JAMES H. HOLTZSCLAW, OF W'ICHITA, KANSAS.
ROAD-BUILDING MACHINE.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, JAMES H. HoL'rzsome, a citizen of the. United States, residing at lVichita. in the county of Sedgwick and State of ixa-nsas, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Road- Building ililachines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a road building machine, and the object is to provide means for mounting the traveling knives or drags, permitting the mounting means and drags to be connected with the frame of a motor truck of ordinary construction or with the frame of a tractor.
A further object is to provide mounting means which shall include a plurality of pairs of clamps, the clamping elements of the respective pairs being proportioned for connection with the side members of the frame of the vehicle, and adapted to support the inner ends of the drags.
A still further object isto provide mounting means of the type indicated adapted to support series of traveling knives so that the traveling elements will extend perpen dicularly of the longitudinal axis of the vehicle, for scraping material toward the center of the roadway, these traveling elements being oppositely located and receiv ing motion from the main driving mechanism of the vehicle.
With the foregoing and other objects in View, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of elements hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a top plan view of the complete machine,
Figure 2 is a vertical transverse section, taken on the plane indicated by the line 22 of Figure 1.
Figures 3 and at are detail views of the inner and outer clamping elements,
Figure 5 is a detail view in top plan showing inner clamping elements formed in two parts,
Figure 6 is a further detail described below.
machine of the general type herein indicated, constructed especially for road specification of Letters Fatent.

building purposes, is very expensive, com pared with the cost of a motor truck or tractor having suliicient capacity for performing the work necessary and provided with the necessary traveling knives and mounting means therefor, with mechanism for controlling the position of the traveling elements and means for imparting movement to the latter from the driving mechanism of the vehicle. By employing the construction herein described, the expense in cident to the purchase of a road building machine per se, and the maintenance of such a machine, is greatly reduced.
The frame of the truck is designated 10 and includes the usual parallel side members of I-bea-m construction. On the outer side of each frame member I position a clamping element 12 having a cross section suited to the frame to which it is to be applied. An inner clamping element 1% is positioned on the inner side of each frame member, and the respective elements are bolted through the frame elements to the outer clamps 12. The bolts are designated 15.
in order to provide greater rigidity, transverse brace rods 16 are employed.
As will be inferred, the two sets of clamps are mounted on the frame opposite each other, in order that the traveling knives may move in a direction transversely of the longitudinal axis of the machine, the axes of the frames supporting the traveling knives, being coincident.
The traveling elements are designated 18 and 19. and carry knives 20, serving the usual purpose, that is, scraping the surface material from the roadway from the sides toward the center. The frames for support ing the traveling elements are designated 21 and 22. The inner portions of the frames are mount-ed for swinging movement, and for adjustment vertically by means of devices shown in the drawings and including threaded shafts or screws designated 25.
The shafts of the traveling elements are shown at 26 and 27, the two inner shafts or those adjacent to the frame of the truck, being driven by means of chains or belts 30, from the main driving mechanism of the motor vehicle.
In Figure 5 I have shown the inner clamping devices each formed in two sections and it is obvious that other changes, alterations or additions may be made within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed is:
1. The combination with the main frame of a motor vehicle, of detachable clamping devices connected with the frame and located opposite each 0th r, bracing elements connecting the clamping devices on opposite sides of the frame. and traveling knives adjustably connected with the clamping elements and extending in a path transversely of the path of movement of the machine.
2' The combination with the main frame of motor vehicle, of a plurality of pairs of clamping elements, each pair being connected with one of the elements of the frame and the pairs being oppositely located, a plurality of sets of traveling knives, and means for adj ustably connecting said knives with the aforesaid clamping elements, and means for imparting movement to the traveling knives in direction transversely of the path of movement of the vehicle.
The combination with the side elements of the frame of a motor vehicle, of clamping elements secured to opposite sides of each frame element, a frame connected with each outer clamping element and adapted for movement about an axis extending horizontally and longitudinally of the frame first named, traveling knives mounted within each of the second named frames, and means for effecting the vertical adjustment of the second named frames.
4. The combination With the side elements of the frame of a motor vehicle, of clamping elements secured to opposite sides of each frame element, a frame connected with each outer clamping element and adapted for clamping elements oppositely located ad-v jacent to the inner portions of the frame members. clamping elements on the outer sides of said frame members, all of said clamping elements being proportioned to effect intimate engagement with the frame members, means for connecting the inner clamping elements with each other, means for connecting the inner clamping elements with the outer clamping elements on the corresponding side of the frame, and means for adjustably mounting road surfacing devices on the aforesaid outer clamping elements.
6. The combination with the main frame of a motor vehicle, of a plurality of endless traveling devices, knives carried thereby, means for imparting movement to the travcling devices from the driving mechanism of the motor vehicle, frames for the travelin devices, clamping elements detachably connected with the frame members for mounting the second named frames, and means for adjusting the position of the second named frames vertically.
in testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES H. 'HOLTZSCLAW.
