To ('7? 1572')? it may, concern Be it known that I, SAMUEL S. COLT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Orange, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Holding or Tying Means for Molding Apparatus; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The present invention relates, generally, to improvements in molding apparatus employed in concrete construction; and the invention has reference, more particularly, to improved devices to be used with the cribbing and retaining members or elements used to provide a form of producing or molding therein a concrete structure, or the like.
The present invention has for its principal object to provide a novel and simply constructed holding or securing means, comprising in connection therewith an arrangement of adjustable alining elements which may be variously employed for holding and securing in properly alined relation the various members of a cribbing or form, and providing a tying means which can be readily removed from the poured structure when it is necessary to disconnect and take down the several members of the cribbing or form.
The invention has for its further object to provide a novel holding and tying means for the proper adjustment and disposition of the mold-boards or cribbing members and the usual board retaining members or uprights used in connection therewith, said means comprising in connection with the usual tierod, or similar elements ordinarily employed, suitably constructed wedge-engaging elements adjustably mounted upon said tie-rods or elements, but adapted to be secured in fixed positions upon said tie-rods or elements for the reception of wedges to be driven in place so as to secure the several cribbing or moldelements in properly alined relation to produce a smooth-faced wall or other structure, and one of uniform thickness.
Other objects of the present invention not at this time more particularly enumerated will be clearly understood from the following detailed description of the present invention.
lVith the various objects of the present invention in view, the said invention consists, primarily, in the novel holding and tying means for a cribbing or molding apparatus; and, the said invention consists, furthermore, in the novel arrangements and combinations of the various devices and parts, as well as in the details of the construction of the said parts, all of which will be more fully described in the following specification, and then finally embodied in the clauses of the claims which are appended to and which form an essential part of said specification.
The present invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a view, showing in elevation fragmentary portions of one of the cribbingwalls, an upright retaining element and a pair of horizontally disposed retaining members or elements in engagement with the upright, said view showing in connection therewith a portion of one of the tierods or members extending beyond and from the outer face of the cribbing-wall, and having mounted thereon, a holding and tying means made according to and embodying the principles of the present invention.
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional representation of the several devices and parts illustrated in said Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a detail face view of the said devices and parts, look ing in the direction of the arrow as in said Fig. 1.
Fig. 4: is a view, showing the various devices and parts arranged in a manner similar to Fig. 1, but illustrating in connection with the holding and tying means, an auxiliary engaging element, permitting in connection with the various devices and parts, the use of a wedge or wedges the angular surface of which is different from the angular surface of the wedge or wedges shown in connection with the devices and parts represented in said Figs. 1, 2 and 3.
Fig. 5 is a side-elevation, and Fig. 6 an end face view of a holding or tying means provided with a wedge-separating projection or guide.
Similar characters of reference are employed in all of the above described views, to indicate corresponding parts.
Referring now to the several figures of the drawings, the reference-character 1 indicates a fragmentary portion of one of the cribbing walls of a mold-form of any suitable size, comprising suitably arranged cribbing boards or sections, against the outer faces of which are placed the usual and desirably spaced retaining members or posts 2, and the reference-character 3 indicates the usual post or upright-engaging and usually horizontally placed strlnger-pleces or elements. The reference-character 4 indicates one of the usual tie-rods 'or members extending across the space of the form, from face to face, as is usual, each member or element 4 having a portion 5 which projects through a hole or opening 6 in the cribbing-wall 1, and extends beyond the outer face of the said wall, as shown in Figs. 1, 2- and 4 of the drawings.
As shown, the projecting portion 5 of the tie-rod or element 4 is of such length, that it extends beyond the usual board-retaining member or post 2, and between and beyond the horizontally disposed post or uprightengaging stringer-pieces or elements 3.
As shown more particularly in Figs. 1 and 20f the drawings, there are movably dis.
posposed upon the projecting portion 5 of the tie-rod or element 4, for proper adjustment, a pair of holding or tying devices, as 7, each device consisting, essentially, of a main body-portion 8 provided with a longitudinally extending tubular part or duct 9, for arrangement of the said bodyportion 8 upon the rod or element 4, as will be evident. Thesaid tubular body-portion 8 is also provided with one or more outwardly ext-ending projections, as 10, or other suitable means, which is internally screw-threaded, for the reception of a set-screw 11 which can be screwed down within said screw-threaded socket thus provided, for bringing the endportion 12 of the screw into firm holding engagement with the tie-rod or element 4, so
as to prevent movement of the said holding or tying devices 7 upon said rod or element 4, as will be clearly evident.
