AIR-GUN.
Application ledrDecemkber 20, 1920.V ,Serial No. 431,815.
Be it known that I, CHARLES F. LEFEVER, a citizen of the United States of America, residin at Plymouth, in the county of Wayne and tate of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in- Air- Guns, of which'thev following is a specificato the ac- 'Figure l is a 'longitudinal` section through a 'gun showing in full .lines the loaded posi- -tion Aand in ring; Y
Fig. Qis a similar'view showing the position when ready for loadingg Figsx and 4 are cross-sections on line 3 3 and V1 -4 of Fig.r l.
A is thefalse barrel,
dotted lines the position after barrel. DfisV an abutmentV located at the 'l rear ofthe false'barrel, VKandE Eis the true barrel which extends from said abutment vrforward. Within the frame C is arranged a vbarrel F the Jforward end of whichl is in contact with the abutment D, while said barrel at its rear end is pivotallymounted on the pin G. H is an air compression cylinder slidably mounted within the barrelF. f I is the plunger or piston within the air cylinder, andlI is the plunger shank extending rearward 'there-from. is a springiabutment secured within the barrel E .near the rear end thereof,l and' K4 isthe fspring, one end fof which bears against said abutment while the other end-is in engagement with the piston I.
4The abutment .Ifis hollowl and is apertured atf its `forward end' for.I the passage of the plunger shank I', the .rear` end ofwhich has agroove Itherein for 'engagement withfthe Sear L, which latten-is `pivotally secured at 1L between eangsJ. gf the member Airte B the stock, and C ,the Jframe lconnecting'said stock and false Sear has a rearwardly extending arm L?,
M pivotally mounted'on the pin M. The construction as thus far described is one 1n which the spring is placed under'comspecicaton of Letters Patent.y Patlilltedsept. 13, il i which 'isin operative relationto theV trigger pression by sliding the cylinder H together Y with the piston I and shank I rearwarduntil the sear L engages the groove -I2 yin said shank. Thisy movement is effected lby azlever actuating mechanism, which first draw'sthe cylinder rearward as described-- and then re-` -turns-itrto".l its initialposition. It is, how.-
ever, necessary to providelmeans fori-loading the barrel E, whichgis accomplishedriby cutting away' the top of the frame and by.y moving thel barrel F.; downward Sol aslto: expose the abutmentD and entranceend-eo'f the bai-l .1
spring by thefollowing construction;
At the forwardend of -thecylinder I-I--is Athe airdischarge -tube N-fwh'ich telescopes into` the barrel? E ,andrform's -ay means .for forcing the shotto its seat. This air tube therefore forms, a guide fork holding lthe cylinder H in alinementwith .the false barrel until in its:rearwardmovementv the tube .1, s.
N is disengaged from the barrel E. As soon as thus` disengaged, the barrel F being pivving portion vof the' framei and .coupled by a .link Q with adownward-projectionRon-the v cylinder I-I.-- This downward ,projection ex- ,tendsfthroughu a longitudinal slotj'inthe lower portion of the barreLF/and the ar-` rangement is such that whenA the` leverlOfis operated, 'it will draw the lcylinder I-I rearward in alinement withlth'efshooting` barrel until the' tube Nfis disengaged and will then continue the rearwardf movement of the cyl;-
inder, while the barrel F-isedepressed bythe Y shank 1,.11th`e tensionofithespringfis rc2- 4downwardjpu'll of the link-Q. Duringthis vmovement the spr-ing K isxbeing compressed, e..
-but asisoon as ythes'ear engages kwith the .7100.. v
nal position, the initial pressure of the links Q will force thev barrel F upward to close the breech, while the forward movement of the lever will force the cylinder I-I forward, engaging the tube N with the barrel .E and forcing the shot Yto its seat. 'Ihe gun is then ready for firing and the pulling of the trigger will disengage the sear from the shank I', permitting the spring K to force the plunger I forward, compressing the air in the cylinder and discharging the shot.
