UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
COFFEE-CAN AND ATTACHMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 18, 1921.
Application filed December 9, 1920. Serial No. 429,487.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, lVILLIAM S. MILLER, a citizen of the United States, residentof San Diego, county of San Diego, and State of California, have invented a new and use Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views of the accom-v panying drawing in which Figure 1 is an elevation of a can equipped with the invention;
Fig. 2 is a side view of same with a part broken away to show the mounting of the device;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged section taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 illustrates the outside cylinder and Fig. 5 the inside cylinder.
The numeral (1) indicates a can of suitable size which has an air tight cover (2). The bottom (3) of the can is spaced from the end to form an open chamber (4) in which the delivering and measuring device is mounted. This device consists of a cyl inder or tube (5) with an upper opening (6.) and a lower opening (7 The upper opening (6) communicates with an opening (8) in theibottom (3) of the can. the two openings being joined by an extension (9) and the end of the cylinder being in alinement with; a hole in the side of the can (1).- R0- tata-bly mounted inside the cylinder (5) is the cylinder (11) which has an opening (12) adapted to register with either of the openings (6) or (7) in cylinder (5). The cylinder (11) has ends (13) and (14) spaced apart to form a chamber (15).- A thumb piece (16) is attached to; the end (13) for rotat= ing the cylinder (11), the movement of which is determined by the position of a stop pin. (17 engaging a slot (18) in the cylinder (5), and is so arranged that the pin engages one end of the slot when the opening (12) registers with the opening (6) and the other end of the slot when the opening (12) registers with the opening (7).
In operation, when the thumb piece (16) is turned the cylinder (11) is rotated until the opening (12) registers with the opening (6), allowing the contents of the can to fill the chamber (15) in cylinder (11). Then the cylinder (11) is turned back until the wall of the cylinder closes the opening (6) and the opening (12) registers with opening (7 in the cylinder (5) thereby allowing the contents of chamber (15) to run out.
The device is so designed that the opening (6) leading to the interior of the can, is closed before the opening (7) is opened and thus the can is kept air tight.
My claims are as follows but I am aware that various modifications may be made in the construction as shown in the drawings and the above described form, within the scope of my invention.
I claim:
A coffee can comprising in combination a receptacle, an air tight removable cover for said receptacle, a raised horizontal bottom in said receptacle, an opening in said bottom having a downwardly depending housing, a horizontal cylinder fixed to said housing, an upper and a lower opening in the walls of said cylinder, the upper, opening thereof being heldin alinement with the opening in the bottom of said receptacle by said housing, a rotatable cylinder fitting inside of said fixed cylinder, closed ends in said rotatable cylinder, an opening in the wall of said rotatable cylinder adapted to register with the upper or lower opening in said horizontal cylinder, an opening in the side of said receptacle and athufnb piece on said rotatable cylinder adjacent said opening substantially as and for the purpose described.
WILLIAM scHUYLER MILLER.
