PORTABLE BED-SPRING.

Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, SABIN MIKIEL, a citizen of Poland, residing at Elizabethport, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portable Bed-Springs, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to beds, having more particular reference to the arrangement of the frame and spring.

The invention has for an object to provide a novel and simple arrangement for holding the spring in position upon the frame in a manner to permit of ready removal of the spring, and of the latter being rolled up to compact form, for transportation or other purposes. 1

For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompany drawings, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.

Figure 1 of the drawings is a perspective View of a bed frame having the invention embodied therein.

Fig. 2 is a longitundinal sectional view thereof, showing the spring partly rolled up, this View being taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.

Fig. 3 is a plan View.

Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail horizontal section, showing one corner of the bed frame, this view being taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2, but with the side edge portion of the spring broken away.

Fig. 5 is a longitundinal section on the line 5-5 of Fig. 4:.

Figs. 6, 7, 8 and 9 are detail and elevations showing the means for attaching the spring to the frame elements of the bed.

As here shown the frame of the bed comprises a pair of head posts 10 and foot posts 11, the posts of each pair being rigidly united by the transverse angle beams 12 and 13 respectively, while side beams 14 extend between the foot and head posts, and are detachably secured thereto in any wellknown manner. Suitable headboards 15 and footboards 16 may be carried by the respective pairs of posts.

To brace the frame laterally, and at the same time serve as a means of attachment for the bed spring, I provide at opposite ends of the bed frame pairs of angular brackets 18 and 19 respectively which fit over the angle beams 12 and 13 and are provided each with a hook such as 20 adapted to engage under the bottom of the angle beam. These brackets are located a short distance inwardly from the posts 10, 11 and are formed with diagonal extensions 18', 19 which diverge outwardly toward the side beams 14, these extensions having vertical pins 21 on their outer ends which engage in eye members 22 fixed to the inner faces of the side beams 14:.

The bed spring proper is shown at 25 and may be formed of woven wire, or constructed in any suitable manner. This spring is secured at opposite ends to a pair of angle lrons 26, 26, being here shown as caught between the angle irons and clamping strips 27 such as riveted to the latter.

The angle irons 26, 26' are detachably secured to the brackets 18 and 19, being arranged at one end of the spring more particularly for ready removal. As here shown screws 28 and 29 respectively are threaded through suitable apertures in the angle irons, these screws being swiveled in upstanding ears 30 and 31 of brackets 18 and 19. At one end of the bed (as here shown the foot) the ears 31 each have a vertical slot 32 cut downwardly from the top thereof. Over this ear is fitted a cap 33 which is slotted from the bottom upwardly as at 34, the'upper end of the slot 3 1 and the lower end of the slot 32 jointly forming an aperture to receive the screw 28 freely. The screw 29 may have an enlarged head 29 of suitable square or other polygonal shape to receive a wrench or spanner. Each cap 33 maybe held in place by means of a pair of studs 35 fixed in the ends of arms 36 pivoted between their ends as at 37 to the cap, the studs projecting through suitable apertures in the walls of the cap and into sockets in the edges of the ear 30. These arms 36 have finger grip extensions 38 pressed outwardly from one another by a coiled spring 39 whereby the studs 35 are held in looking position.

At the other end of the bed the ear 30 on each angle bracket 18 may simply have an aperture to receive'the screws 28, which latter have square or other polygonal heads 28 similar to the heads 29 on the screws 29.

Assuming the bed frame to be assembled, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3 of the drawings. To take it apart the screws 29 are loosened sufficiently to take the tension of the spring and the caps 33 are lifted off the ears 31, the studs 35 being first disengaged by pressing inward on the arm extensions 38. The angle iron 26 may then be lifted until the screws 29 pass out of the slots 32, freeing the spring from the bed frame, and permitting it to be rolled up against the frame at the opposite end of the bed. The head and foot frames may then be disengaged from the side beams 14: by swinging the angle brackets 18, 19 upward until the pins 21 disengage from the eye members 22 as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2. In setting the bed frame up, the above operation is reversed.

As will be apparent transportation of the bed from one place to another is facilitated, the component parts thereof being capable of more compact packing than is possible Where the spring is permanently fixed on a rigid frame.

Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent of the United States is as follows:

1. In a bed, a frame, a spring, rigid transverse members to which said spring is at tached at opposite ends, means detachably securing one of said members to the bed frame, said last member being adapted to be rolled up with the spring when said securing means is released, said securing means including car elements presenting slots,

the said angle beams and presenting diagonal extensions detachably engaging said side beams.

3. In a bed, a frame comprising head and foot elements including transverse angle beams, side beams uniting said head and foot element, bracing brackets hooked upon the said angle beams and presenting diagonal extensions detachably engaging said side beams, a spring, and means for detachably securing said spring to said angle brackets.
