Description
C. WAINWHIGHT,
v PLATE VALVE.V
APPLICATION FILED JUNE la. 1929.
. Patented sept.. 13,1921.
PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES WAINWBIGHT, 0F ERIE, PENNSYLVANIA.
PLATE-VALVE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 13, 1921.
Application filed June 18, 1920. Serial No. 389,916.
To all whom z't may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES VVAIN- wmeHT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Erie, in the county of Erie and State of' Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Plate-Valves, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my present invention is the provision of a plate valve construction possessed of the capacity of function ascribed to the construction that constitutes the subject of my contemporary application, Case A, of even date herewith and, in which bodily outward movement of the flexible plates is permitted when the said plates are opened in operation, this being materially advantageous inasmuch as it greatly increases the area of the port or ports over which the plate is arranged.
To the attainment of the foregoing the invention consists in the improvement as hereinafter described and definitely claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, hereby made a part hereof:-
Figure 1 is a plan View of my novel construction with a portion of the buffer and some of the flexible plates removed.
Fig. 2 is a diametrical section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1.-
Fig. 3 is a detail view of one of the flex ible plates.
Fig. 4 is a detail section showing the arrangement ot' one of the valve plates in the channel in the buffer. provided for its reception. Y
Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all of the views of the drawings. i
Among other elements my novel valve construction comprises a seat member 1, having a diametrical portion 2 and ports 2l at opposite sides of said portion 2 and in alinemcnt with each other. Connected by bolts 4 and nuts 5 with the seat member 1 is a buffer (5, convex at its inner side or rather at the inner sides ot its arms 7,-as indicated by 8. The said buffer 6 is also characterized by a protuberance 9 in opposition to the port 2 of the seat member 1, by transverse channels 10 in said protuberance 9, and by sockets 11 opposite the said channels 10. The construction also includes flexible valve plates 12 the intermediate portions of which are disposed in the said channels 10 whereby the end portions of said plates are left entirely free and hence are not liable to be worn or broken. Disposed in each socket 11 and arranged at the opposite side of one plate 12, with reference to the seat member l, is a spring 13, and carried by the seat member 1 and arranged in apertures 14 in each plate 12 are pins 15.
In the practical use of this construction it will be noted that the spring 13 cushions the opening movement of its complementary flexible plate 12; also, that the pins 15 serve to locate the valve plate complementary thereto relatively to the ports 3, and the socket 11 as well as to the channel 10 and the spring 13. The salient feature, however, of the present construction resides in the capacity of each of the valve plates 12 to open bodily, whereby the area of the ports controlled by said valve plates is materially increased and this without the imposition of strain on the valve plates.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
' 1. In a plate valve construction, the combination of a seat member having a diametrical portion and alined ports at opposite sides thereof, a buffer having a body portion and arms reaching laterally from opposite sides thereof and convex at their inner sides and also having a protuberance opposed to the diametrical portion of the seat and in which are transverse channels and further having sockets in communication with said channels, means connecting the buffer with the said member, pins carried by the said member and arranged in a pair in each socket, a coiled spring disposed in each socket, and flexible plates arranged in the channels of the bu'er and having apertures receiving said pins, whereby said plates are movable bodily and their end portions are free.
2. The combination in a plate valve construction of. a seat member having ports and a portion intermediate the ports, a buer connected with the seat member and having convex faces opposed to the seat member and also having .a protuberanee in which is a transverse channel, and a valve plate movable throughout its length in said channel and between the seat member and the bufelgwhereby the end portions of the plate ture.
CHARLES WAINWRIGHT.
