IMPROVEMENT IN MATTRESSES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 139.202, dated May 20, 1873; application filed January 8, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HAMILTON E. SMITH, of Fitchburgyin the county of Worcester and and in the State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Mattresses; and Ido hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description therel l of, which Will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had tothe accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, in which drawing- "Figure, 1 Arepresents a longitudinal vertical section of this invention. Fig. 2 is an inverted planof the same, partly in section.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to an improvement on that class of mattresses which I have described in my patentNo. 103,096, dated May 17,1870, and which Ihave termed OolumnarMatt-ress.
mprovement consists in the ara tight envelope inclosing and protectingthe columns which constitute the body of my mattress from all sides in such a 'manner thatl said columns are securely retained in position, and that they are protected against dust or insects.
In the drawing, the letter A designates a mattress, which is constructed of a series of detached columns, a, a, each column being composed of a separate envelope filled with hair\ or other material suitable for the purpose.
The advantage derived from this construction of my mattress is principally based ou the fact that it enables me to use short hair, or even bran or other short material, for stuffing, while in mattresses of the ordinary construction only long materials can be used with success.
The columns a a, which constitute the body of my mattress, are inclosed in an envelope, B, of canvas or other suitable material, and, in order to steady the columns, they are secured to this envelope above and below.
By this arrangement the columns are retained in the required position, and at the same time they are protected against dust or insects, and a mattress is obtained which'is cheap, durable, and very convenient for use.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In combination with a mattress having a series of columns, a a, as set forth, the envelope B for covering; and supporting said col umns, substantially as herein described.
HAMILTON E. SMITH.
