Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 16 1921.
Application filed August 23, 1919. Serial No. 319,508.
' To all whom it may concern:
is a specification.
My invention relates to lmprovements in stockings and the object of the invention is to devise a simple and -economlcal means for distributing the strain of the garter cl p .upon the stocking which ordinarily occurs at one point, so as to'obyiate the breaking.
of stitches/and the formation of ladders and other breaks, and it consists of thearrangement and construction as hereinafter more particularly explained.
The figure represents a side elevation of the stocking top with the garter clip attached.
1 represents a tab of suitable material which is comparatively non-elastic and sufficient in strength to receive the full strain of the pull of the garter. The tab is suitably attached in proximity to the top of the stocking 2 andmay be of any shape preferably rounding outward at the bottom so that the strain upon the stocking may be distributed evenly. 3 represents a line of stitching reinforcement extending around the stocking in a plurality of curves 4, so as not to affect the elasticity of the stocking fabric which would occur if a straight line of stitching were employed and yet which will bind the stitches together so that they will not draw apart. The said stitching extends entirely around the stocking leg in a general direction transverse of the stocklng. r
The reinforced stitching is run around the stocking in scallop form so as to receive the strain from the tab at all points. The strain under ordinary conditions being exerted at one point causes the garter to break the stocking stitch resulting in the fermation of ladders and drop stitches.
By means of the tab and the reinforced stitches, the full strain at the point of attachment of the garter clip is distributed radially thus eliminating the major strain at any point as shown in Fig. 1. and overcoming the formation of the so-called ladders, dropv stitches and breaking ,of the weave. Although I have described one tab only it will of course be understood that ,more than one tab can be used according'to the number of garter clips employed.
What I claim as my invention is In a stocking, a continuous scalloped line of stitching extending entirely around the stocking leg a'general direct-ion transverse to the length of the stocking at a point a small distance from the upper edge of the stocking and adapted to prevent runs, tears and ladders from passing downwardly into the body of the stocking and to permit of the free lateral expansion of the stocking fabric to prevent rigid binding of said fabric at said line of stitching without distorting the original contour of the said stocking.
