Description

F M. HARE.- SAND S HIELD FOR OIL WELLS.
APPLICATION FILED DEC.14, 1920.
1,389,550, Patented Aug. 30, 1921.
UNITED STATES FRED HARE, or KIEFER, OKLAHOMA.
, SAND-SHIELD FOR OIL-WELLS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 30, 1921.
Application filed December 14, 1920. Serial No. 430,687.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRED M. HARE, a' c1t1- zen of the United States, residing at Kiefer, in the county of Greek and-State of Okla? homa, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sand-Shields for Oil- Wells, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my present lIlVeIltlDILlS the provision of a shield for oil wells, calculated to effectively protect the cups and valves of the well tubing against sand. f To'the attainment of the foregoing, the invention consists in the improvement as hereinafter described and definitely claimed.
In the accompanying'drawings, forming part hereof h Figure 1 is a view illustratlng my novel shield as properly arranged relatlvely to well tubing,
Fig. 2 is a horlzontal section, on a large scale, taken in the plane indicated by the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in both views of the drawings.
My novel shield l is applied on what is generally designated the anchor sectlon of well tubing; the said anchor section 2 being provided at 3 with one or more apertures.
The shield is preferably formed of metal in general tubular form, is open at its lower end as indicated by 4, is provided about the proportional distance illustrated above the end 4 with an aperture 5, and is also provided'with an upper reduced end portion 6 which receives and is connected by a thread 6 to the anchor section 2 and is calculated to maintain the major portion of the side wall ofthe shield 1 in spaced relation to the anchor section 2 so that a space about. the
anchor section 2 is afforded within the major portion of the Shleld from a point above the opening or openings 3 to the lower end of the shield 1. I
The practical advantage of my novel shield will be fully appreciated when it is stated that the aperture '5 is intended to limit the level of the fluid in the well for the purpose of keeping the floating sand from gettlng low enough to enter-the shield 1 at the lower end 4 thereof; the said end'4 being open and sufficiently large to render the sue- I tion so light that it will notlift the sand. Therefore when the well is 'fillcd'with sand up to the open end 4 of the shield 1 it will make its presence known whereupon the ficulty may be overcome by raising the ing so that the shield 1 will rest a few feet above and clear of the sand.
Having described my invention, what I dif tub I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent,
1. The combinationv with the apertured anchor section of oil welltubing, of a sand shield open at its lower end and provided with an aperture adjacent to said lower enoand also provided with an upper reduced end portion snugly receiving and connected to the anchor section and adapted to maintain the major portion of the shield in spaced re lation about the anchor section.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a sand shield for oil wells, of general tubular form, open at one end and apertured adjacent to said end and having at its opposite end a reduced tubular portion adapted to snugly receive'and be connected to a well tube.
' In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
