assenso.
To all whom. it may concern:
Be it known that l, Grimoire 7. BRANT, a citizen of the United States, residing `at Canton, in the county of Stark and State ot' '(hio, have invented a new and useful Rail- Joint Box, of which the following is a speciication.y
This invention relates to a rail joint box especially adapted for use at rail joints upon paved streets.
The objects of the invention are the provision ot' a box at each rail joint, a removable lid being provided upon said box whereby access may be quickly and readily had to the rail joint in order to tighten the bolts; the box being located in the paving, the necessity of tearing up the paving around each joint at frequent intervals in order to tighten the bolts at the joint, and to ballast under the ties, being thus obviated.
lVith these objects in view the invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement ot parts hereinafter described illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claims, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion and details of construction may be made without departing from the invention.
ln the accompanying dra-wings;
Figure 1 is a plan view oit section ot railway track showing the rail joint applied thereto,
Fig. 2 a transverse sectional view through the joint provided with a box embodying the invention,
Fig. 3 a perspective view of the box; and
Fig. 4 a plan view of the same.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several VIQVVS.
Referring to the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawing the rails such as are often used upon street railways which are located on paved streets, are indicated by the numeral 1.
The splice-pieces 3 and l are of the usual construction with the exception that the splice-piece 3 is provided with a horizontal liange 5 which extends beyond the edge of the rail head, while the splice-piece 41- is provided with an4 upwardly disposed flange 6 arranged to engage the, adjacent side of the rail head. The usual bolts 7 are provided for connecting the ends of adjoining rails to the splice-pieces.
Specification of i.ettcrs Patent.
Patented Auen 9, 1921.
Application filed September 7, 1920. Serial No. 408,409.
Boxes 8 and 9 are placed upon the ties 10, each of said boxes having an open side located toward the adjacent s'plicc-piece, thus making the bolts and nuts accessible through said boxes. The box 3 is similar to the lbox 9 with the exception that the end walls thereot are shaped to coliform to the removable cover plate 11 which is off-set as shown at 12 in order that the inner edge thereof may rest upon the flange 5 ot' the adjacent splicepiece, screws 13 or the like being providedtor detachably connecting the off-set edge of the cover plate to said flange.
The cover plate 14 upon the box 9 is arranged to be positioned upon the top of the box flush with the head of the rail and with the surrounding paving 15, the inner edge of said cover plate resting upon the lange of the adjacent splice-piece, screws 13 being provided for detachably connecting the cover plate to the splice-piece. Each ot the cover plates is provided with a longitudinal rib 1G upon its outer edge arranged'to ena corresponding groove 17 in the outer wall ot the box, these ribs and grooves, in connection with the screws 13, holding the cover plates securely in place upon the boxes. The bottom wall ot each box is provided with an enlarged opening 18 through which access may be had to the ties and the ballast.
A. hoolr portion 19 is provided upon the' inner edge oit each end wall oi each of the boxes and arranged to engage the adjacent splice-piece as best shown in Figs. 3 and 1l, the upper rib of each splice-piece being cut away at each end as shown at 20 in order to allow said hook portions to be positioned around the ends of the splice-piece.
' From the above description and an inspection of the accompanying drawings it will be evident that a device is provided which may be easily installed at a small cost and by means ot which access may be readily had to the bolts 7 whenever it becomes necessary to tighten said bolts. With the usual form ot trac-k construction now in use upon paved streets, it is necessary to tear up the paving surrounding each rail joint, at frequent intervals, in order to tighten the bolts which are provided at the rail joints as the continual wear upon the tracks causes the bolts to loosen. l/Vith the present construe tion it is only necessary to remove the screws 13 and litt the cover plates Jfrom the boxes in order to have access to the bolts and the nuts thereon, it not beingneeessary to tear-up any of the paving surrounding the rail joint.
I elaimz- Y l.v In combination with a rail joint surrounded by paving, a box open upon its inner side,' hooks upon opposite ends of said open side arranged to be hooked around the ends of a Splice-piece of the joint to hold the box in positionv and a removable cover for the boX. V` l f 2. In combination with a rail joint surrounded by paving, a box open upon Vits, inner side and connected to a splice-piece oi y the oint, one Wall of the box having an intei-ier, horizontal groove near its `-upperledge and aV removable coverhaving a rib upon one edge arranged to be seated in the said groove,
the opposite edgeV portion of' the cover being "connected to the upper edge of the ad- Yjacent Wallv of the box.
