Doon-PANEL AND THE LIKE Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 9, 1921.
Application ineal october 3o, 1920. serial No. 420,684.
To aiZZ whom 'it may concern.'
Be it known that I, JOSEPH REGENsTEIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful lImprovements in Door-Panels and the like, of which the following is a specification.
rlhe present invention relates to certain improvements in doorv panels and the like,
` such as are used in connection with doors of automobiles and other vehicles. The usefulness of the invention is not limited to this particular application, but the use of these door panels in automobiles is mentioned by way of illustration since this presents a very large field of usefulness.
One of the features of theinvention has to do with the provision of a panel having a protected edge portion soas to prevent the entrance of water and other moisture into the body of the panel.. The manufacture of these panels from leather and other high grade materials is becoming more and more expensive and undesirable because of the increase in cost of such materials and the difficulty of securing them in sufficiently large quantities to meet the full needs of the market. One of the objects of the present invention is to provide a door panel which can be built up from relatively cheap materials procurable in large quantities, such as, paste board, straw board, etc., but which panels when finished should be very durable and of water proof construction, the appearance of which should compare favorably with the appearance of. panels made from high grade materials.
Other objects and uses of the invention will appear from a detailed description of the same which consists in the features of construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 shows a face view of a panel embodying the features of the present invention; I
Fig. 2 shows an enlarged fragmentary section taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1 looking in the direction of the arrows; and
Fig. 3 shows a view similar to that of Fig. 2 with the exception that it illustrates a modified type of panel.
The panel of the present invention includes a body sheet or board 4 of artificial composition, such as, paste board, straw board, etc., cut to the size and contour to meet the requirements of the particular panel which 1s,to be made therefrom. A suitable shape is that shown in Fig. 1.
To the front face of this board is applied va sheet of cloth or. other water proof fabric 5, the edge portion 6 being folded or turned over and lapped down on the back side as at 7. In'order to permit this edge portion to be lapped over in this manner it is provided with corner incisions or the like 8 as clearly illustrated in Fig. l.
On the back face of `the board there is provided a sheet of Water proof material 9, such as, oil paper, or paper having a surface of water proof paint. This oil water proofing sheet 9 is applied to the back of the body 4 before the 4edge 7 of the front sheet is turned over and applied, thereby insuring an absolutely water proof construction in .the edge and back portions when the panel is completed.
In`` the modified lconstruction shown in Fig. 3,'I have placed a padding 10 between the body 4 and the front sheet 5, said padding serving to give an appearance of finish and life to the completed panel. It will also be observed that in both Figs. 2 and 3 the front sheet 5 is shown as b ing corrugated or roughened. This corrugting or roughening gives the completed panel more nearly the appearance of leather or other High grade material.
I claim: Y
v 1. As a new'article of manufacture, a door panel comprising' a sheet of `non-metallic composition body 'material eut to the appropriate size and contour, a sheet of water proof material applied to the back face thereof, and a sheet of fabric extending over the front faceof the panel having its edge portion lapped over the edge of the body I sheet and laid down and secured to the back face ofthe water proof backing sheet, substantially as and for the purpose described.
vsubstantially as described.