As shown, each device 7 is also formed at one end of its body-portion 8 with a member or portion 13, the flat face-portion 14 of which lies entirely in a plane located at right-angles to the main central axis extending longitudinally through the said body-portion 8. The marginal configuration of the said member or portion 13 is usually circular, as indicated in dotted outline at 15 111 Fig. 3 of the drawings, but said bounding edge may be of any other marginal configuration, as willbe clearly understood. Upon its opposite end, the body-portion 8 of each device 7 is formed with a member 16, preferably of arectangular or, square marginal configuration, the outer face-portion of the member 16 being in the form of two angularly disposed wedge-receiving surfaces 17 and 18, the planes of which are located at acute angles to the maincentral axis extending longitudinally through said bodyportion 8, and the ridge 19 where the said surfaces 17 and 18 meet, lying in a plane of the central axis of the said body-portion 8.
Thus, when the two devices have been positively secured in their desired positions upon the rod or element 4, wedges 20 and 21 can be driven in opposite direction, and in contact respectively with the wedge-receiving surfaces 17 and 18 of the device 7 located between the cribbing wall 1 and the post-engaging stringer-pieces or elements 3', so as to bring these assembled elements into proper alinement. Disposed upon the said tie-rod or element 4, and adjacent to the other device 7, is an auxiliary plate or disk, as 22, formed with a hole or opening 23, so as to be mounted upon the rod or element 4. One face of said plate or disk 22 is flat, as at 24, and its other face-portion bein in the form of two angularly disposed surfaces 25 and 26, either of said surfaces being adapted to be placed against the flat faceportion 14 of-the member or portion 13 of said device 7, and a pair of wedges 27 being driven. between the reviously mentioned stringerpieces or elements 3 and the fiat face 24 of said plate or disk 22, for securely and positively maintaining the assembled and alined relation of the various members of the cribbing or mold-form, as will be clearly understood.
Of course it will be evident, that the same results may be obtained by dispensingwith the auxiliary plate or disk 22 and the wedges 27, in which case the flat face-portion 14 of the member or portion. 13 of the said second device 7 is arranged directly against the stringer-pieces or elements 3, the binding or holding action between the various parts resulting when the wedges 20 and 21 are driven into place, as will beclearly understood. I
In some cases, where wedges of different angularity are to be used, an auxiliary plate or disk, as 28, seeFig. 4 of the drawings is mounted upon the tie-rod'or .element 4, as shown in said Fig. 4, the plate or disk 28 being placed adjacent to and in contact with either one of .the angular surfaces 17 or 18 of the device 7, and with the angular surfaces 30of the wedges 29 driven in contacting engagement with either of the angularly disposed surface-portions or faces 31 or 32 of the-said auxiliary plate or disk 28.
If desired, 1 may provide theholding r tying means hereinbefore described, with a projection or extension, as 33, in alinement with the rod-receiving duct or opening of the device, .said projection or extension, as
will be seen from an inspection of Figs. 5 and 6, providing a dividing wall or separator, against the edge-portions 34: and 35 of which the wedges when inserted in place are guided so as to properly drive said wedges home, without distortion of the assembled parts, as will be clearly evident.
hile in the foregoing description I have set forth the use of my novel holding or tying means in connection with a cribbing or mold-form such as is used in the production of concrete walls and similar structures, it will be understood that the said holding or tying means is capable of other uses where it is necessary to properly tie and aline different members or elements with relation to one another, and while it may be preferable to provide the tie-rod or element with two of such holding or tying devices or means, as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings. still I am fully aware that in many instances the use of but one of said holding or tying devices, with the tie-rod or element 4, will meet the required conditions.
I am also fully aware that changes may be made in the general arrangements and combination of the various devices and parts as well as in the details of the construction of the same. without departing from the scope of the present invention as set forth in the foregoing specification and as defined in the clauses of the claims which are appended thereto. Hence, I do not limit my present invention to the exact arrangements and combinations of the various devices and parts as described in the said specification, nor do I confine myself to the exact details of the construction of the said parts, as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
I claim 1. In a form or cribbing for use in the erection of concrete and similar structures, in combination with a cribbing wall, a wallretaining member, a stringer-piece, and a tie-rod, a holding or tying means mounted upon said rod, said means being provided with an angular wedge-receiving surface, and a wedge movable upon said surface for bringing the assembled elements into holding alinement.
2. In a form or cribbing for use in the erection of concrete and similar structures, in combination with a cribbing wall, a wallretaining member, a stringer-piece, and a tie-rod, a holding or tying means movably mounted upon said rod, said means being provided with an angular wedge-receiving surface, means for securing said holding or tying means in a fixed position upon said rod, and a wedge movable upon said wedgereceiving surface for bringing the assembled elements into holding alinement.
