VERNON V. MITCHELL, 0F WHITNEY POIN T, NEW YORK.
SKATE-SHABPENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 23, 192.1.
Application filed August 28, 1919. Serial No. 320,342.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VERNON V. MITCHELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Whitney Point, in the county of Broome and State of New York,'have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Skate- Sharpeners, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in devices for sharpening skates, that will be light, conveniently carried and by which skates may be sharpened without removing from the foot; it relates more particularly to a device adapted for holding both a flat file and round file on opposite sides of the implement. With these objects in view my invention consists in certain novel features of construction and arran ement of parts as will be hereinafter fulfly described and pointed out in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a side view of a preferred form of my device.
Fig. 2 is an end view of a preferred form of my device.
Fig. 3 is an end view of a modified form of my device.
Fig. 4 is an end View of another modified form of my device.
Fi 5 is an opposite side view of the modified orm of my device as shown in Fig. 3.
The same reference characters denote like parts in each of the several figures of the drawings.
In carrying out my invention A represents a file holding support, composed of the handle support plate 2, and beneath it a two faced longitudinal guiding flange 3 which is mounted on the bottom of plate 2. On the one face of the guiding flange 3, I have the longitudinal rectangular recess 4 extending the full length of the flange and beneath plate 2. Within the recess 4, I mount the file 5, which is of the flat rectangular variety, and extends the full length of the recess 4. The file is slightly smaller in thickness than the depth of recess 4 and when inserted therein, rests within the recess 4, held in position, clamped by the set screws 6, 6, 6 mounted in plate 2. On the opposite face of flange 3, and beneath plate 2, I have the longitudinal curved recess 7 extending the full length of the face of flange 3. Within the recess 7, I mount the file 8, which is round and is supported in its position by means of the bands, 9, 9 fastened in any convenient removable manner to the bottom of plate 2. Mounted on the top of plate 2, I have the handles 10, 10 for reciprocating the device.
In another modified form of my device as shown in Fig. 4, I have the handle plate 2, and mounted beneath it the guiding flange projection, single faced, 3. In the face of this guiding flange, I have the .longitudinal rectangular recess 11* extending the full length of flange 3 and beneath plate 2, within which recess I mount the flat file 5 as before described.
In another modified form of my device shown in Figs. 3 and 5, I have the plate 2 and the guiding single faced flange 3 and in the face of the guiding flange, I have the longitudinal curved recess 7 extending the entire length of the flange, and within the recess I mount the round file 8 as before stated.
' In use the device is applied as follows: If a flat surface is to be sharpened, it is placed over the upturned edge of skaterunner, the edge of the latter resting squarely against the lower or bearing face of the flat file. The face of the guide flange is placed against the runner, then by reciprocal movement of the device thereon, the edge of the runner may be filed off true and square. If it is desired that the bottom of the runner shall present a. concave surface, the side of the guide having the round file will be used, thus presenting the convex surface of the file to the runner-guided and reciprocated as be fore, until the desired result is obtained.
It will be seen from the foregoing that I have produced a simple cheap and alternate skate sharpener.
Having thus described my invention what I! claim as new and for which Idesire Letters Patent is as follows:
1. A skate sharpener consisting of a handle mounting plate, a guide flange projecting from beneath the same, a rectangular longitudinal recess extending the length of the guide flange, adapted to receive and hold a flat file, means for removably clamping said file therein, and a flat file so mounted therein.
2. In a device of the class described, an
elongated handle mounting plate, a flange depending from the under side of said plate intermediate the longitudinal edges thereof and provided at its upper ends adjacent the handle mounting plate with a curved recess extending substantially the length of the guide flange and on its other side at its upper end and adjacent the handle mounting late with an angular recess, loops dependmg from the handle mountin plate beyond the ends of the guide flange or supporting the ends of a round file and securing the file in the curved recess and means-extending through the upper side of the handle mounting plate for securing a flat file in the'angu- 1 larrecess of the guide flange.
f 3. A skate sharpener consisting. of a handle mounting plate, having a two faced guide flange vertically projecting from beneath the same, .a rectangular longitudinal recess in the guide face extending the entire length of one face, a flat file removably mounted therein; a curved longitudinal recess in the opposite guide face, extending the entire length of the face, a round file mounted partially therein, means for removably mounting the file in said recess, handles mounted in said plate.
7 In testimony whereof I have aflixed my signature.
