Specification 01' Letters Patent. Patented July 26-, 1921;
Application filed liarch 26, 1918. Serial No. 224,849.
To aZZ'whomit mag concern:
Be it lmown t at I, MAnsHAL L. Coon- RAN, a citizen of the United States of Amer-- ica, residing at Grand Rapids, in the-county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bench- Stools, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates particularly to stools to be used in conjunction with work benches, provide as its principal object, a stool of this character having an adjustable back, so that the back may be shifted to various positions to provide for a restful attitude for the user of the stool.
Another object is to provide a stool of this character having a lockerbelow the seat.
Still another object is to provide a stool made entirely of metal, in order that it masy offer great resistance to wear.
ill another object is to provide a stoolwhich is simple in construction, durable and effective in use and inexpensive to manufacture.
Still further and other objects will be made to appear in the detail description which follows.
To the exact construction in which the invention is shown it is not to be confined. Certaiirdesirable changes or alteration may be made manifest in the continued practical use of the invention and the right is reserved to make any which do not deviate from the scope of the subjoined claims.
In the accompanying drawings:. Figure 1 is a perspective view of the im- Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view. Referring to the drawings, the stool is provided w1th four legs 1 which are me e preferably of an le iron. The legs are interconnected near t eir .bot-
-tom ends'by braces 2 which are also made preferably of angle iron, the braces be riveted or otherw se suitably attached to the legs. The seat of the stool eomiprises a plate 3 on the i e of which the anges formed. Ti e seat is designed to sit on top 'of the legs and the flanges 4 are riveted or otherwise suitably attached to the flanges of the angle irons of which the legs are made. A locker is formed below the 'seat' 3, the sides of the locker comprising plates 5 whose upper edges abut the bottom of the seat and the vicinity 4 arev forward or backward,
whose ends are riveted or otherwise attached to the legs. The back of the locker comprlses a p ate wa as the plates 5. The bottom of the 100 or compnses a plate 7 on three edges of which flanges 8 are formed, these flanges being provided for riveted'or suitable means for attachment to the plates 5 and 6 at the bottom edges thereof. The front of the locker is closed by a door 9 which is hingedly connected to the bottom 7 the bottom having no flange on the edge where the door connects with it. A look 10 is provided near the upper edge of the door for lockingthe same in a closed position, the free edge of the door being just below-the seat 3 and the door being adapted to swing downwardly when moving from-the closed to the opened position.
The backof the stool comprises an inverted U-shaped frame made of material which is rectangular in cross section, the legs 11 of the frame being pivot-ally connected at their free ends to the back legs of the stool not far above the bottom 7 of the locker. The U-shaped frame is adapted to hold the backplate 12 of the stool which com rises a metal plate on whose two side edges 8 being riveted or otherwise suitably attached to the le 11 of the U-shaped frame.
To eac of the legs 11 and at a point in of the seat 3, there is ivotally connected one end of a bar 14 WhlCh is rectangular in cross section,'this bar near one end and opening at its loweredge being provided with a series of arcuate slots 15 6 which is attached in the same anges 13 are formed, these flanges both sides of the seat areprovited with 4 studs 16 and the bars 14 connected with the legs 11 of the backareadapted to engage the studs, thus holding the back in various angular positions with respect to the seat,
depending on which of the slots 15 the studs 16 engage.
It will be observed that by means of the bar 14 the-back of the stool may be shifted the adjusting of the back suitable to the position which the workman assumes when thus providing for working at various machine tools or at the bench, the operation of adjusting the back consisting simply in raising the free ends of the bars 14: to efiec't their disengagement with certain of the slots 16, whereupon the desired osition of the back can be found,
. after WhlCh the lowering of the bars 14- perstrengthening the legs of the stool and also.
provides asuitable foot rest for the workman. I
The arrangement of a locker provides a convenient compartment in which the workman may keep such tools as he'may g not care. to have disturbed. ,The foregoin description taken in conjunction with t e accompanying drawings makes further explanation of the invention 1 unnecessary.
The inventlon haying been described what is claimed as new and useful is:
' A device of the kind set forth comprising legs made from angle iron, angle iron braces interconnecting the legs near their bottom ends, a plate having depending flanges on its four edges, the plate resting ontop of the legs and the flanges being attached thereto, plates positioned just below the aforesaid plate and connected between certain pairs of legs, astill further plate having upturned flanges by means of which it is connected to the latter plates, and a door plate hingedly connected to the last named plate and provided with means 'for locking enagement with one of the depending flanges of the first named plate.
In testimon whereof I aflix my si ature.