3. In a form or cribbing for use in the erection of concrete and similar structures, in combination with a cribbing wall, a wallretaining member, a stringer-piece, and a tierod, a holding or tying means comprising a tubular body movably mounted upon said rod, means connected with said body for securing the same in a fixed position upon said rod, engaging members connected with said tubular body, one of said engaging members being formed with angular-receiving surfaces, and a wedge movable upon either of said wedge-receiving surfaces for bringing the assembled elements into holding alinement.

In a form or cribbing for use in the erection of concrete and similar structures, in combination with a cribbing wall, a wall retaining member, a stringer-piece, and a tie-rod, a holding or tying means comprising a tubular body movably mounted upon said rod, means connected with said body for Securing the same in a fixed position upon said rod, engaging members connected with said tubular body, one of said engaging members being formed with oppositely placed angular wecge-receiving surfaces, and wedges movably disposed in opposite directions upon said wedge-receiving surfaces for bringing the assembled elements into holding alinement.
5. In a form or cribbing for use in the erection of concrete and similar structures, a cribbing wall, a wall-retaining member, a stringer-piece and a tie-rod, a holding or tying element mounted upon said rod, and a perforated plate also mounted upon said rod, said plate having an angular surface portion, combined with a wedge for bringing the assembled elements into holding alinement.

In a form or cribbing for use in the erection of concrete and similar structures, a cribbing wall, a wall-retaining member, a stringer-piece, and a tie-rod, a holding or tying element movably mounted upon said rod, means connected with said holding or tying element for securing the same in a fixed position upon said rod, and a perforated plate also mounted upon said rod, said plate having an angular surface-portion, combined with a wedge for bringing the assembled elements into holding alinement.

In a form or cribbing for use in the erection of concrete or similar structures, a cribbing wall, a wall-retaining member, a stringer-piece, and a tierod, a holding or tying means comprising a tubular body movably mounted upon said rod, means connected with said body for securing the same in a fixed position upon said rod, engaging members connected with said tubular body, one of said engaging members having a fiat surface in a plane at right angles to the longitudinal central axis of the said tubular body, and the other engaging member having a plurality of angular wedge-receiving surfaces in planes at acute angles to the longitudinal central axis of said tubular body, combined with a wedge for bringingthe assembled elements into holding alinement.

In a form or cribbing for use in the erection of concrete or similar structures, a cribbing wall, a. wall retaining member, a stringer-piece, and a tie-rod, a holding or tying means comprising a tubular body movably mounted upon said rod, means connected with said body for securing the same in a fixed position upon said rod, engaging members connected with said tubular-body, one of said engaging members having a flat surface in a plane at right angles to the longitudinal central axis of the said tubular body, and the other engaging member having a plurality of angular wedge-receiving surfaces. in planes at acute angles to the longitudinal central axis of said tubular body, and a perforatedplate also mounted upon said rod, said plate having angular surfaceportion for engagement with either of the engaging members of said holding or tying means, combined with a wedge for bringing the assembled elements into holding alinement.
9. In combination with a rod, a holding or tying means mounted upon said rod, and an engaging element also mounted upon said rod and adapted to be brought into cooperating engagement with said holding or tying 1 means.
10. In combination with a rod, a holding or tying means movably disposed upon said for securing said holding or fixed position upon said rod, and a beveled wedge-receiving element loosely mounted upon said rod and adapted to be brought into cooperating engagement with said holding or tying means.
11. In combination with a rod, a holding or tying means comprising a tubular body for mounting the same upon said rod, said body being provided with a screw-threaded port-ion, a set-screw therein for securing said rod, means tylng means in a body in a fixed position upon said rod, and a wedge-receiving element loosely mounted upon said rod and adapted to be brought into cooperating engagement with said holding or tying means.
12. A wedge-engaging holding or tying element, comprislng a tubular body for mounting said element upon a rod, said body having a beveledv wedge-receiving surface located at one end of said body.
18. A wedgeengaging holding or tying element, comprising a tubular body, for mounting said element upon a rod, said body having a beveled wedge-receiving Surface located at one end of said body, and said body being provided with a screw-threaded portion, and a set-screw therein.
14. A wedge-engaging holding or tying element, comprising a tubular body for mounting said element upon a rod, said body having at one end thereof a plurality of angularly disposed Wedge-receiving surfaces.
15. A wedge-engaging holding or tying element, comprising a tubular body mounting said element upon a rod, said body having at one end thereof a plurality of angularly disposed wedge-receiving surfaces, and said body being provided with a screw-threaded portion, and a set-screw therein.
16. A wedge engaging, holding or tying element, comprising a tubular body adapted to be mounted upon a rod, said body being provided with a wedge-engaging or receiving surface, said body being also. provided with a screw-threaded portion, and a setserew screwed into said screw-threaded portion.
