MW ATTORNEY.
UNITED STATES CHARLES A. BAILEY, OF CROMWELL, CONNECTICUT;
TOY PISTOL.
Application filed May 28,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES A. BAILEY, a citizen of the United States, residing in Cromwell, in the county of Middlesex and State of Connecticut have invented a new and Improved Toy Pistol, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to that class of toys used for exploding so-called paper caps, and an object of my invention, among others, is to provide a device of this class having special means for feeding a strip or tape having caps disposed at intervals therealong.
One form of device embodying my invention, and in the construction and use of which the objects herein set out, as well as others, may be attained, is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a toy pistol embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is a top view of the same.
My improved toy pistol, as illustrated in the drawings herein, embodies a frame comprising a receiver 5 having a barrel portion 6 projecting forwardly therefrom and a handle 7 extending downwardly from its rear end. A special feature of my inven tion includes a cap feeding anvil wheel so,
constructed that invits operation it will feed a tape having caps disposed at intervals along its length into position to be struck by a hammer acting against the wheel toexplode the caps. In the structure herein shown this cap feeding anvil wheel 8 has several faces 9, six faces being shown, against which a hammer 10 strikes under the force of a spring 11. A feeding guide 12 is located to cooperate with the wheel in its feeding action, the paper tape 13 extending between the wheel andthe guide and beingfed along by contact of the wheel with the guide.
In the preferred form of construction, and as shown herein, this guide is pressed with more or less force against the wheel. The guide itself may have spring qualities sufiiclent to press it against the wheel with the desired force, the ends of this spring guide being secured as in clips 14. It is also preferred, although this is not absolutely essential, that this guide shall conform to a considerable extent to the shape of the wheel,- and, as shown herein, the guide Specification of Letters Patent.

is of angular shape to fit two adjacent faces of the wheel. By such construction the tape is held snugly against the wheel and the sharp corners of the wheel act to bite into the tape and thereby feed it along. The spring pressure of the guide against the tape also prevents fire from being communicated to unexploded caps on the tape. The end of this guide may be provided with a short lip 15 bent outwardly and serving as a means for releasing the tape, as for the purpose of adjusting its position on the guide. This lip also serves as a guard to prevent fire from flashing'downwardly and burning the trigger finger of the operator, that acts against the trigger 16, which trigger, in the structure herein illustrated, is an integral part of the hammer. The tape may be comprised in a roll 17 mounted on a roll support 18 projecting from the frame.
ny desired means for; rotating the wheel tion comprising ratchet teeth 19 formed on the side of the wheel in position to be engaged by a feeding arm 20 extendingfrom the hammer structure.
The operationwill be readily understood from the foregoing description from which it will be seen that each time the wheel'is given a onestep movement two of its corners will be pressed into the substance of the tape against the pressure of the guide 12, and the tape will thus be caused to move along the guide to position the caps thereon for impact of the hammer against the anvil wheel 8.
To provide for the bulges on the tape caused by the caps and permit the guide 12 to rest snugly against the surface of the wheel I make depressions in the wheel or guide to receive said bulges, in the construction herein shown such depressions 21 being formed in the guide by bending the grooves extending laterally latter to form across the guide.
In accordance with the provisions of the patent statutes, I have described the principles of operation of my invention, together with the device which I now consider to represent the best embodiment thereof; but I desire to have it' understood that the device shown is only illustrative, and that the invention .may be carried out by other means.
Patented Aug. 9, 1921.
