.Be it known that I, J osnrrr SOHECHTER, a citizen of Poland, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York,have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lock Mechanism; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, andto characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The present invention relates, generally, to improvements in lock-mechanisms; and
.the invention has reference, more particularly, to improvements in the construction and actuating means of locks of the rotary dead bolt type such as is shown and described in the prior Letters Patent of the United States heretofore granted to me, dated October 18th, 1921, and numbered 1,393,835.
The present invention has for its principal object to provide, in combination with a rotary dead bolt mechanism, a novel actuating means having combined therewith a hand manipulatable knob and a key operated means, said actuating means having a novel coupling mechanism for connecting said key operated means with said actuating means in normal operativerelation thereto, and said knob having means for automatically disconnecting said coupling mechanism from said key operated means when said knob is employed to operate said actuating means, so that the key operated means is not disturbed but remains inactive and uncoupled from the actuating means when the latter is operated by the knob.
Other objects of the present invention, not at this time more particularly enumerated, will be clearly understood from the following detailed description of the same.

With the various objects of the invention improved lock mechanism hereinafter set forth; and, the invention consists, furthermore, in the novel arrangements and combinations of the several devices and parts, as well as in the details of the construction of the same, all of which will be more fully described in the following specification, and
in view, the same consists, primarily, in the.

The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a top edge elevation and part section of the novel lock mechanism as applied to a door and door frame; Figure 2 is a longitudinal section taken on line 2 2 in said Figure 1, and showing the lock mechanism in locked position; Figure 8 is a View similar to that shown in Figure 2, but showing the lockmechanism in an initial stage of its releasing movement as controlled by the knob device thereof, and further showing the actuating means uncoupled from the key operated means; Figure t is a transverse longitudinal section, taken on line k4 in said Figure 2; Figure 5 is a fragmentzuy section similar to that shown in Figure 4, but illustrating the manner in which the knob device operates to disconnect the coupling means from operative relation to the key operated means; Figure 6 is a fragmentary or detail horizontal section,

Similar characters of reference are employed in all of the hereinabove described views, to indicate corresponding parts.
Referring now to said drawings, the reference character 1 indicates a casing for inclosing the lock-mechanism, the same having in one end wall suitably disposed openi'ngs2 and 3 to permit the passage of the dead bolt when the latter is operated. The reference character 4 indicates a rotary dead bolt of substantially semi-circular shape, and provided adjacent to one end with an inwardly projecting radial arm 5, the free inner end of which is pivotally mounted on a fulcrum stud 6 fixed within the casing 1 intermediate the openings 2 and 3.
The reference character? indicates a tailpiece, the forward end of which is pivotally connected with a coupling, stud 8 provided on said radial arm 5 of said rotary bolt. Said tail-piece 7 is provided adjacent to its rearward end with a substantially circular Opening he inner surface or Walls of which cooperate with the means provided for actuating said tail-piece to in turn operate the rotary bolt 1. Extending forwardly and longitudinally in said tail-piece 7 from said opening 9, and in communication with said opening, is a guide-slot 10. Fixed within said casing so as .to extend transversely therethrough in a location spaced rearwardly from and alined with the fulcrum point of said rotary bolt 4 is guide-post 11 which projects through said guide-slot of said tail-piece so as to control and guide the operative movements of said tail-piece when the latter actuated. The outer wall of said casing is provided with a suitably disposed opening 13 which provides a bearing in which is journaled the hub 14 of an actuating cam member15.
Said actuz-iting cam member 15 is preferably of elliptical outline, whereby its extremities 16, which are aimed with its long tudinal axis, provide depressing cams for purposes subsequently to be described. In order to assemble theknob operatively with the actuating cammember, the same is turned so that said lever lugs 22 are horizontally disposed, in which. position the shank 21 of the knob may be passed inwardly through the axial central opening 18 of the ca1n-member, the lever lugs 22 passing through the wing openings 19 into the chamber or guideway 23. After said lever lugs 22 are entered in the chamber or guideway 23, the knob is given a quarter turn, whereby the lever lugs 22 are turned across the inner end of the opening 18, so as to be disposed in vertical normal position within the chamber or guideway 23, and at the same time engaging the bottom of the chamber or guideway intermediate the wing openings 19, thus holding theknob and its shank secure against withdrawal from assembled relation to said acchamber or guideway 23, respectively on the opposite sides of said vertically disposed" lever lugs 22, are slide-blocks 24 which normally position themselves against the sides of said lever lugs 22, being yieldably held in such position by spring devices 25 interposed between said slide-blocks 24k and the ends of said chamber or guideway 23 (see Figures 4 and 6 of the drawings). One of said slide-blocks 2-1 is provided with an outwardly projecting key-block or connectorlug 26 which projects beyond the exterior surface or the actuating cam-member 15. A coverplate 27 is provided to extend over and close said chamber or guideway 23, the same being secured to the "face of said actuating cam-member by screws 28 or other suitable fastening means; said cover plate is also provided with a slot or way 29 through which said key-block or connectorlug 26 projects and through which it moves when actuated. i
