ONE-PIEQE BUTTON AND BUCKLE. APPLICATION l-lLiD MAR. 29. 1920..

A TTORNE Y V INVENTOR m UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ERNEST A. ESSMUELLER AND LEWIS D. HUGS-INS, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
ONE-PIECE BUTTON AND BUCKLE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ERNEST A. EssrrUnLLnn and Ln-wrs D. Hneorns, both citi- Zens of LllE United States, residing in tle city of St. Louis'and State of Missouri, have invented new and useful Improvements in One-Piece Buttons and Buckles, of which the following is a. specification, reference bein had to the accompanying drawings.
The present invention is in the nature of a one piece button and buckle, for use as a fastening on garments and straps and in the making -t garments. I y
The primary object of the fill 811E011 is to provide an eiiicient fastening in the way of a one piece button and buckle which may be strongly and cheaply constructedin one piece, or stamped out from onepiece of sheet metal.
A secondary object is to provide a r astening of this nature, the buckle portion of which may be permanently tached to one portion of the garment or to one end or" the strap, while the button portion may be detachably locked in a button hole formed 1n another portion oi"- the garment or in the other end or the strap.
With these ends in view, attention is called to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a plan view of such a one piece button and buckle.
Fig. 2 is an edge view.
Fig. 3 is a. perspective view showing the fastening as mounted upon and adapted to connect the two ends of a strap.
Fig. l is a detail showing how the teeth of the buckle portion engage the strap.
Tn carrying out the invention in itsembodiment as illustrated in the drawings, we take a single piece of sheet metal and stamp same out so as to form a rectangular buckle portion consisting of frame 1 having a central cross bar 2, and an integral button portion 3 which is connected to the buckle portion by means of a narrow neck portion at. The cross bar 2 is provided with teeth 5 punched downward from the cross bar 2 and adapted to pierce through the strap 6, or other material, andv then to be pressed Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 369,552.
back firmly against the strap, for the purpose of locking that end of the strap firmly to the buckle. The button 3 is preferably convexo-concave, being convex at its upper or outer side and concave at its lower or inner side, thus forming a smooth and buttonlike appearance, and at the same time adding strength to the structure. The neck 4 is bent slightly out at its point of juncture with the button 3, as means for more readily and smoothly engaging the button hole 7 formed in the opposite end of the strap 6, while the forward end of the button itself is bent slightly downwardly or inwardly. This construction has been found to most efiiciently serve the purpose of such a fastener.
lVhile we have herein described a certain specific method of constructing and assemling the elements of our invention, it is understood same may be varied in minor details, not departing from the spirit of our invention as defined in the appended claims.
'l'Vha-t we claim to be new and patent able is:
1. The combination of a strap having a button hole at one end, a one piece buckle and button having in its buckle portion a bar intermediate its ends, the opposite end of the strap being clenched to said bar, the button being spaced from the buckle portion by a reduced neck bent slightly outwardly its outer end to ofiset a portion of the button from the longitudinal axis of the buckle portion, the outer part of the button lying substantially in the plane of the buckle portion.
2. The combination of a strap having a button hole in one end, a buckle and button connected together by a reduced neck portion, the buckle portion having a bar intermediate its ends, the bar having teeth struck up therefrom, the opposite end of said strap being secured to said bar by said teeth.
