STRIKE-OFF FOR ROAD FINISHING MACHINES.
APPLICATION FILED AUG.21 I920.

of the road, such rails or guides at the sides of .UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GLENWAY MAXOIhT, JR., OF MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN."
' STRIKE-OFF FOR ROAD- FINISHING MACHINES Application Tiled- August 21 T all whom it may concern.-
GLENWAY MAXoN, Jr., a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Visconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Strike-Offs for Road-Finishing Machines, of which the fol lowing is a description reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which are a part of this specification.
he invention relates to a strike ofi device forroad-finishing machines.
In road-finishing machines the strike off functions to smooth off the uneven surface as a concrete road, prior-to thetamping operation and as the machine. advances. Machines of this character are usually provided with wheels which run on the road. In such machines the forces imparted to the framework of the machine througha single reciprocating strike ofi' sets up objectionable strains and stresses in the machine, and to obviate this ditliculty I have provided a strike off device in which the strike off is composed of sections which ;I nove1- toward and away from each other and thereby counterbalance their reciprocal'effectan'd thus relievethe frame and the rails of objectionable strains.
he invention further consists in the several features hereinafter set forth and more particularly defined by claims at the con-- clusion hereof.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is an end view of the device embodying the invention; Fig. 2 is a detail top View, parts being broken away and parts being shown in section F 3 is a section taken on the line 33 of Be it known that I,
%n the drawings the numeral 4 designates generally the framework of tthe machine which is mounted on wheels 5 that run on rails or guides 6. The framework and wheels together with the drivingmechanism (not particularly shown) are shown'in m copending application, Serial No. 353,721, filed January 24, 1920, with which the strike off device involving this invention may be used, though it is to be understood that the strike off device hereinafter described may be used in connection with other road-finishing machines. I
The strike off consists of two strike ofl' members? and 8 which are suspended from the frame by means of rods 9 and chains 10 Specification of Letters Patent.

on the respective strike against the concrete which is upright position 19 plvotally secured at their .ried by one of said Patented Au 2, 1921. 405,082.
at their inner ends while their outer ends are free to slide over the top of th'e guides 6. ese sections 7 and 8 are "reciprocated of eccentrics l2 l4 and l centrics and 13 and connecting rods which operatively connect the ee- 12 and 13 to bracket arms 16 and 17 off members 7 and 8. e eccentrics are arranged at 180 pointed out, rails of objectionable strains. is secured to the member 7 and sliding fit over the forward end of the member 8 so as to presenta continuous surface being acted uponby-the strike oif device.
e members 7 and '8 are each held in an by means of U-shaped links ends 20 to the back of the members 7 and 8 and pivota'lly secured intermediate their ends to eyed bolts 21 carried by the frame of themachine.
The strike off members 7 and 8 are raised and lowered by means of flexible connections 22 secured to the strike of? members and running over small winding drums 23 upon a shaft 24: which is turned by a connection with a crank 25. a
The members 7 and 8 are provided with metal edge strips or templets 26.
I desire it to be understood that this invention is not limited to any specific form oriarrangement'of parts except in so far as such limitations are specified in the claims.
that I claim'as my invention is? I 1. In aroad finishing machine, a strike oif device comprising a: plurality of recipro eating strike .oif members, and -means for moving said members transversely of the roadway toward and away, from each other.
2. In a road-finishing machine, the combination with the frame, of vice, comprising a pair of reciprocating strike ofi members disposed in the same plane, means for moving said members transversely of the roadway in opposite di-, rections to each other, and an extension carmen'fb'ei's slidable upon a strike of dethe other member.
3; In a road finishing machine, the com bination with a frame, ofa pair of strike off members suspended from the frameand positioned to extend transversely of the roadway, horizontally swinging links con necting said strike off members to the frame,
and means for reciprocating said strike off members transversely of the road in opposite directions. v-
4. In a road-finishing machine, the combination with a wheeled frame, of a pair of strike ofi' members suspended from the frame and positioned 'transverselypf the roadway in the same plane,-an extension carried by one of the members slidable upon the other, a drive shaft, connections between said shaft and said members to move them in opposite directions, and horizontally swinging links connecting said strike off members to the a frame.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature. 20
