Beit known that I, MAURrcn WILLIAM SMITH, Aof Lyndhurst, Hoddesdon,` in the county of Herts, England, a subject of the King of Great Britainandlreland, have invented certain new n and useful Improve* n ments in` or `Relating to` Quick- Release Bench-Visas, '(forrwhichl have filedapplilcations in England vOctober 24, 1918, 130,511.7,.in France April l, 1929, andin Belgium April 8, 1920,) of'which the following is a specilication.
This inventonfrelates to `quick release bench vises, and comprises a fixed jaw in which are mounted two half nuts, a movable jaw formed integral with a double sliding bar sliding in the fixed jaw, a clamping screw disposed between the two members of the double sliding bar, means for opening vise of this type.
and closing the half nuts from and into engagement with the clamping screw and means for retaining' the half nuts in their closed position.
The object of this invention is to provide an improved form of quick release bench A quick release bench vise made in accordy ance with this invention' comprises two half nuts carrying pins working in inclined slots in two sliding members, the said sliding members being adapted to move simultaneously and in opposite directions. The inclined slots in the sliding members `are formed for a portion of their length at one end parallel to the sliding face of the members to retain the halfl nuts in engagement with the screw.
Referring to the drawings filed herewith Figure l is an elevation of one form of vise made in accordance with this invention; Fig. 2 is a sectional planof the ixed Jaw; Fig. 3 is a cross section of the fixed )aw showing the half nuts engaging the clamping screw;
Fig. 4L is a cross section showing the half nuts clear of the clamping screw.
The jaw a of the vise is adapted to be secured to a bench by'screws or bolts through the holes b b. Within a housing c in the jaw a are disposed two half nuts d 0l. Each half nut is connected to a bar e e by a pin f f passing through inclined slots g g in the bars e e the bars e e working in Any force, therefore, tendingI toopen the Ytwo halfnuts. presses the pinsL f f onto these ,parallel pelis 921' y? and would :have notendelicytofmove the-Sliding hars e e as. .would a vertical slot inthe nuts. The slots g gf are provided with parallel or notched ends g2 g2 to lock the half nuts when inv positlon.
The slots .g g areparallel tokyone anothery i but inclined to the' sliding faceoffthe bars ce except at their endstg2 g2 where` they are parallel tothe sliding facejofvthe be V`the case if these slots were inclined'for their whole length.
The movable jaw is provided with a double sliding bar j y', and between the sliding bars is a clamping screw 7c adapted to be rotated by a handle m. Below the lowersliding bar is a square shaft u onwhich is mounted a handleo anda two Varm lever p ,29" provided with slots r r. The lever p p is connected to the bars e e by ins s s which pass through the slots, the half nuts d d are adapted to engage the clamp-V ing screw 7c, and are kept normally engaged with the screw by a coil spring t. W hen it is desired to move the loose jaw twithout the operation of screwing the handle, the squared shaft c is rotated by the handle o raising thekbar e and lowering the bar e, the pins f" traveling inthe inclined slots g g throwing the half ynuts outof engagement with the screw 7c so 4thatthe jaw can be movedforward or backward at will. 2. A quick release vise comprising a fixed j aw adapted to be attached toa bench, two half nuts mounted in said fixed jaw, a 'double sliding bar, `a movable jaw carried by said double sliding bar, saiddouble sliding bar being adapted to slide inthe said tween said half nuts, means for opening and closing said half'nuts, said means comprising vertical slots in l* said,y half nuts, pins carried by said half nuts, sliding members adapted to move simultaneously and in opin said vsliding members adapted to coact with the said pins carried by said half, nuts, aV square shaft disposed parallel with said double sliding -bar,'a two arm lever on said square shaft, slots formed in said ytwo arm lever, pins on said sliding members,'coacting with said slots in the two arm lever, a handle on said square shaft, and means for retaining thesaid half nuts in their closed position, said retainingV means characterized in that the slots in said sliding members are formed parallel for va portion of their length at one vend to the sliding faceso'fsaid sliding members, and a spring suitably disposed on saidV square shaft wherebythe Vsliding members y fare retainedin thel'ocking position.
