Description
Dec. 10, 1929. w..G. BlsBE Patented Dec. 10, 1929 WALTER G. BISBEE AND BEN 1 HOFFMALLOF BRISTOW, OKLAHOMA swAB RUBBER non on. WELLS Appli-cation led January 21, 1926. Serial No. 82,832.
The object of this invention is to provide a swab rubber or a packing element of this class with suitablereinforcements properly spaced and positioned so as not to enhance the natural packing tendency of the rubber body, but which will at the same time prevent the collapse of the body during the various operations for which such a structure is adapted. l
Another object resides in the construction of cap members for protecting the entremities of the rubber and in constructing e2:- tremit-ies of the packer body in such a way as to facilitate the positioning and retaining oi' the cap members in position and permitting the passage or fluid at points where same is essential.
Reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters of reference designate the vcorresponding parts throughout the several views, in which,
Fig. l is a vertical sectional view showing the parts in position tobe assembled.
F ig. 2 is a perspective of the assembled structure showing the reinforcing elements in dotted line7 and Fig. 3 is a view of the reinforcing elements. The swab rubber body A is a cylindrical structure formed with a longitudinal passage which is enlarged centrally to produce a chamber B. The upper and lower extremities of the body A are tapered as at C-D to form truncated cone portions designed 'for the reception of the caps E-F. The body of the swab is provided through out its structure with longitudinally extending reinforcing Astrips G of suitable material which, in the present illustration, extend from points adjacent the upper end to points adjacent the Y lower end. These reinforcing elements are of sufficient number and properly spaced to provide the necessary resiliency in the body and at the same time retain the same in th J normally desired extended position The reduced upper and lower portions of the central passageway are slotted as at b to provide for the passage of fluid and the cap members E-F may be similarly slotted as shown at e. The slots in the cap member E may extend across the top of the latter as at E and as illustrated in the present structure. I
rlhe assembled device is shown clearly in Fig. 2, the caps E and F being of suflicient width to extend a substantial distance along the inclined -faces of the truncated eXtremities of the body. By this arrangement the outer face or' the body A is free to engage the inner wall of the casing and to expand or contract sufficiently to enable the proper operation of the part.
What we claim as new and useful and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. In a swab rubber, a resilient body member formed with a central passage, and caps enclosing the extremities of said body member lormed with central openings adapted to register with the passage in said member, the passage in the body member being enlarged centrally and the reduced portions ofthe vpassage being slotted to acilitate the movement of the iuid therethrough.
2. In a swab rubber, a resilient body member and radially yieldable, reinforcing elements of liat stock bowed from end to end,
