To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, AXEL ELoF' SPONG- BERG, a subject of kingof Sweden, and a resident of #360 60th street, borough of Brooklyn, county of Kings, city and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mechanical Toys, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to mechanical toys, and especially to that class wherein a jointed human figure may be caused to move with simultaneous rotation of a fan, by means of a spring motor, or by a breeze impinging upon the blades of said fan.

The purpose of this invention is to provide amusement at the expenditure of but little energy, this result being attained by the plurality of operative means mentioned.

Further advantages will become apparent as this specification proceeds.

Referring to the drawing Figure 1 is a front view of an apparatus embodying'the present invention.

Fig. 2 is a side view of Fig. 1.

In amusement devices of the character herein described, it is desirable to combine simplicity operation with maximum amusement.

My device is made by mounting upon a base 1 a pair of flat duplicate pieces 2, 2 of wood or any other suitable material, to serve as legs for a human figure.- A flat piece 4 serves as trunk and head of the figure, and is movably supported on the legs by a pin 7.

Mounted on the same base with the figure is a casing 10, adapted to contain a suitable spring motor, which may be wound by a crank 16. To a smaller crank 5at; the front of the casing is attached a pair of duplicate piece 6, 6 which serve as arms, being retained by the fiat heads of pin 9. It will now be apparent that any movement of crank 5 would be transmitted to the arms and trunk of the figure, so that the latter would assume a variety of successive postures, owing to its jointed construction.

large pulley 14 is contained in the casing, and'is mounted upon the shaft indicated in Fig. 2 by dotted lines, being the sameshaft which bears the front crank 5. The crank and pulley 14 will thus move in unison upon rotation of said shaft. This shaft and pulley are connected to the motor in any suitable manner, which detail it is aside from the purpose of the invention to illustrate. However, upon cranking the spring motor by rear crank 16, the motor will cause crank 5 to rotate in a counter clockwise, so that, if the illustrated position of the figure be taken as the starting posture, three quarters of a revolution would bring the crank and figure to the position indicated by the dotted lines at 11. The motor has been introduced to make the action of the figure more regular and effective, as well as though the rear crank regularly.

If a cord or belt 13 is used to connect pulleys 8 and 14, the rotation of the lower pulley will be transmitted to the fan, and the latter will thus rotate when the figure is in motion. It may be noted that the fan itself could be used to drive the apparatus if it were placed in the path of a strong breeze, and the motor be made superfluous- If the motor were omitted, my invention wouldstill be intact and would operate satisfactorily by having the rear crank mounted directly upon the same shaft with thefront crank. Having thus fully described my invention, I claim, r

A toy including a jointed figure whose parts are adapted to move in a'base supporting said figure, a post upon said base having a rotatable crank mounted therein, a pin connecting the free end of said crank to the upper pair of movable extremities of said figure, and meansfor rotating said crank, with means for transmitting said movement to other parts of said toy includparallel planes, 7

A toy including a movable figure consisting of jointed parts permitting move ments in parallel planes, a base for said fig ure having a casing upon the same and a crank mounted in said casing, a pin passing through the free extremity of said crank and through the upper pair of extremities of said figure, an extension upon said casing, a shaft mounted in said extension and provided with amultibladefan on one extremity and a pulley upon the other, a pulley upon the axis of said crank, a belt connecting said pulleys 15 and means for rotating said fan and moving said figure including a manually operated crank connected axially to said first crank.
