D. F. REESE. SAFETY VALVE AND BLOW-OFF 000K.
Patented Mar. 31, 1885.
VLLaL F wwL A omvn UNITED. STATES PATENT O rrioiE.
DAVID F. REESE, OE EVANSVILLE, INDIANA.
SAFETY-VALVE AND BLOW-OFF COCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 314,719, dated March 31, 1885.
Application filed June 18, 1884. (N0 morlolJ To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, DAVID E. REESE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Evansville, in the county of Vanderburg and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Safety- Valve and Blow-Off Cock, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to a certain new and improved article of manufacture consisting of asafety-valve and blow-off cock constructed in one device; and it has for its objects to combine in such single device means for allowing of the quick and rapid escape of the accumulated steam from the apparatus to which it may be attachedand means for admitting of the automatic discharge of steam when above a given pressure. These objects are attained by the devices illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is an elevation of my improved safety-valve and blowot'f cock shown in connection with avulcanizer. Fig. 2 is a sectional iew of the steam safety-valve detached from the vulcanizer.
The letter A indicates the vulcanizer, which is a vessel adapted to be placed over a suitable furnace, and has a cover, B, which may be screwed thereon or otherwise attached thereto.
(1 is a thermometer, and is intended to indicate the degree of heat within the vulcanizer.
D is a safety-valve, which is threaded at the bottom, so as to be screwed into the top of the cover 13. The valve is of tubular form, and from the main tube'thereof extends the cocktube E, which communicates with the interior of the main tube, and is provided with a cockplug, E.
D is a tubular piece of metal fitted to the tube D, and secured therein by means of the screw-thread cl cut thereon, by which it may be adjusted toa higher or lower position, as may be desired.
Within the tubular nut D is fitted a rod, D, having at its lower extremity a conical valve, f, having a seat at or near the center of the tube D.
Surrounding the rod D" is a spring, 0, of spiral form, the lower part of which bears against the top of the valve f and the upper against a plate or washer, d, which surrounds the rod D, and is prevented from rising by a set-screw, d, (should the nut D be removed or tampered with.) The spiral spring 6 is intended to counterbalance the pressure of the steam, and should be so adjusted as to resist the pressure up to 820 of heat, and allow it to escape, whenfiaO of heat are attained, through the aperture F. The cock E is intended to allow the steam to escape from the vulcanizer as soon as the rubber has been sufliciently vulcanized, as this enables the cover to be removed in about three minutes, whereas it requires in vulcanizers as heretofore constructed about sixty'minutes, which entails a considerable loss of time. Thus it will be observed that when steam reaches a degree of pressure in excess of that which the spiral spring is adjusted to withstand, the valve is lifted from its seat. and allowed to escape through the aperture F of the tube D. By means of the cock E, whether the steam reaches an excess of pressure before the rubber has become sufficiently vulcanized or not, it is allowed a quick and rapid discharge, whereby the vulcanizer shortly becomes cooled off. Thus it will further be observed that by my improved device these two necessities are provided for in a single-structure in a neat and convenient forin'and Without lumbering or occupying the surface of the top of the vulcanizer with an unnecessary number of devices.
Having described my invention, what I desire to secure by Letters Patent, and claim, is
As an improved article of manufacture, the safetyvalve and blowoii cock constructed in one device, and consisting of a main tube, a plug titted in one end, and an interior valveseat, a valve fitted upon the seat, having its rod extended through said plug.aspiral spring fitted upon said valve, a washer interposed between the spring and plug, and a set-screw to maintain the washer within the main tube when the plug is removed, and a cocktube extended from one side of the main tube communicating with the interior thereof, and provided with a cock-plug.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
DAVID E. REESE. Witnesses:
J. T. HINSON, G. W. DANNETTELL.
