Description

M. J. sKolTz TOOL,
Filed July 8, 1926 'mr/vesszs Patented Oct. 1, 1929 UNITED STATES MICHAEL J. SKORTZ, OIE CLEVELAND, OHIO TOOL Application filed July 8,
This invention appertains generally to tools and has more specific reference to new and useful improvements in bricklayers hammers.
The primary object of the present invention is to provide an improved hammer of the above character having associated therewith a removable cutting and scraping blade.
Another object of the present invention is the provision of new and novel means for removably securing the blade to the head of the hammer so that the said blade may be easily and quickly removed should it become worn or broken and a new blade secured in its stead.
A further object of the present invention is to provide such an improved hammer of the above character which is extremely simple yet durable in its construction, one which is practical and efficient in use, one which is cheap and easy to manufacture and one which can be placed upon the market at a reasonable cost.
Numerous other. objects and advantages of the present invention will become more readily apparent during the course of the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings forming a part of this ap plicat-ion and wherein like characters of ref erence denote corresponding parts throughout the several views:
Figure 1 is a side elevation, partially in section, of an improved hammer, constructed in accordance with the present invention and showing the removable blade secured thereto.
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on line 22 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a view somewhat similar to Figure 1 showing the manner in which the blade is removed.
Figure 4 is a detail perspective view showing the blade after it has been detached from the head of the hammer.
Referring now more in detail to the accompanying drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration has been disclosed a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the letter A generally indicates a bricklayers hammer and B a removable blade associated therewith.
1926. Serial No. 121,252.
The hammer A comprises in its construction a head 10 provided intermediate its ends with a socket 11 within which is secured one end of the handle 12. One end of the head 10 is provided with a substantially broad flat hammer face 13 while the opposite end thereof is reduced in thickness and provided at its inner end with an undercut shoulder 15. The reduced end portion 1 1 of the head 10 is also provided with a pair of spaced transverse openings through which are inserted suitable securing bolts 16 and 17.
The removable blade B is substantially wide and is reduced in thickness intermediate its ends to form a bevelled shoulder 19 while the outer transverse edge thereof is sharpened as indicated at 18. The inner reduced portion 20 of the blade B is adapted to engage the inner surface of the reduced end 14 of the head 10 and is provided at its inner end with a bevelled face 21 adapted to snugly engage within the undercut shoulder 15, the bevelled shoulder 19 adapted to engage the outer bevelled face of the reduced end portion 14 of the head when the blade is secured in position. The reduced portion 20 of the blade is also provided with a pair of spaced longitudinally extending slots 22 and 23, adapted to receive therethrough the bolts 16 and 17, said bolts projecting beyond the blade and having engaged thereon suitable washers 2 1 and nuts 25. The reduced portion 01' shank 20 of the blade B is provided in its rear side with annular recesses 2O which surround the outer end portions of the slots 22' and 23. The washers 24 have a snug fit on the bolts 16 and 17 and a snug fit in the recesses 2O so as to prevent any outward movement of the blade B.
WVhen it is desired to secure the blade B in position, the nuts 25 and washers 24L are removed after which the reduced inner portion 20 of the blade is placed in contact with the inner face of the reduced end portion of the hammer head, the said bolts 16 and 17 proj ecting through the slots 22 and 23. The blade is then moved inwardly so that the inner end thereof will engage within the undercut shoulder l5 and the shoulder 19 will abut against the end face of the reduced portion 14; of the head 10. The washers 24 and nuts 25 are then placed on the bolts 16 and 17 whereupon the blade will be firmly secured to the hammer. When it is desired to remove the blade, it is simply necessary to first remove the nuts 25 and Washers 24 after which the blade can be easily and quickly removed from the bolts 16 and 17. The blade may be removed and sharpened and replaced or a new one sub stituted therefor without withdrawing the bolts 16 and 17 from the reduced end portion 14-.
From the foregoing, it will be appreciated that there has been provided a novel and simplified bricklayers hammer having a removable blade associated therewith so constructed that it may be easily and quickly secured to or detached from the hammer as may be desired.
Changes in the details of construction may be resorted to without departing from or sacrificing the spirit of the invention so long as such changes fall within the scope of the appended claim.
What is claimed is:
A hammer of the character set forth, comprising a head having a reduced portion and provided at the innerend of said reduced portion with an undercut shoulder, bolts passing transversely through said reduced portion, a removable blade provided atiits front side with a shoulder contacting with the outer end of said reduced portion, a shank extending from the blade inwardly beyond said shoulder on the blade and resting in contact with the rear side of said reduced portion, the shank being provided with a beveled inner end contacting with said undercut shoulder and With elongated openings receiving the bolts and extending inwardly beyond the same, the shank being provided at its rear side with annular recesses surrounding the outer end portions of the openings, washers having a snug fit on the bolts and having a snug fit in said recesses, and nuts carried by the bolts for holding the washers in place.
In testimony whereof I aifix my signature.
