9 Claims.
This invention relates to improvements'in con' crete placement apparatus.
The main objects of this invention are:
First, to provide a machine or apparatus for the placement of concrete such as pavements, concrete slabs, the walls of ditches, conduits, or the like.
Second, to provide a machine or apparatus which is capable of a wide range of adjustment to meet particular conditions such as engineering specifications, formula of material placed, and the like. y
Objects relating to details and economies of the invention will appear from the description to follow. The invention is dened in the claims.-
Preferred embodiments of the invention are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. .1 is a vertical longitudinal section of a machine or apparatus embodying the features of my invention on line I-I of Fig. 2, certain of the parts being conventionalized for convenience in illustration.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary front elevation.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary plan view.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary section showing a modified form or embodiment particularly in the mounting of the vibrating rotor.
In the embodiment of my invention illustrated in the accompanying drawings, the reference numeral I indicates the main carriage of a paving machine provided with carrying wheels 2 adapted to travel on the longitudinal form members 3. The paving machine I is provided with a reciprocating screed designated generally by the numeral 4 and comprises a shoe 5 and a face plate 6, the face plate being adapted to support a substantial amount of material to be treated.
The screed is reciprocated by suitable means including the crank 1 and pitmans 8. The screed is advanced with the carriage, thrust sustaining rollers 9 being provided. The screed is provided with forwardly and outwardly converging wings ID which overhang the side forms 3.
I provide an auxiliary vibratory element carrying frame which in this embodiment comprises the end or side members II which are adjustably secured by means of clamps I2 and I3 tothe push bars I4 which are pivotally mounted on the main carriage at I5. The end members II are connected by the tubular transverse frame member I6. This auxiliary carriage is provided with wheels Il which are carried by wheel supporting brackets I8 pivoted at I9 on the frame side members II and operatively connected to a hydraulic motor designated generally by the numeralV 20 by means of the link 2l. I have illustrated only one end of this carrying frame. It will be understood that the other is 'a substantial duplicate thereof, the hydraulic motor 28 being connected to a link corresponding to the link 2| at the other side of the machine by means of the rockshaft 22 which is arranged within the tubular frame member IG. 'I'his rockshaft is connected to the motor 20 by means of the arm 23, a corresponding arm at the other end of the rockshaft being 1 connected to a link corresponding to the link 2 I.
An adjustable stop 24 is provided to limit the clockwise swing of the wheel carriers I8 about pivot I9 and thus determine thelowered position of the vibratory member. This stop, however, is capable of a wide range of adjustment.`
Bolted to the top of bar I4 is an automatic cutoil switch IGI actuable through a tappet |62 engaged by an abutment on rock shaft 22 when the shoe is elevated by the fluid matter to inoperative position, whereby to prevent destructive or undue shaking thereof by the vibrator when the shoe is out of engagement with the work.
The vibratory member designated generally by the numeral 25 comprises a horizontal shoe 26 of substantial width. This shoe is provided with a face plate 21 of such height as to rearwardly sustain for advancement a substantial amount of material to be treated as is illustrated in Fig. 1.
A plurality of spaced vertical plate-like vibratory members 28 are secured to the face plate to project substantially forward therefrom and these have narrowed portions 29 extending transversely below the shoe. These plates 28 are arranged in spaced parallel relation and constitute auxiliary vibratory members and provide a plurality of pockets 30 at the front of the face plate adapted to receive and advance material being treated, the members 28 coacting with theface plate to effectively vibrate this material and to transmit vibrationsbeyond the confines of the pockets a substantial distance into the material. These plates have enlargements 32 of rounded section on their outer edges, these enlargements serving the purpose of reinforcing the plates and also presenting an enlarged surfa'ce to receive wear and to transmit vibrations. f
The vibratoryelement is provided with a top plate 33 which serves as an eifectivehousing for the vibrating unit 34 which in this case-is an electric motor, the rotor 35 of which is provided with an unbalancing weight 36. y
In the embodiment of Fig. l, the axis of the rotor is disposed longitudinally of the vibratory element, the motor being mounted on suitable brackets 37 rigidly secured to the shoe and face plate of the vibratory element.
In the embodiment shown in Fig. 4, the axis of the rotor is disposed transversely of the vibratory element. The vibratory element in both embodiments is supported from the auxiliary frame by the flexible non-extensible hangers 38 which permit free vibratory movement thereof and is also provided with a flexible non-extensible draft member 39. By thus mounting the vibratoryelement it may be vertically adjusted relative to the material and relative to the screed 4 and also adjusted to and from the screed, this latter adjustment being effected by adjusting the clamps l2 and I3 on the push bars Il.` It is preferred, however, that the heel of the vibratory member 4be spaced from the screed so that the material treated by the vibratory element may flow upwardly in front of the screed as indicated at lll.
I have illustrated and described my machine or apparatus for the placement of concrete in a very practical embodiment thereof. I have not attempted to illustrate or describe other embodiments or adaptations as it is believed that this disclosure will enable those skilled in the art to embody or adapt the same as may be desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
