IVIOSQUITO-CURTAIN.

Specication of Letters Patent-No. 13,931, dated December 11,1855.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN S. BIARTIN, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Mosquito Shade or Curtain to be Applied to a Window; and I do hereby declare that the same is fully described and represented in the following specification and the accompanying drawings, letters, figures, and references thereof.

Of such drawings, Figure l, exhibits an inside elevation of a window` frame and sashes with my invention applied thereto', the same showing the window shade as depressed or expanded to its lowest position. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the said frame and sashes, but exhibiting the curtain in an elevated or contracted state. Fig. 3, is a vertical and t-ransverse section taken on the line A, B, of Fig. l.

In these drawings, F denotes the window frame, while, Gr, represents the lower, and H,`the upper sash thereof.

C is the mosquito curtain or shade which is composed of two parallel bars, a, b, a sheet c, of gauze or m'osquito netting and three or any other suitable number of elastic bands, d, (Z, CZ. The gauze or netting c, is attached to the bars at its two ends and when it is so connected with them, the curtain should be of a length and width to completely cover the window frame to which it is to be applied. Each of the said elastic bands when in a natural or contracted state, should be about one-half the length of the curtain when entirely extended, the said band being fastened at its two ends to the said bars, while between the said b ars it should be sewed or stitched or otherwise fastened to the netting in such manner as to present no impediment to the extension of the same.

The curtain s0 made has its upper bar fastened to the top of the window frame as seen in the drawings, and there should be a spring catch, e, or some other suitable contrivance applied to the lower part of the said frame as seen in the drawings, and so as to be capable of holding the curtain in an extended state after it has been drawn downward. The curtain when contracted as seen in Fig. 2, covers only the upper part or half of the window opening, and enables a person to obtain easy access to either of the sashes in order to raise or lower it as circumstances may require.

A curtain so made is simple in construction and efcient not only for the purpose of barring the window opening against the passage of insects, but of allowing air to circulate through it when either its lower sash is raised or its upper sash lowered.

What I claim as my invention is- The said new or improved manufacture of mosquito curtain as made of two bars, a sheet of cloth or netting, and a series of elastic bands arranged and applied and so as to operate together substantially as hereinbefore set forth.
