Description

C. L. WECHT.
TOY WHEELBARROW.
APPLICATION FILED JAN-3.1920.

CHARLES L. WECHT, OF LOGANSPORT, INDIANA.
TOY WHEELBARROW.
Application filed January 3, 1920.
To all whom 2'2? may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES L. lVnonr, a citizen of the United States, residin at Logansport, in the county of Cass and utilte of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toy lVheelbarrows, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
My invention relates to improvements in wheelbarrows, adapted for use as toys, but not restricted to this use as they may be constructed in full sizes for working purposes.
An important object of the invention is to provide means whereby the framework of the wheelbarrow may be constructed of a single section of metal, such as a wire, rod. or pipe, bent to produce the several desired elements.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of the above mentioned character, which is simple in construction, and inexpensive to manufacture.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a wheelbarrow embodying my invention,
Fig. 2 is a similar View, showing the lower portions of the wheelbarrow, and,
Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken on line 33 of Fig. 1.
In the drawings, wherein for the purpose ofillustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 5 designates the frame-work of the wheelbarrow, as a whole. This frame-work is formed from a single section of metal, such as a rod or wire, and bent between its ends, forming longitudinal members 6. These longitudinal members cross each other at a point 7, and are preferably bound together by a staple 8. These members may be connected by being fused, bolted or riveted together. The forward extensions 6 of the longitudinal members 6 carry at their forward ends a transverse element or axle 9, formed by bending the rod or wire, as is obvious. The longitudinal members 6 are bent at spaced Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 16", 1921. Serial No. 349,336.
points 10, forming U-shaped legs 11. he rear ends of the longitudinal members 6 serve as handles, and carry hand-grips 12, which might be omitted, if desired.
The numeral 13 designates a rolling element or wheel, preferably in the form of a wooden cylinder, while any form of wheel may be employed. The wheel 13 is provided with a central opening for the reception of a sleeve or bushing 14, preferably formed of brass, and rotatable upon the axle 9.
he numeral 15 designates the floor or bottom of the body of the wheelbarrow, arranged upon the frame-work 5. The staple 8 engages the bottom 15, together with staples 16 and 17. The staples 17 are preferably arranged at or near the points 10 of bending. The body further comprises a forward end 18, preferably permanently secured to the bottom 15, and carrying guide rods 19. Sides 20 have their forward ends adapted for insertion behind the rods 19, and are equipped with transverse bars 21, adapted for insertion within sockets 22. I wish it understood that the invention is not restricted to the particular form of body shown and described, as it may be varied, if desired. The body of the wheelbarrow may be changed in form, shape, and material. The body or bottom portion 15 may be formed of metal instead of wood, in which case the frame-work of the wheelbarrow may be bolted, riveted or fused thereto.
From the foregoing description it is thought that the invention should be readily understood.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same, and that various changes in the shape, size, and arrangement of parts, and the material of construction, and manner of connection, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of my invention, or the scope of the subjoined claim.
aving thus described my invention, I claim A wheelbarrow including a frame'formed of a single metal rod bent intermediate its ends to provide an axle and two side bars, the side-bars extending rearwardly from the axle in parallel relationship to each other for a short distance, then crossing and diverging to the extremities of the rods, the
diverging portions of. the side-bars being In testimony whereof I hereunto efiix my bent 1glow 11Warilllylto form parallel [Ci-shaped signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
mem ers, a W ee mounted on sai axle, a 1 7 body mounted on the frame, and fastening v CHARLES WECHT' 5 means securing the crossed portions and the Witnesses:
diverging portions of the side-bars to said CLYLE ENYART body. CHAS. 0.,BROWN.
