Be it known that I, Josnrrr SoHEoHTnR, a citizen of Poland, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lock Mechanisms; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it apbertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawin s, and to characters of reference marked t ereon, which form a part of this specification.
The present invention relates, generally, to improvements in lock mechanism; andv the invention has reference to a strong and effective lock mechanism for either hinged or sliding doors, the same possessing a novel construction of dead bolt of the rotary type, with novel means for actuating the same.
The invention has for its principal object to provide a novel rotary dead bolt mechanism subject to the control of either a hand manipulated knob means or a key operated means, or both; and a further ob ject of the invention is to provide in combination with said rotary dead bolt and its actuating means an additional means auto matically cooperating with said rotary dead bolt to hold the latter against movement when in either its locking. or releasing position.
Other objects of the inventiomnot atthis time more particularly enumerated, will be clearly understood from the following detailed description of the same.
With the various objects of the invention in view, the same consists, primarily, in the novel construction of lock mechanism hereinafter set forth; and, the invention consists, furthermore, in the novel arrangements and combinations of the several devices and parts, as well as in the details of the construction of the same all of which will be more fully described inthe following specification, and then finally sin-- bodied in the claims appended thereto.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which z Figure 1 is a front elevation of the novel lock mechanism as applied to a door and door frame; Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same; and Fig. 3 is a top edge elevation of the same.

Similar characters of reference are employed in all of the hereinabove described views, to indicate corresponding parts.
Referring now to said drawings, the ref erence character 1 indicates a casing for inclosing the lock mechanism, the same having in one end wall suitably disposed openings 2 and 3 to permit the passage of the dead bolt when the latter is operated. The reference character 4 indicates a rotary dead bolt of substantially semi-annular shape, and provided adjacent to one end with an inwardly projecting radial arm 5, the free inner end of which is pivotally mounted on a fulcrum stud (3 fixed within the casing 1 intermediate the openings 2 and 3.
The reference character 7 indicates a tailpiece, the forward end of which is pivotally connected with a coupling stud 8 provided on said radial arm 5 of said rotary bolt. Said tail-piece 7 is provided adjacent to its rearward end with a circular opening 9, extending forwardly from which is a guideslot 10. Fixed within said casing so as to extend transversely therethrough in a location rearwardly spaced from and alined with the fulcrum point of'said rotary bolt 4 is a guide-post 11 which projects through said guide-slot 10 of said tail-piece so as to control and guide the operativemovements of said tail-piece when the latter is actuated. In order to support said tail-piece, when actuated, against lateral displacement relative to the other members of the lock mechanism, the rear extremity of said tailpiece is provided with oppositely and laterwith a suitably disposed opening 14; which provides a bearing for the shank 15 of a hand-knob 16 projecting from the outer side of said casing 1. Fixed on the inner end of said shank 15 is a cam-plate 17 having a circular periphery which is cut-away at one point to provide a seat 18 for normally engaging a detent tumbler to be subsequently described. The normal initial position of said cam-plate 17 is maintained by means of a spring-detent 19 having at the end of its free arm'a nosing portion 20 which is normally engaged in a notch 21 provided in the periphery of said cam-plate 17. Fixed on said cam-plate so as to project in wardly from the surface thereof, and so that its free end also projects radially be yond the periphery of said cam-plate,-is an actuator-lug 22, which is arranged so that its free end cooperates with said flange 13 of the tail-piece 7. Said cam-plate with the actuator-lug 22 is so disposed relative to the normal position ofsaid tail fraine opening 9 and flange 13, when controlling or determining the projected or retracted position of the rotary bolt 41, as to be rearwardly eccentrically ofilset therefrom, so that rotation of the actuator-lug by turning the cam-plate will cause the same to operatively engage and travel against the flange or abutment 13 to thereby impart to the tailpiece the movements necessary to cause desired operation of said rotary bolt.
In order to permit operation of the tailpiece and rotary bolt from the outer side of the door by means of a key controlled mechanism, the inner wall of said casing 1 is pro vided with an opening 23 which provides a bearing for theh'ub 24: of a second rotary cam-plate 25 having an actuator-lug 26 adapted to cooperate with said flange 13 of the tailpiece 7. Saidhub 24: is provided with a central slot 27' adapted to receive the coupling tongue 28 of a suitable key actuated mechanism 29 connected with the outer side of the door with which said lock mechanism is arranged. Said cam-plate 25 and its actuator lug 26 are adapted to be rotated by the key operated mechanism 29 to cause the operation of the tail-piece 7 and rotary bolt 1 and also the detent tumbler to be subsequently described. Pivotally-mounted upon a suitably disposed fulcrum post 30 fixed within the casing 1 is adetent tumbler comprising a pair of laterally spaced side plates 31 secured together by the intermediate transverse connecting piece 31. The free ends of said side plates 31 project forwardly toward the rotary bolt so as to straddle the latter and are connected together by a transverse detent bar 32, which normally engages one or the other of the transverse detent notches 33 and 34 which are formed in the outer circumference of said rotary bolt 4, one detent notch, to wit 83, being located adjacent to one end of said rotary bolt, and the other detent notch, to wit 34, being located adjacent to the opposite end of said rotary bolt. he free end of said detent tumbler with its detent bar 32 is normally swung toward said rotary bolt by means of a spring member 35 which is operatively associated with said detent tumbler. Eachside plate 31 or" said detent tumbler is provided with a projection 36, the said projection 36 of one side plate 31'being normally disposed opposite the seat 18 of the cam-plate 17, while the projection 35 of the opposite side plate is normally disposed opposite the seat of the other cam-plate 25.

