in the county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination-Stencils, of which the following 1s a full, clear, and exact specification.

This-invention relates to stencils or markingtools, and'has for its object to provide an improved and simplified form of combination stencil embodying a plurality of marking dies or cutters.

It is the aim of the present invention to provide a circular marking tool or stencil having radiating dies or cutters and anvil or striking. heads, one of the latter being disposed diametrically opposite each of the former, and said dies alternating with said striking heads around the entire circumference of the circular tool. Other objects are to provide the tool with means for conveniently holding the same in position while in use, and to connect the cutting dies and striking heads to the body of the tool in such a manner that they may be easily replaced when worn.

The invention will be first hereinafter described in connection with the accompanying drawings, which constitute part of this specification, and then more specifically defined in the claims at the end of the description.

In the accompanying drawings, wherein similar reference characters are used to designate corresponding parts throughout the several views:

Figure 1 is a front elevation of a marking tool or combination stencil constructed substantially in accordance with this invention, the same bearing a series of numeral cutting dies.

Fig. 2 is a section taken diametrically of Fig. 1 on the line IIII thereof.

Fig. 3 is a front elevation of a modified form of tool bearing a series of letter cut= ting dies, and

Fig. 4 is a section taken diametrically of Fig. 3 on the line IVIV thereof.

Referring first to Figs. 1 and 2, the marking tool therein shown comprises a ringshaped body member 1 having an opening 2 through its center and provided with a series of radial sockets 3 in its periphery. Said sockets are preferably threaded internally,

as at 4, to receive the correspondingly threaded ends 5 of radially projecting cutting dies 6 and striking heads 7, which are arranged alternately in said sockets around the entire periphery of the body member 1. One of the striking heads 7 is arranged dia metrically opposite each of the cutting dies 6, so that when the tool is in use, there will always be a striking head in position to be hammered upon for driving any selected cutting die into the work.

but it will be understood that any other indicia may be substituted for said numerals, if desired.

he opening 2 through the center of the body of the tool affords a convenient means for supporting or holding the tool in any desired position while using the same for driving any selected die into a piece of work. The threaded connections of the cutting dies and striking heads with the body member 1 permits of the ready substitution of new dies or heads for old ones which may become too much worn to give good service.

As shown in Figs. 3 and 4, the ring-shaped body member 10 may be enlarged toaccommodate a large member of cutting dies 11 and striking heads 12, the tool being thus adapted to carry any reasonable number of said dies and heads. The body member 10, being wider than that shown in Figs. 1 and 2, is preferably formed with depressions or cavities 13 at intervals around both faces thereof, the cavities in opposite faces being in alinement, as shown in Fig. 4, to provide convenient means for gripping the tool between the thumb and fingers while in use. The cutting dies and striking heads in this form of the invention may be threadedly connected to the body member 10, as at 14, in Fig. 4, so that they may be removed as already explained in connection with the form of the invention shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The front face of the body member 10 may also bear indicia in line with each cutting die to correspond with the stencil on said die, as in the form of the invention first described. In this instance, the cutting dies may consist of a series of letters instead of numerals, but variations in the dies may be made Without departing from the invention.

In the above description it will be noted that the cutting dies and striking heads are described as threadedly connected to the body member, but I do not limit myself to this construction, for it is obvious that the cutting dies and striking ends may be cast in the body member and serve all purposes as well as the threadedly connected cutting dies and striking heads.

I claim:

1. In a marking tool, the combination with a circular body member, of radiating cutting dies and striking heads arranged alternately about said head with a striking head diametrically opposite each cutting die.

2. In a marking tool, the combination With a ring-shaped body member having an opening through its center for the purpose specified, of cutting dies and striking heads projecting radially from the periphery of said body member, one of said striking heads being arranged diametrically opposite each of said cutting dies.

3. In a marking tool, the combination with a circular body member, of radiating cutting dies and striking heads detachably secured to the periphery of said body memarranged diametrically opposite each of said 40 cutting dies.

5. In a marking'tool, the combination with a body member having internally threaded sockets disposed radially in its edge, of cutting dies and striking heads having threaded end portions to detachably engage in said sockets, one of said striking heads being arranged diametrically opposite each of said cutting dies. i

6. In a marking tool, the combination With a body member, of cutting dies and striking heads projecting radially from the edge of said body member, one of said striking heads being arranged diametrically opposite each of said cutting heads, body member having. registering depressions in 1ts opposite faces at intervals around the same for the purpose specified.
