven part-s.
It is within the province of the disclosure to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices of that type to which the invention appertains.
lVith the above and other objects in View which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invent-ion.
In the drawings Figure 1 shows in elevation, a device constructed in accordance with the invention, parts being broken away;

Figure 3 is a section on the line 83 of Figure 2.
The support for the working parts of the device is in the form of a casing 1 including a body 2 which tapers toward one of its ends, the body being supplied at its other end with a depending pedestal 3 provided with a foot plate 4 adapted to be connected by securing elements 5 to the bottom of a pit in the ground, such a location preventing freezing, although the structure may of course be used at any place desired. The inlet for the liquid is in the form of a pipe 6 mounted in the foot plate 4 and comn'iunicating with the pedestal 3. A pump 7 is interposed in the inlet pipe 6. The outlet for the liquid is in the form of a pipe 8 connected to the casing 1 at the wider end thereof and extended outwardlyand upwardly, to discharge into a tank 9 or other receptacle. The casing 1 and specifically the body 2, is supplied near to its narrower end with bearings 10 wherein a shaft 11 is mounted to rock, an arm 12 being secured at 14: to the shaft 11, the arm being mounted Serial No. 80,823.
within the casing 1 for swinging movement. A rod 15 is pivoted at 16 to the arm 12 and constitutes means housed within the casing and within the inlet 6 for connecting the arm 12 to the pump 7 to operate the pump,
A means is provided for imparting swinging movement to the arm 12 from a point external to the casing 1, said means comprising an arm 17 secured to the outer end of the shaft 11 and pivoted at 18 to an upwardly extended pitman 19 which is pivoted eccentrically at 20 to a gear wheel 21 mounted on one end to a shaft 22 carried by a bearing 23 on the upper edge of the body 2 of the casing 1, the gear wheel 21 meshing with a pinion 24 on one end of a shaft 25 mounted to rotate in a bearing 26 carried by the end of the body 2. The opposite end of the shaft 25 is supplied with any suitable means whereby rotation is imparted to the shaft, for instance, a pulley 27 cooperating with a belt 28, although it is to be understood that any suitable means may be supplied for imparting rotation to the shaft 25.
When the shaft 25 is rotated, the pinion 24 rotates the gear wheel 21, and the pitman 19, together with the arm 17, rocks the shaft 11, the arm 12 being actuated, and the rod 15 operating the pump 7, liquid being raised into the casing 1, through the inlet 6, and passing, by way of the pipe 8, to the place of use, indicated diagrammatically at 9.
As clearly shown in the drawings, the easing 1 may be made up of laterally separable parts held together by marginal securing elements 29, such as bolts, a gasket 30 being in terposed between the constituent parts of the casing, if desired.
lVhat is claimed is Ina mechanical movement, for use in a pump, a. casing having a lower opening and an upper opening, a first shaft mounted to rock in the casing, a second shaft mounted to rotate on the casing, a pinion on the second shaft and located outside of the casing, a gear wheel located outside of the casing and rotatable on the casing, the gear wheel meshing with the pinion, a first arm located inside of the casing and connected to the first shaft to swing between the openings, in the same plane with the lower opening, when the first shaft is rocked, a second arm located outside of the casing and connected to the first shaft to swing when the first shaft is rocked, a pitman located outside of the casing and pivoted to the gear wheel and to the second arm, means for rotating the second shaft, and
means for operating driven machinery, the last specified means being connected to the first arm, and being extended out of the ca 10 ing through the lower opening.
