The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in articles of combina tion furniture.

It is one of the objects of the present invention to provide an article of combination furniture which may be employed either as a stool, or as a relatively low stepladder.

It is a further object of the invention so to construct the device that when used as a stepladder, it will be both firm and stable, and will present a plurality of steps.

It is a further object of the invention so to construct the device that when used as a stool, it will be firm and stable, and the elements thereof which form the steps when employed as a stepladder will not interfere with the legs of a person using the stool.

Other objects of the invention will appear as the nature of the same is better understood, and in this connection, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings, wherein:

Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating the device as employed as a stool,

Figure 2 is a perspective view of the device illustrating the same used as a stepladder,

Figure 3 is a vertical sectional view illustrating in dotted lines the manner in which the device is moved to form the stepladder.

Figure 4: is a similar view illustrating a further movement of the device, and

Figure 5 is a vertical sectional view illustrating the device used as a stepladder, and illustrating in dotted lines the movable member thereof in one of its positions during its movement to the full line position shown in this figure.

Referring more particularly to the drawings, the device comprises two members A and B. The member A constitutes a base and consists of a plurality of legs connected together by suitable rungs or braces 11. This member A is an open like structure, and the member B is pivotally mounted within the member A. The upper ends of the legs of the member A are connected by relatively wide braces 12, and connected to these relatively wide braces 12 at the forward portion of the upper end of the member A, there is a transversely extending rod 13 and this rod 1931. forms the means for pivotally connecting the members A and B together for operation in a manner to be hereinafter described.

The member B consists of a box like struc-- ture having two side walls 14 and end walls 15 and 16. Intermediate the ends walls 15 and 16, there is a partition member 17, and the end walls 15 and 16 and the partition member 17 form the steps of the stepladder when the device is arranged for use as such and the reverse face of the wall 16 forms the seat or the like 18 forthe stool when the device is used as a stool.

The side walls 1 1- of the member B are provided with angularly disposed slots or the like 19 and these slots terminate at each end in an angularly disposed portion 20 as best illustrated in Figures 3 to 5 of the drawings. These slots 19 are adapted to receive the transversely extending rod 13 heretofore mentioned and together therewith provide the means for pivotally connecting the members A and B together.

In Figure 1 of the drawings, the device is shown as used as a stool, and in this position the member B is housed entirely within the member A as illustrated.

lVhen it is desired to employ the device as a st-epladder, the member B is grasped and is slightly. elevated to raise its lower end above the front rung 11 of the member A. When this has been done the member B may be moved upwardly and outwardly to the dotted line position in which it is shown in Figure 3. From this position it is rocked about the rod 13 as illustrated in dotted lines in Figures A and 5, and is finally moved to a completely reversed position as illustrated in full lines in Figure 5, the rod 13 passing to the opposite ends of the slots 19 and received in the opposite angular portions 20 thereof. As the member B moves to the full line position shown in Figure 5, notches formed in the forward edge of the member B receive a transversely extending rung or rod 26 and this rod together with the rod 13 form the means for supporting the member B in the full line position shown in Figure 5, and by reason of the angular disposition of the portion 20 of the slot 19 which receives the rod 13, movement of the member B relative to the member A is prevented except upon intent of the operator.

When it is desired to use the device as a stool, the movement of the member B relative to the member A as just described is reversed and the member A will receive the member B as illustrated in Figure 1.

It will be noted that when the device is employed as a stepladder, the end walls 15 and 16 and the intermediate partition 17 of the member B form the steps of the ladder.

lVhen used as a stool, it will be noted that the intermediate partition is cut away and indicated at 27 in Figures 1 and 3, and by this construction this forward edge is positioned well within the box like member B and thus interference with the legs of a person sitting upon the stool is obviated.

While the invention has been herein disclosed in a preferred form, it is to be understood that the invention is not to be limited to r the specific construction and details herein disclosed, but that it may be practiced in other forms withoutdeparting from the spirit.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new and what it is desired to secure by Letters-Patent of the United States,

1. In a structure of the class described, a frame having legs, side members, a transverse rod joining the side members and an open n top, a movable supporting section provided with slots having the end portions thereof extendlng angularly 111 opposite ClIIGCtIOIIS" and I'BCGIVIDO said transverseconnecting rod whereby the supporting section is pivotally and slidably connected to said frame thereby allowing the side section to be swung to a position extending above the frame, and a connecting rung in the path of movement of the side walls of said supporting section.

In 'a structure of the class described, a frame having legs, side members, a transverse rodjoining the side members and an open top, a movablesupporting sectionprovided with slots having the end portions thereof extending angularly'in opposite directions and receiving said transverse con: necting rod whereby the supporting section is pivotally and. slidably connected to said frame thereby allowing the side section to be swung to a position extending above. the

frame, and a connecting runin the path of movement of the side walls of said supporting section, the side walls of said supporting section being provided with notches receiving said rung.
