PATENT OFFICE.
MECHANICAL TOY.
This invention relates to mechanical toys of the kind in which means'operated by a current of air, such as a toy windmill, or a wheel with obl1que.blades, is employedv for the actuation of a toy figure, whereby the toy in its entirety can be placed On a radiator and operated by the moving current of air, or may be placed before an electric fan and operated thereby.
Generally stated, the object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved construction, wherebyv the toy figure is that of a human being having a movable torso and movable arms, and whereby the torso or body is actuated by the motive power, in a back and forth manner, thereby to produce or simulate the effect or appearance of a man sawing wood.
It is also an object to provide certain details and features of construction and combinations tending to increase the general efficiency and desirability of a mechanical toy of this particular character.
To these and other useful ends, the invention consists in the matters hereinafter set forth and claimed and shown in the ac companying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan of a mechanical toy iiivolving the principles of the invention.
Figure 2 is a side elevation of said toy, with certain portions thereof shown in vertical section, the section being taken on line 22 in Figure 1.
As thus illustrated, the invention comprises a platform or base 1, upon which a curved shield 2 is mounted, together with the toy windmill or wheel with oblique blades 23 mounted to rotate about a vertical axis, whereby it may be operated by placing the toy on the top of a radiator, or by so placing the toy in front of an electric fan that the current of air will be deflected upwardly by the shield 2 and caused to turn the wheel.
The toy figure as shown comprises the legs 4, the feet of which are attached to the base at 5, in any suitable manner, and the body or torso 6 is pivoted on the upper portion of the sheet metal legs at 7, so that the said body or torso may rock back and forth about a horizontal axis. The wheel 3 furnishes the motive power and is provided with a crank pin 8 which is connected by a rod 9 with the shoulder pivot 10 of the toy figure. The arms 11 are pivoted at 10 and are suitably connected to the bucksaw 12,

which latter rests upon the stick of wood 13 supported by the sawbuck 14:, which latter may be of any suitable character.
1V ith this construction, when the wheel 3 brated back and forth in the manner indicated by the dotted linesin Figure 2, and the saw 12 will be reciprocated upon the stick of wood in a natural manner, so that the general appearance and effect'will be that of a person sawing wood.
It will be seen, therefore, that the combination and construction are such that power is communicated through the arms of the figure to the saw, to reciprocate the saw horizontally, when the power device is operated by a current of air.
Without disclaiming anything, and without prejudice to any novelty disclose-d, What I claim as my invention is:
1. Ina mechanical toy having instrumentalities to simulate a person sawing wood, the combination of a base, a rotary power device carried on said base, a figure having a rocking torso pivotally carried on said base, shaft arms pivoted on said torso,
a buck saw rigidly connected to the hand portions of both of said arms, for operation by the arms of said figure, with one arm above the other, so that both hands are visible from either side of the toy, the saw and arms in effect forming a single rigid element which is free to swing upward about the pivot of said arms, means to simulate an object being cut by the saw, and a power transmitting connection from said power device to said figure, serving to communicate power through said arms to said saw, whereby said torso is vibrated about a horizontally disposed axis and said saw is reciprocated by said arms.
2. A structure as specified in claim 1, said power device comprising a wind wheel mounted to rotate about a vertically disposed aXis behind said figure.
3. A structure as specified in claim 1, said toy figure having legs rigidly connected to said base, the torso being pivoted upon the upper portion of said legs, and said arms being rigid with said saw.
4. A structure as specified in claim 1, said power transmitting means being disposed in rear of said figure and connected to the pivot of said arms.
5. A structure as specified in claim 1, said power device comprising a wind wheel is rotated, the body or torso 6 will be vi-' mounted on said base to rotate about a vertically disposed axis, and a shield to deflecta current of air upwardly against the under side of said Wheel, when the toy is placed in front of an electric fan, said base being also of a character to rest upon the top of a radiator, so that said wheel may be rotated by the upwardly moving current of warm air.
6. A toy comprising a saw, a figure having arms connected to said saw, a power device, and means including only a single pivoton said figure to communicate power from said device directly to said arms, so that the body of the figure is excluded from the transmission of power, and through said arms to said saw, to reciprocate the saw, the body being pivoted in position to support said arms and power communicating means. 7. In a mechanical toy having instrumen'talities to simulate a person sawing wood, the combination of a base, a power device carried on said base, a figure having a rocking torso pivotally carried on said base, arms pivoted on said torso, a saw connected to said arms, means to simulate an object being cut by the saw, and a power transmitting connection from said power device to said figure, said power device comprising awind wheel mounted on said base to rotate about a vertically disposed axis, and a shield to deflect a current of air upwardly against the under side of said wheel, when the toy is placed in front of an electric fan, said base being also of a character to rest upon the top of a radiator, so that said wheel may be rotated by the upwardly moving current of warm air.
Specification signed this 21st day of August1925.