In order to permit operation of ,the tailpiece and rotary bolt from the outer side ot the door by means of a key cont-rolled inecl'ianism. the innerwall of said casing 1 is provided with a suitably disposed openin 30 which provides a bearing for a rotary sleeve or hub 31. Said sleeve or hub 31 is provided with a central slot 32 adapted to receive the end of a. coupling tongue 33 of a suitable key actuated mechanism 34 connected with the outer side of the door with which said lock-mechanism is arranged. Formed in the outer side of said sleeve or hub 31, at its inner extremity, is a socket or receiving groove or seat 35 in which said key-block or connector-lug 26 normally engages itself to operatively connect, through said. sleeve or hub 31, the actuating cam member 15 with the key actuated mechanism 34. In order to enable the lock-smith, when assembling the lock mechanism, to assure himself that the sleeve or hub 31 is properly positioned to be engaged both by the 'coupling tongue 33 and the key-block or connector-lug 26, the said sleeve or hub 31 is provided adjacent to its base with a radial tongue 36, which when visible through an so tuating camanember. Arranged within said rotary bolt 4 is provided, adjacent to each end, with a detent notch 41. The free end of said detent-tumbler with its detent-lug 40 is normally swung toward said rotary bolt 4, and toward the actuating'cam member 15, by means of a compression spring 42, interposed between the same and the adjacent side wall of said casing 1. The detent-lug 40 engages in either one or the other of said detent notches 41 of the rotary bolt, to retain the same against operative movement at all times, until the detent-tumbler is first actuated to withdraw said detent-lug 40 from such holding engagement.
In mounting the lock-mechanism on a door, the same is secured by screws 43 to the inner side of the door 44. Connected with the door frame 45 is a bolt receiving socket or, keeper plate 46, secured in place by screws 47 which pass through the flange 48 of said plate 46. Additional fastening of the plate 46 may be provided by inserting screws 49 through the inner wall 46' of said plate 46, the outer wall 46 having enlarged openings 50 alined with said fastening screw positions so that a screw driver may be inserted therethrough to drive said screws home. It will be noticed that when the rotary bolt 4 is turned into ,the socket or keeper plate 46, the same is interposed. between the openings 50 and the screws 49 so that the same cannot. be tampered with .when the door is locked. Thesocket or keeper plate 46 is provided a with a transverse post 51 around which the bolt 4 passes, when turned into said socket or keeper plate.
The operation of the lock-mechanism when actuated from without the door by the key actuated mechanism '34 to retract said rotary bolt to move the same to its released or unlocked position is as fol.- lows -The proper key being lnserted in the key actuated mechanism 34, and turned, will rotate the key-barrel and coupling tongue 33 to thereby turn the sleeve or hub 81, which being normally engaged by the keyblock or connector lug 26 will cause a rotation of the actuating cam member 15. As the cam member 15 turns, one of its extremities 16 moves into depressing engagement with the detent-tumbler 39, swinging downwardly the same to thereby withdraw its detent-lug 40' from the engaged detent notch '41 of the rotary bolt 4, and consequently releasing the latter for operative turning movement. By the time the rotary bolt is thus released for movement, the rotation of the actuating cam-member 15 has carried its actuator lug 17 rearwardly into operative engagement with the wall or margin of the opening 9 of said tail-piece 7, thereby imparting to the latter a rear ward movement or pull. The rearward movement or pull on said tail-piece 7 is transmitted to the radial arm 5 of the bolt 4 causing an inward swinging movement of the same which imparts a rotary movement to the bolt 4, whereby the free end of the latter is withdrawn outwardly through the opening 2 in the casing end. Continued rotation of said cam-member 15 carries the actuator-lug 17 past the center of its swing and starts the same around in a forward direction toward the starting point. This movement tends to pull the tail-piece 7 up to the limit of its rearward movement, and thereupon swings the same laterally upon the guide-post 11 as a fulcrum, so
that the radial arm 5 is swung past the center of its rearwardly turning movement, whereupon the actuator-lug in swinging forward tends to push forwardly the tailpiece 7 consequently continuing the rotary movement of the bolt 4. As the actuatorlug 17 approaches the completion of its rotation it pushes the tail-piece forwardly until the radial arm 5 is swung to stopped position against the end of the casing 1, the attainment of which position completes the rotary movement of the bolt 4, so that its free end is withdrawn into thecasing 1 flush with the opening 3. The actuatorlug 17 upon completion of its rotation is stopped against the 'side of said slot 10 adjacent the junction of the latter with the opening 9. It will be understood, that the completion of the operative rotation of the cam-member 15 operates to position the same, so that said detent-tumbler 39 is free to swing back to normal position with the detent-lug 40 operatively engaged with a detent notch 41 of the rotary bolt. The above operations withdraw or rotate the bolt 4 from or out of the socket or keeper-plate 46, so that the door is released.

