MODE OF .ATTAGHING EX'IING-UISI-IERS T0 LAMPS.

Be it known that I, F. A. JEWE'IT, 0f Abington, in the county of Plymouth and State of Massachusetts, have invented 0ertain newnnd useful Improvements in Caps or Extingnishers, Used for Spirit-Lamps, &0. and that the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, hereinafter referred to, forms a fu1l and exact specificat-ion of the smne, wherein I have set forth the nature und principles 0f my said improvements by Which my invention may be distinguished from other of a similar dass, together With such parts as I c1aim and desire 130 have seeured to me by Letters Patent.

The figures 0f the accompanying p1ate of drawings represent my improvements.

Figure l is an elevation of a lamp With my improvements applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section of the same.

The essential feat-ure 0f my improved lamp cap or extinguisher, consists in the manner of attaching it to the lamp, whereby the use 0f chains or other objectionable m0des 0f attachment is avoided, und the evaporation of the fluid from the wie-k, which takes place in all spirit lamps hitherto constructed, and prevents their being readily lightedis prevented.

By my improvements the cap is held down 0n the wick, With a constant pressure, when the light is extinguished, by means 0f a spira1 spring coiled around the wick taube, the said spring being distended While the cap is being placed over the Wick, und contraeted when the cap is removed from the same.

The cap is placed 0ver the wick, by lifting it up ti11 the mouth of the cap is brought over the top of the wick tube, (the spiral spring b being, 0f course distended) when, 0n relieving the cap from the hand, it Will be drawn down over the wick by the 0011- traction 0f the spira1 spring Whi0h by its elastic f0rce, Will hold tlre cap tightly upon the wick. WVhen the cap is lifted ofi? the wick tube, the contraction of the spring car ries it d0vvn by the side of the tube, where it hangs, as clearly shown in the drawings.

By the above description it Will be seen that the evaporation 01 the fiuid from the Wick is eflectually prevented, as the cap is tightly held upon the same by a constant pressure, W'hich result has never been attained in the lan1p caps that have heretofore been devised, while the manner of attaching t-he cap to the lamp obviates the objections attendant upon the use of chains, or other modes commonly employed.

Having thus described 1ny improvements, I shall state n1y claims as follows:

What I claim as my invention und desire t0 have secured to me by Letters Patent is Attaching the cap er extinguisher to the lamp, by means of a spiral spring coiled around the wick tube, and secured at one end to the cap, and at the other to the screw plate c, 0r any other convenient locality, whereby the cap is tightly drawn down over the wick as described.