One of the novel features of the construction is the depression of the barrel F to expose the breech and tosimulate the action o f a breech-loading fire arm. This action is accomplished with perfect safety regardless of the factY that the spring is being compressed, for any accidental release of the spring will only result in pushing the barrel outward again. .In other words, there is nothingv which could possibly catch the fingersof the operator in the breech in case of accidental release of the springs. The construction is also simple and inexpensive to manufacture and is one in which the compression of the spring'and engagement of the shank with the sear is easily performed. What I claim as my invention is:
1 1. In an air gun, the combination with a shootingbarrel and a frame rigid therewith,
" of an air compression cylinder in alinement therewith, a piston in y-said cylinder7 a spring, andmeans pivoted to said frame for simultaneously compressing said spring and mov ing said cylinderA laterally to expose the A breech oftheshooting barrel for loading.
'2. In an 'air gun, the combination; with a lshooting barrel and a frame rigid therewith, of an airVV compression cylinder normally alined therewith and covering the breech thereof, a piston, a spring, and a lever mechanism upon said frame for simultaneously retracting said piston, coinpressing' said spring and moving said cylinder laterally to expose thebreech. of said shooting barrel for loading.
3. In an air gun, the combination with a shooting barrel, ofa hollow frame cut away adjacent to said shooting barrel, an air compression cylinder within said hollow frame normally infalinement with said shooting barrel, afpiston insaid cylinder, a piston shank, aV spring, a sear, means Aupon said framel forretracting said piston to compress said spring Vand engage said shank with said sear vandl for moving said cylinder laterally'to'expose the breechfof said shooting 'barrel for loading., Y
` 11. In an air gun, the combinationV with a shooting'barre'hof a hollow frame having Aa' portion cut away adjacent to said shooting barrel, a. barrelv withinV said hollow lframe normally in alinement with said shooting barrel andpivotally mounted at its rear end to permit of downward move'mentV to expose breechv of the shooting barrel for loading.
Y 5. In an air gun, the combination with a false barrel, of a shooting barrel therein, a
Ydownward movement which will expose the hollow frame secured to said false barrel and cut away adjacent to saidv shooting barrel to expose the breech thereof, a barrel within said hollow frame normally cover-ing the breech of said shooting barrel and pivotally mounted at its rear end to permit of depression to expose said breech, a cylinder within said pivoted barrel, an air discharge tube for said cylinder telescopically engaging said shooting barrel and Vholdin said pivoted barrel in alinement therewith, a pisf ton within said cylinder, a piston shank,a spring, aV sear, a lever for compressing the spring, anda link for connectingfsaid lever with said cylinder, whereby theoperation of said lever will retract said cylinder,`pis
ton and shank to engage the latter with the sear and willvdepress said pivoted barrel to expose the breechfof the shooting barrel upon the disengagement ofl said air tube from said shooting barrel'. Y ,l Y
6. In an. air gun, the combinationwith a false barrel7 aV framesecured thereto and cut away adjacent to said false barreha shoetiiig barrel within said false barrel, an abutment in said false barrel through' which said shooting barrel extends, a barrel within said frame pivotally mounted at its rear end to permit of movement into and out fof alinement with said Yfalse barrel, a cylinder slidably mounted in said pivoted barrel' having a downward projection extending through a longitudinal slot in said pivoted barrel, a piston in said cylinder, a piston shank, a spring abutment in they rear of said pivoted barrel, a spring engaging said abutment and piston, a sear mounted in said spring abutment engageable with the end of said piston shank, a trigger for Vdisengaging said sear from said shank, aV lever for compressing said spring, and a link connecting said'lever with the downward projection upon saidcylinder, whereby the movement of said lever will simultaneously retract said cyl-inderand piston, 'compressing' said spring :andV will move said pivoted barrelV downward to expose the breech of the shooting barrel.
