Description

C. A. MOORE AND D. K. THORNTON. AUTO SHOE EXPANDING TOOL. APPLICATION FILED OCT. 30. 1920. 1,3 9, 37, PatentedSept. 6,1921.
ATTORNEY UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES A. MOORE, OF ELIZABETH, AND DAVID K. THORNTON, OF ROSELLE PARK, NEW JERSEY.
AUTO-SHOE-EXPANDING TOOL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 6, 1921.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, CHARLES A. MOORE and DAVID K. THORNTON, citizens of the United States, residing at Elizabeth and Roselle Park, respectively, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in Auto-Shoe-Expanding Tools, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to tools for expanding the shoe of an automobile tire for the easy insertion of the inner tube.
One of the objects is to provide hooks for catching the opposing flanges or beads of the shoe, and means to which both of said hooks are pivoted and operation of which means will effect separation of said hooks and spreading of said flanges.
Another object is to provide a device of this nature which shall be simple of construction, cheap to manufacture, and efficient for the purpose for which it is designed.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
All of these objects are attained by the means hereinafter described and claimed, and fully illustrated in the accompanying drawing comprising one sheet, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of our device inserted in a section of a shoe ready for operation.
Fig. 2 is a similar view but showing the device operated so as to open the shoe.
Like characters of reference refer to like parts in both views.
This invention contemplates the providing of a pair of hooks pivoted at different points to one end of a handle and each adapted to grasp a respective flange of the shoe of an automobile tire and adapted to be operable by said handle for eflecting opening of said shoe.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 represents a member having a handle portion 2 and bifurcations-3 and 4.
A length of stout wire or rod 5 is bent upon itself to form a hook at 6, and has its ends bent so as to encircle a pivot bolt 7 which passes through the furcation 8.
A similar length of wire or rod 8 is bent upon itself to form a hook at 9, and has its ends bent at member 5 so as to encircle a pivot bolt 10 which passes through the furcation 4. Member 8 also forms a curved portion 11 in which the inner tube may be placed before using the instrument.
In use the parts are placed as shown in Fig. 1 with the hooks 6 and 9 gripping the beads of the tire, the handle 2 is then moved to the position shown in Fig. 2 with the re sult that hooks 6 and 9 are forced apart thereby opening the shoe until the inner tube can be easily shifted from the hollow 11 into the opened shoe.
WVhile we have described what we deem to be the most desirable embodiment of our invention, it is obvious that many of the details may be varied without in any way departing from the spirit of our invention; and we therefore do not limit ourselves to the exact details of construction herein set forth nor to anything less than the whole of our invention limited only by the appended claims.
What we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a device of the class described. the combination of a handle member having a bifurcation, and a pair of hook members, each pivotally mounted on a respective one of the furcations of said handle member.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination of a handle member, and a pair of hook members pivotally mounted on said handle member and each comprising a single length of rod or wire bent upon itself and formed into a hook at its bend and into a pair of bearings at its ends.
In testimony whereof we have afiiXed our signatures.
CHARLES A. MOORE. DAVID K. THORNTON.