In Figs. 1 to 4: inclusive the lock mechanism is illustrated with the rotary bolt turned out of or projected from the casing 1 to its locking position. WVhen the rotary bolt 4; is in such locking position, the detent bar 32 of the detent tumbler is engaged with the detent notch 33 adjacent to the free end of the said bolt 4:, thus securely holding said bolt against manipulation or movement under the influence of any force which may be applied to the exteriorly exposed portions of said bolt.
The operation of the lock mechanism leased or unlocked position will noW be 1%- scribed. Thehand knob 16 is turned to impart a rotary movement to the cam-plate 17. As the cam-plate 17 turns the seat portion 18 immediately moves away from the projection 36 of the adjacent side plate 31 of said detent tumbler thereby causing the circular periphery of the said cam-plate '17 to move into contact with said projection 36, whereby said detent-tumbler is swung on its pivot or fulcrum, and against the tension of the spring member 35, to swing the free end of said detent-tumbler in a direction effecting the removal of said detent-bar 32 out of the notch 33 of the bolt 4. By the time the above-described release of the detent-tumbler relative to the bolt 4 is effected, the actuator-lug 22 has been carried around rearwardly into engagement with the flange or abutment 13 of the tail-piece 7 thereby imparting to-the latter a rearward movement or pull. The said rearward movement or pull of said tail-piece is transmitted to the radial arm 5 of the bolt 4 causing an inward swinging movement of the same which imparts a rotary movement to the bolt 4, wherey the free end of the latter is withdrawn outwardly through't'he opening 2 in the casing end, all as shown by the fulllines in Fig. 5 of the drawings. Continued rotation of the cam-plate carries the actuator-lug 22 past the center of its swing. and starts the same around in a forward direction toward its normal initial position or starting point. This movement of the actuator lug tends to pull the tail-piece 7 up to the limit of its rearward movement, and thereupon swings the same laterally upon the guide-post 1.1 as a fulcrum, so that the radial arm 5 is swung past the center of its rearwardly swung movement, whereupon the actuator-lug in swinging forward tends to push forwardly the tail-piece 7 consequently continuing the rotary movement of the bolt 4, as indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 5 of the drawings. As the actuator-lug 22 approaches its normal initial position in completing its revolution it pushes the tail-piece forwardly until the radial arm 5 is swung to stopped position against the end of the casing 1, the attainment of which position completes the rotary movement of the bolt 4, so that its free end is withdrawn into the casing flush with the opening 3 at the end of the latter. As the cam-plate 17 and actuator-lug 22 thus com- I plete their revolution the seat portion 18 of the former is again carried opposite the projection 36 of the adjacent side plate 31 of the detent-tumbler thus permitting the latter to swing back to normal operative position as moved by the spring 35, and so that the detent-bar 32 is engaged in the detent-notch 34' at the opposite end of said bolt 4, thus holding the bolt in released or retracted position, all as illustrated in Fig. 6 of the drawings.
" The rotary movement thus imparted to the semi-annular bolt 4 tends to rotate the same out of the eye-portion 44 of the staple 43, so that the door is released or free to be opened.
It will be understood that the above de scribed operations'may also be effected by operating the key-controlled means 29 to r0- tate the cam-plate 25 and its actuator lug 26, whereby the same operations of the detenttumbler and tail-piece 7 will be accomplished.
It will also be understood, that by reversing the rotation'of either of the cam-plates 17 or 25 with their respective actuator-lugs 22 or 26, inthe opposite direction, a reversal of the operations above described may be effected resulting in the projection of the rotary bolt 4 to its locked position.
It will be clear that the above described lock mechanism provides a very simple arrangement of rotary bolt and actuating mechanism therefor, and one which is very strong, durable and proof against actuation by the wrongful application of force to the exposed portions of the bolt when in proj ec-ted locked position.
I am aware that some changes may be made in the several arrangements and combinations of the various devices and parts as well as in the details of the construction of the same, without departing from the scope of my invention as above described, and as defined in the appended claims. Hence, I do not limit my invention to the exact arrangements and combinations of aarts set forth in said specification nor do I confine myself to the exact details of the construction of said parts as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.

