Description
KNIFE sscunme DEVICE Filed March 12. 1924 J 14 I 1.5 15 i 'l l 4 15' 2 1,? I!
INVENTOR A'ITORNEY WITNESS:
Patented Jan. 27, 1925.
UNITED STATES VINSON S. DIVERS, F EVERETT, WASHINGTON.
KNIFE-SECURING DEVICE.
. Application filed March 12, 1924. Serial No. 698,723.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VINSON S. DIVERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Everett, in the county of Snohomish and State of lVashington, have invented new and useful Improvements in Knife-Securing Devices of which the following is a specification.
My present invention has reference to means for effectively securing bits or knives in cylinder heads, side heads, profile heads or any other class of heads employed in wood working machines.
A further object is to provide a bit or knife carrying head of wood Working machines with a recess, one part of which is deeper than the other, a knife fitting in the deep part, a wedge engaging the knife, a block fitted in the wedge having a beveled part to engage the wedge, and a bolt swiv elly connected to the block for adjustably securing the same in the recess, and whereby the turning of the bolt in one direction will permit of the ready insertion and firm holding of the knife or bit on the head and the turning of the bolt in another direction will permit of the removal of the said bit or knife without necessitating the removal of the wedge block.
The drawing which accompanies and which forms part of this application, illustrates a satisfactory embodiment of the improvement reduced to practice, and wherein Figure l is a front elevation of a cutter head for a wood working machine having cutters removably fixed therein in accordance with this invention.
Figure 2 is a sectional view on the line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a sectional View on the line 3-3 of Figure 2.
In the drawing, I have illustrated a 1'0- tary cutter head of a conventional form. The cutter head is indicated by the numeral 1 and is mounted for rotation in the usual manner. The head 1 is round in cross section and is provided at determined spaced intervals with recesses 2. The inner wall provided by each recess, at one of the sides thereof, is notched, as at 3 so that this part of the recess is deeper than the other part thereof, In the deeper part of each recess 2 there is received the body portion of a cutter 4. The inner flat face of each of the cutters is engaged by a wedge plate 5, and
the plate in turn is engaged by a wedge face 6 on a block 7 which is snugly received in the recess 2. Each block 7 has a bolt opening 8 therethrough, and from its outer face each of the blocks 7 is formed with a larger round opening 9 for the head of a bolt. The bolt is indicated by the numeral 10 and has its shank screwed in a suitable threaded opening in the cutter head 1. The outer end of the bolt shank is formed with a re duced square or rectangular head 11 and with an annular outstanding flange or shoulder 12 at the juncture of the head and shank. The flange 12 rests on the wall 13 provided between the openings 8 and 9. The head 7 has two of its opposite flat faces provided with threaded openings, the outer walls of which are reamed and threaded and in these openings there are screws 14 whose heads are received in the said reamed portions of the openings. Each of the bolts has its inner end provided with a nonthreaded cross sectionally round extension 15 that overlie the flange 12 of the bolt. In this manner it will be seen that the bolt is revolubly associated with the block, it being understood that the opening 8 is nonthreaded. By this arrangement it will be further seen that a suitable socket wrench may be arranged over the head 11 of the bolt and the same turned to force the wedge block against the wedge plate and the latter against the cutter 4 so as to effectively hold the cutter on the cutter head. The binding engagement will prevent any lateral or tilting movement of the cutter, so that the groove or gutter made thereby will be equal-- ly proportioned throughout. By turning the bolt in an opposite direction, the same will be partly withdrawn from the recess 2, suflicient to permit of the removal of the cutter and if desired of the wedge plate without entirely removing the wedge block from the said recess.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of what I claim.
Having described the invention, I claim 2- In a device for the purpose set forth, the combination, a cutter head having a recess therein, one part of-whioh is deeper than the other pert,- a knife fitting in the deep part, a Wedge plate engaging the knife,
a block fitting'in the recess and. having a the inner'portion thereof and a larger opening surrounding the; bolt" opening: at the outer portion thereof a bolt passing throu h 10 the? opening for see-uring: the-block on t e cutter- 'hea'ch said: .bo'lt" having an: outer re g-posed points and havin striotedhead' and a flange" ntthe juncture of: tlie head and's11ahk,wliich latter rests on the shoulder provided between the two openingsin the b1oek, -screw members passin'g'tlirough the block at diametrically opreduced nonthreaded ends Which over ie the flange of theholt; for the' 'purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
VINSON S; DIVERS.