same outwardly in the chamber or guideway 23 against the tension of the springs 25, and until the slide blocks are stopped against the ends of said chamber or guideway. Since the key-block or connector-lug 26 is mounted upon or carried by one of said slide-blocks 24, it follows that the outward movement of the slide-block effected by the initial turning movement of the knob 20, moves the said key-block or connector lug 26 out of the seat 35 ofthe sleeve or hub 31, thus disconnecting said sleeve or hub 31, and consequently the key actuated-mechanism 34, from operative relation to the actuating cam member 15, preliminary to the imparting to the latter of operative rotary movement, as illustrated more particularly in Figure 5 of the drawings. Upon the abutment of said slide-blocks 24: against the ends of the chamber or guideway the independent preliminary rotative movement of said knob 20 ceases and thereafter continued turning of the knob 20 operatively rotates said cam-member 15, while at the same time holding said keyblock or connector-lug 26 in disengaged position, as shown inFigure S'of the drawings. Rotation of said cam-member 15 operates upon the tail-piece 7 to actuate the rotary bolt 4 in the same manner as is already above described.
\Vhile it is preferable to employ two slide blocks 24 in the manner above described and as shown in the drawings whereby a balanced pressure on the knob 20 is assured, it is really only essential that the slide-block on which the key-block or connector-lug 26 is carried be used, so that if desired the opposite slide-block could be omitted.
It will be understood, that by reason of the novel means comprised in the arrangement of knob Q0, lever lugs 22 and slideblock 24: carrying the key-block or connector lug 26, the knob may be employed to turn the actuating cam member 15 without disturbing or moving the key actuated mechanism from a normal position, and that consequently no disarrangement of the key actuated mechanismwill occur, all of which is highly desirable.
It will also be understood, that the rotary bolt 4 may be projected to locked position by reversing the rotation of the actuating cam member, through either the medium or" the knob 20 or key actuated mechanism 34, in which case the movements of the tailpiece 7, as above described, will be reversed.
I am aware that some changes may be made in the several arrangements and combination of the various devices and parts as well as in the details of the construction of the same, without departing from the scope of the present invention as above described, and as defined in the appended claims. Hence, Ido not limit my invention to the exact arrangements and combinations of the parts set forth in saidspecification, nor do I confine myself to the exact details of the I construction of said parts as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
Iclaim:
1. In a lock, the combination with a bolt mechanism of a rotary actuating cam therefor, a key actuated mechanism, said actuating cam having a movable connector-lug nor-. mally engaged with said key actuated mechanism to couple the same operatively with said actuating cam, a hand-knob associated with said actuating cam whereby a turning movementimparted to said knob will first move said connector-lug to disengage the same from said key actuated mechanism prior to imparting operative rotative movement to said actuating cam.
2. In a lock, the combination with a bolt mechanism of a rotary actuating cam there for, a key-actuated mechanism, a rotary coupling sleeve connected with said keyactuated mechanism, said sleeve having a receiving socket in its side, a spring pressed connectorlug slidably associated with said actuating cam to normally engage in said receiving socket of said coupling sleeve, a hand-knob journaled in said actuating cam, said hand-knob having lever means for initially moving said connector-lug out of said receiving socket of said coupling sleeve prior to imparting rotative movement to said actuating cam.
3. In a lock, a casing, a bolt device for projection from said casing, a bolt operating means, a rotary cam journaled in the front wall of said casing for actuating said bolt operating means, a key actuated mechanism having a coupling tongue, a rotary sleeve journaled in the rear wall of said casing with which said coupling tongue is engaged,
said sleeve having in the side of its body a receiving socket, said actuating cam having a guideway in its body, a slide-block movable in said guideway, a connector-lug carried by said slide-block to normally engage in said receiving socket of said sleeve, spring means for holding said slide-block in normal position, a rotatable knob projecting externally from the front wall of said casing, said knob having a shank journaled in said actuating cam, lever means on the inner end of said knob for first moving said slide-block when said knob is turned to disengage said connector-lug from said receiving socket of said sleeve prior to imparting operative rotative movement to said actuating cam.
4. A lock mechanism, comprising a casing having at one end a pair of openings, a semi-annular rotary bolt having an inwardly extending radial arm at one end, a pivot stud upon which the free end of said radial arm is journaled, said rotary bolt being positioned to move through said casing openings when rotated, a tail-piece within said casing pivotally connected with said radial arm, said tail-piece having an opening in its rear end-and a longitudinal guide slot extending forwardly from said opening, a fixed guide-post embraced by said guide slot, said bolt having detent notches at its respective end, a pivoted detent tumbler normally engaging a detent notch, a rotary actuating means journaled in the outer wall of said casing, said actuating means having peripheral cam means for releasing said detent means, said actuating means having an actuator-lug for cooperation with the opening of said tail-piece, said actuating means having a guideway and a central outwardly extended bearing opening, a knob having a shank journaled in said bearing opening, the inner end of said knob shank having oppositely extending lever lugs, slide-blocks movable in said guideway and arranged respectively on either side of said lever lugs, spring means for normally pressing said slide-blocks toward said lever lugs, one of said slide-blocks having a connector-lug, a key actuated mechanism, a rotary sleeve journaled in the rear wall of said casing, a coupling tongue interconnecting said key actuated mechanism with said sleeve, and said sleeve having in its body a receiving socket in which said connector lug is nor mally engaged.