A lock-mechanism comprising a semiannular rotary bolt having an inwardly extending radial arm at one end for pivotally mounting the same, a tail-piece pivotally connected with said radial arm, means for guiding the -movements of said tail-piece, means for producing a combined reciprocatory and oscillatory movement of said tailpiece to actuate the rotary movements of said bolt, sald bolt having detent notches at its outer circumference adjacent to each end, a pivoted detent-tumbler having a transverse detent-bar receivable in one or the other ofsaid notches, and means for releasing said detent-tumbler prior to the actuation of said tail-piece.
2. A lock-mechanism comprising a casing having at one end a pair of openings, a semiannular rotary bolt having an inwardly extending radial arm at one end, a pivot stud upon which the free end of said radial arm is journaled, said rotary bolt being positioned to move through said casing openings when rotated, a tail-piece within said casing pivotally connected with said radial arm, means for producing a combined reciprocatory and oscillatory movement of said tail-piece to actuate the rotary movements of said bolt, and an external staple plate having a staple portion through which said rotary bolt may be projected.
3. A lock-mechanism comprising a casing having at one end a pair of openings, semi annular rotary bolt having an inwardly extending radial arm at one end, a pivot stud upon which the free end of said radial arm is journaled, said rotary bolt being positioned to move through said casing openings when rotated, a tail-piece within said casing pivotally connected with said radial arm, means for producing a combined re- .ciprocatory and oscillatory movement of said tail-piece to actuate the rotary movements of said bolt, said bolt having detent notches at its outer circumference adjacent to each end, a pivoted detent-tumbler having a transverse detent-bar receivable in one or the other of said notches, means for releasing said detent-tumbler prior to the actuation of said tail-piece, and an external staple plate having a staple portion through which said rotary bolt may be projected.

A lock-mechanism comprising a casing having at one end a pair of openings, a semiannular rotary bolt movable through said openings, said bolt having an inwardly extending radial arm at one end, a pivot stud upon which the free end of said radial arm is journaled, a tail-piece pivotally connected with said radial arm, said tail-piece having a lateral annular flange bounding an opening in the rear of said tail-piece, said tail-piece having a central longitudinal guide slot leading forwardly from said opening, a fixed guide-post embraced by said guide-slot, and a rotary actuator means j ournaled in connection with said casing and eccentrically off-set to the rear of said lateral annular flange of said ail-piece to operatively cooperate therewith.
5. A lock-mechanism comprising a casing having at one end a pair of openings, a semiannular rotary bolt movable through said openings, said bolt having an inwardly extending radial arm at one end, a pivot stud upon which the free end of said radial arm is journaled, a tail-piece pivotally connected with said radial arm, said tail-piece having a lateral annular flange bounding an opening in the rear of said tail-piece, said tail-piece having a central longitudinal guide slot leading forwardly from said opening, a fixed uideost embraced by said uide-slot, a" g P 2:
rotary actuator means journaled in connection with said casing and eccentrically offset to the rear of said lateral annular flange ofzsaid tail-piece to operatively cotiperate therewith, said bolt having detent notches at its outer circumference adjacent to each end, a pivoted detent-tumbler having a transverse detent-bar receivable in one or the other of said notches, and means connect ed with said rotary actuator means for releasingsaid detent-tumbler prior to the actuation of said tail-piece.

