Description

A. J. KNIGHT. OIL BURNER.
I APPLICATION FILED Nov, 11, 1920. 1,391,481.
Patentedsept. 20,1921.
. FIQ -1 if I \\\\\\\\\\\\\\A\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ANDREW J'- KNIGHT, OF TOLEDO, OHIO.
OIL-BURNER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW J. KNIGHT,
a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have made an Invention Appertaining to Oil-Burners; and I dohereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing's, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to burners and particularly to those adapted for burning kerosons and other hydrocarbon oils as a fuel.
The object of my invention is the provision of asimple and improved burner of the character described which is simple and inexpensive in its construction and adapted to generate a liquid. fuel into a highly inflammable gas, and is'also adapted to use either a natural or artificial gas or gas generated from a hydrocarbon oil or both together, as desired.
The invention is fully described in the I following specification, and while, in its broader aspect, it is capable of embodiment in numerous forms, a preferred embodiment thereof is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,-
Figure l is a central vertical longitudinal section of a burner embodying the invention, and Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a hollow burner body, in the present instance, of conical form and closed at its top by a perforated or slotted burner plate 2 through which the gas from the interior of the burner is discharged. The burner 1 is provided at its lower end with a laterally extending hollow neck portion 3 having an open outer end.
A conical deflector 4- is mounted centrally on the burner top 2 with its side wall extending outward and upward in overhanging relation to the burner top openings to effect an outward deflection of the flame rising from the burner. The deflector is provided in its wall adjacent to its outer edge with a Specification of Letters Yatent. Patented Sept, 20, 1921 Application filed November 11, 1920. Serial No. 423,218.
gas generating passage 5 of spiral form. with its lower end connected to a supply .pipe 6 having communication with any suitable l source of hydrocarbon oil supply and with its upper end connected with a pipe 7 for carrying away the generated gas. The pipe 7 extends down through the burnerl and neck 3 and is provided without the outer end .ofthe latter with an ejector nozzle 8, by
.thereto.
I wish it understood that my invention is not limited to any specific construction,
arrangement or form of the parts, as it is capable of numerous modifications and changes without departing from the spirit of the claim.
Having thus described my invention,what
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,-
A burner of the class described, comprising a burner body having gas discharge openings in its top and having a hollow laterally extending neck portion open at its outer end, a' conical deflector mounted on the burner top and having a gas generating passage therein in communication at one end with a source of hydrocarbon oil supply, a pipe leading from the other end of the generating passage through the burner and neck thereof adjacent to its outer end, an ejector nozzle connected to the outer end of the pipe in position to discharge gas therefrom into the burner neck, and a valve controlled pipe opening communication between Ithe nozzle and a source of gas supply.
signed my name to his specification.
ANDREW J. KNIGHT.
