IMPROVEMENT IN DRAWING-BOARDS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 139,411, dated May 27, 1873; application vfiled February 17, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERMAN H. MEYER, of Denver, in the county of Arapahoe and Territory of Colorado, have invented an Improved Drawing-Board, of which the following is a specification This invention consists in a novel construction ofthe board, including hinged stretchingpieces, whereby paper may not only be secured without the use of tacks, paste, or glue, but may also be stretched throughout its whole length or at different points, and be made to present a smooth surface without puckering.
In the accompanying drawing, Fig. 1 is a top view of a board made according to my invention, and Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
.The board proper, A, is erected on two taper side-strips, B B, and is of the usual rectangular shape. Along its bottom edge there extends a clamping-strip, C, for holding the paper. Itis secured in place and operated by screws D D. E is a stretching-piece, which is hinged to the fore-ends of the side-strips B B. In its upper portion are a series of thumbscrews, G G, whose ends abut against metal buttons or plates s s, on a strip of wood, H, arranged under the edge of the board. The piece E is furnished at the upper edge with a clamping-strip, I, operated by screws K K, in the same manner as the strip U, before described. As this board is only suitable for paper of one length, I provide on the under side of the side strips another board, J, for shorter paper. Like the board A, it is provided with a clamping-strip, Cf, for securing the bottom edge of the paper, and with a stretching-piece, E', hinged to the board A, for straining or stretchingthe paper.
Whichever board is to be used is turned uppermost, and the top edge of the paper is secured between the stretching-piece E or E', and clampingstrip I or I, by means of the screws K or K. is drawn tight over the board by the hand and fastened between the clamping-strip C or O and the bottom edge of the board. When the paper is thus secured the thumb-screws G or G are screwed up to abut against the buttons `s or s in the strip H or H', and force the stretch-piece out and thereby stretch the paper. One or more of the screws just mentioned may be screwed up to stretch out a 1. The combination of the board furnished with a clamping-piece, C, the swinging stretchpiece E, likewise furnished with a clampingstrip and the thumb-screws GwG, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The side strips B B, in combination with the boards A and J, the clamping-pieces and stretch-pieces, essentially as and for the purpose set forth.
