Description

UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICEo JOHN M. MITCHELL, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN WHIP-RACKS.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 138,676, dat-ed May 6, 1873; application filed April 10, 1873. y
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN M. MITCHELL, of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Whip-Racks, of which the following is a specilication:
Nature and Object of Invention.
My invention relates to a device for the orderly suspension of whips on the wall of a stable or other room; and consists of a springrack so arranged that the whips may be suspended by simply striking. the lash end of the whip-stock. into the interstices between the standards of the rack, where it is retained and suspended by the action of wire springs, but from which it may be released by a quick pull outward and upward when the whip is wanted for use.
Description of Drawing.
Figure l isa perspective view of a whiprack embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a 1ongitudinal horizontal section of the same.
General Description.
A is a Wooden base or panel capable of being attached to a wall by screws at its corners m a" al". Standards B B', Sac., are mortised in. to this base at regular intervals along its midwidth; and through the heads or outer extremities of said standards are inserted bent springs of metallic wire C C', 85o., whose free extremities play in slots al ol', &c., cut through the base between the standards.
The slender end of the whip stock or handle, being struck by a smart blow into the interval between the springs, is retained there by them with sufficient force to support the whip, which is left suspended. (See Fig. 2, crosssection.)
I'Vhen required for use the whip is detached by an upward and outward motion of the wrist, to which the springs give way.
Claim.
A rack constructed of abase, A, standards B B', &c., springs C C', Sto., and slots d cl', &c.,
