BLIND-SLAT ROD.
PECIFICATION formnglpart of Letters Patent No. 534,076, dated February 12, 1895.
Application iiledNOvember 17, 1894- Serial No. 529.133. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom, it may concern:
ing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the"art to which it appertains to make and-use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in the rods used on rolling slat window blinds; and the objects of my improvement are, first, to provide a metallic rod of a simple and cheap construction the rod having slots with bridges formed between them thereby dispensing with the staples now in use in wooden rods making a more durable and permanent construction; second, to provide a metallic rod having bridges formed between slots, the bridges in the rod connected to the slats of a window blind by screw eyes, the bridges and the screw eyes forming the pivots to operate the slats; third, to provide metallic rods for rolling slat window blinds, the rods attached to the blind slats by screw eyes and. having springs at their upper ends to close the slats when the rodsare disengaged from the holding pin attached to the blind frame. I attain these objects by the device and arrangement of the parts illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in Which Figure 1, is a vertical front view of a window blind having my improved rod attached. Fig. 2, is a vertical side view of the same. Fig. 3, is an enlarged detail front View of a part of my improved metallic rod. Fig. 4,- is an enlarged detail sectional view through the center of the slats, showing the screw eyes attaching the rod to the slats. Fig. 5, is a detail front view of the same.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
The blind Arepresents the usual form of a framed blind as used on windows. The blind frame is provided with a series of slats B, the slats having pivots formed on their ends operating in the frame in the usual manner, to open or close the slats as may be desired, the slats being-operated bya rod attached to the slats in a suitable manner.
The operating rod C is made of any snitable flat metallic material. A series of slots D is formed in the center of the rod, a series of bridges E being left between the slots. The slots are preferably formed with the ends of the slots circular as shown. The rod can be formed as a channel bar if desired with the edges turned up to give it stiffness. The lower end of the rod is curved to form a handle to operate the rod. A knob-or other form of handle can be used if desired.
A series of screw eyes F is inserted in the blindV slats. Before insertion in the slats the eyes are opened a sufficient amount to allow the bridges of the metallic rod to enter the eyes. When the bridges of the rod are hooked in the eyes, the eyes are closed to engage the bridges as shown.
A coiled spring G is attached to the rod at the upper end. The remaining end lof the spring is secured in any suitable manner to the blind frame. A pin or hook H is attached to the bottom of the blind frame. The rod is provided with one or more holes J to engage the rod by hooking it on the pin. To open the slats the rod is drawn down and hooked over the pin at the place desired. The rod when unhooked is drawn up by the spring to close the slats.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. In a blindslat rod, the combination with the blind slats of a metallic rod the rod having a series of longitudinal slots formed therey tween the slots, e series of screwfeyes inserted In testimony whereof I ex my signature in the blind slats Vthe eyes standing ab right in presence of two witnesses. angles to the slats and engaging the bars formed in the rod, a spring connecting the upper end of the rod to the blind frame, two holes provided in the lower end of the rod to engage a. pin attached to the blind frame, substentielly as and for the purpose set forth.
his WILLIAM HENRY MGFARLAND.
