As shown most clearly in Figs. 1 and 3 the base 7 and the'supporting member 8 are provided with openings to receive the fastenings by means of which. the bracket is secured when adjusted in the required position. The outer end of the supporting member 8 is provided with an opening 9 of" approximately T-fo'rm. The protector or shield is adapted to occupy a position above the shade roller, as indicated most clearly in Figs. 2 and By having the protector disposed in the manner shown it prevents dust from settling upon the shade which is extremely objectionable. The protector is transversely curved and is supported at its ends by the brackets which form sustaining means for the shade roller. A curved bar 11 is secured to the inner side of each end of the protector and one end eX- tends to form a shank which is'adapted to engage a keeper 10. The shank is desig: nated at 12 and is provided at one end with a shoulder 13 and at its opposite end with a lateral extension 14. The keeper 10 is comprised between the shoulder 13 and the lateral extension 14:, hence the protector is positively held in the required position when applied to the brackets. The curved bar 11 is provided along its outer edge with in wardly extending ears 15 which are apertured to receive fastenings by means of which the curved bar is secured to the protector. or shield. The protector or shield preferably comprises two members or sections lG'and ll', which have slidingengagement whereby the protector is adapted to be lengthened or shortened as occasion may require according to the width of the window or the relative position of the supporting brackets. .One of the sections has its longitudinal edgepor tions recurved to form guide ways which receive the longitudinal edge portions of the companion section. As shown most clearly in Figs. 2 and 4, the outer section 16 has its edge portions inwardly curved as indicated at 18 to receive the edge portions of the relatively inner section 17.

In the modification shown in Fig. 6 and the detailed views thereof, the shade roller 1 is of the spring actuated type whereby the shade will automatically wind thereon in a manner well understood. The shield or protector and the parts associated therewith are substantiallythe sameas hereinbefore 'described in detail. The brackets 19 forming mountings for the shade roller and protector are of ordinary and well known construction with the possible exception that portions are partly cut from the brackets and pressed laterally to form the keepers 10 to receive the shanks of the bars 11 'at the ends of the shield or protector.

As shown in Fig. 1 the chain 2 passes over the roller 4 carried by staple 8, the casing 23 being tubular in shape and carrying a plunger 5 This plunger 5 isengaged by means of a coilspring 6"-.which is also mounted in the casing 3 and holds the chain 2 under tension. The plunger 5 is provided with an eye 7 which eye may be Secured in any suitable or] desired manner to the casing or window frames, in thisway permitting the chain 2 to be held at a proper tension for efficient operation.

In Fig. 6 is shown a modified form of the fixture which is adapted to cooperate with the chain, and this fixture comprises a plate 20 having laterally bent flanges 21 arranged in parallel relation. The roller 22 is interposed between the flanges 21 and journaled thereon, this roller 22 being adapted to receive the chain 2%, The plate 20 may be per manently fixed to the window frame by means of, suitable securing means such as pins (npt shown) passing through the apertures 23 formed in the plate 20. i
