'J-CQDEAN.
HAND TRUCK.
Patented July I, 1885.

WITNESSES fl UNITED STATES PATENT DFFIGE.
JOHN o. DEAN, OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA.
HAND-TRUCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 321,695, dated July '7, 1885.
Application filed May 19, 1885. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN G. DEAN, of Indianapolis, Marion county, Indiana, have invented a new and Improved Hand-Truck, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide certain new and useful improvements in the construction of hand trucks made of metal tubes.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts and details, as will be fully described and set forth hereinafter, and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a cross-sectional view of my improved hand-truck, on the line w .10, Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a front view of the same. Fig. 3 is an enlarged side view of the joint of a longitudinal and cross tube. Fig. 4 is a sectional plan view of the same on the line y y, Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a detail sectional view of the nose.
The side bars of the truck are formed of tubes A, round or oval in cross-section, the diameter from front to rear being greater than the diameter from side to side, so as to offer greater resistance in the direction of the greatest strain.
The tubes Aare united by aseries of transverse tubes, B, round or oval in cross'section, and having their ends split and bent in opposite directions to form curved tongues C, which fit against the inner sides of the tubes A, and are each held to the said tube by a rivet, D, passed through the tubes A and the tongue.
The rivetsD are each provided with ahead, E, on the outer end, and on the inner end with a stem, F, having less diameter than the rivet, whereby a shoulder, H, is formed, which rests against the inner surface of the inner side part of the tubes A, whereby the rivet also acts as a brace to prevent the sides of the tube being pressed together transversely.
The nose J is provided with the end parts, K, which fit in the ends of the tubes A, and are welded in the same.
The legs L are riveted on the under sides of the bars A, as are also the bearing-pieces M for the axle N, on which the wheels 0 are mounted.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A hand truck having its side pieces formed of tubes oval in cross-section,the longer axes extending from front to rear, and the shorter axes from side to side, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. In a hand-truck frame, the combination, with two side tubes, of transverse tubes having their ends split to form opposite tongues, which are rested against and riveted to the inner sides of the side tubes, substantially as herein shown and described.
3. The combination, with the side tubes, A, of the transverse tubes B and the rivets D, having stems F, forming shoulders H, substantially as herein shown and described.
4. In a hand-truck frame, the combination, with the side tubes,A, united by cross-pieces, of the nose J, having end parts, K, which are inserted and welded in the lower ends of the tubes A, substantially as herein shown and described.
JOHN G. DEAN.