A lock-mechanism comprising a casing having at one end a pair of openings, a semi-annular rotary bolt movable through said openings, said bolt having an inwardly extending radial arm at one end, a pivotstud within said casing upon which the free end of said radial arm is journaled, a tailpiece pivotally connected with said radial arm, said tail-piece having an annular lateral abutment near its rear end, said tailpiece also having a longitudinal guide-slot, a fixed guide-post extending transversely through said casing so as to be embraced by said guide-slot, a rotatable cam-plate having a peripheral seat-portion, means for jour naling said cam-plate in a wall of said casing in rearward eccentrically off-set relation to said annular abutment of said tail-piece, an external means for rotating said camplate, spring means for holding said camplate in normal initial position, an inwardly V and radially disposed actuator lug carried by said cam-plate to cooperate with said annular abutment of said tail-piece to actuate the latter to produce operative movements of said bolt, said bolt having detent-notches at its outer circumference adjacent to each end, and a pivoted detent-tumbler for cooperation with said detent-notches, said detent tumbler being normally related to said seat-portion of said cam-plate but adapted to be released by the rotation of said camplate.

A lock-mechanism comprising a casing having at one end a pair of openings, a semi-annular rotary bolt movable through said openings, said bolt having an inwardly extending radial arm at one end, a pivot stud within said casing upon which the free end of said radial arm is journaled, a tail piece pivotally connected with said radial arm, said tail-piece havingan annular lateral abutment near its rear end, said tail-piece also having a longitudinal guide-slot, a fixed guide-post extending transversely through said casing so as to be embraced by said guide slot, a rotatable cam-plate having a peripheral seat-portion, means for journaling said cam-plate in a wall of said casing in rearward eccentrically oil-set relation to said annular abutment of said tail-piece, an external means for rotating said cam-plate, spring means for holdingsaid cam-plate in normal initial position, an inwardly and radially disposed actuator lug carried by said cam-plate to cooperate with said annu lar abutment of said tail-piece to actuate the latter to produce operative movements of said bolt, said bolt having detent-notches at its outer circumference adjacent to each end,
a pivoted detent-tumbler for cooperation with said detent-notches, said detent tumbler being normally related to said seat-portion of said cam-plate but adapted to be released by the rotation of said cam-plate, and means externally related to said casing engageable by said rotary bolt when the latter is pro jected from said casing.

A look mechanism comprising a casing having at one end a pair of openings, a semi-annular rotary bolt movable through said openings, said bolt having an inwardly extending radial arm at one end, a pivot stud within said casing upon which the free end of said radial arm is journaled, a tailpiece pivotally connected with said radial arm, said tail-piece having an annular lateral abutment near its rear end, said tailpiece also having a longitudinal guide-slot, a fixed guide post extending transversely through said casing so as to be embraced by said guide-slot, a pair of rotatable camplates having peripheral seat-portions respectively journaled 111 opposite side walls of said casing in rearward eccentrically offset relation to said annular abutment of said tail-piece, spring means for holding each cam-plate in normal initial position, each cam-plate having an inwardly and radially disposed actuator lug to cooperate with said annular abutment or said tail-piece, an external hand knob for rotating one cam-plate, a key operated means for rotating the other cam-plate, said bolt having detcnt notches at its outer circumference adjacent to each end, and a pivoted spring pressed detenttumbler for cooperation with said detent-notches, said detent-tumbler being normally related to said seat-portions of said cam-plates but adapted to be released by the rotation of either of the latter.

A lock-mechanism comprising a casing having at one end a pair of openings, a semi-annular rotary bolt movable through said openings, said bolt having an inwardly extending radial arm at one end, a pivot stud within said casing upon which the free end of said radial arm is journaled, a tailpiece pivotally connectedwith said radial arm, said tail-piece having an annular lateral abutment near its rear end, said tailpiece also having a longitudinal guide-slot, a fixed guide-post extending transversely through said casing so as to be embraced by said guide-slot, a pair of rotatable camplates having peripheral seat-portions respectively journaled in opposite side walls of said casing in rearward eccentrically off set relation to said annular abutment of said tail-piece, spring means for holding each cam-plate in normal initial position, each cam-plate having an inwardly and radially disposed actuator lug to cooperate with said annular abutment of said tail-piece, an external hand knob for rotating one cam-plate,
