D. G. RAUVB.
Bedsteads.
Patented May 6,1873.
J 1 e H UNITED, STATES PATENT Orrrcn D. CHRISTIAN RAUB, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
IMPROVEMENT IN BEDSTEADS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 138,582, dated May 6, 1873 application filed September 13, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, D. CHRISTIAN RAUB,
of the. city of St. Louis, county of St. Louis,
State of Missouri, have invented certain Improvements in Bedsteads, of which the foliron rods, with screw-threads and nuts. The
bottom of the bedstead, upon which the mattress rests, is formed of rope stretched over pulleys which are fastened to the cross-pieces. This rope can be kept at any desired tension by means of ratchets and ratchet-wheels attached to a shaft placed either at the head or the foot of the bedstead, as may be found most convenient.
In order to describe my invention more fully, 1 will refer to the accompanying drawmg. Figure I is a side view of a bedstead embodying my invention. Fig. II is a plan view of the same. Fig. III is a detached view of one of the ratchets and ratchet-wheels. Fig. IV is a detached view of one of the pulleys attached to the same.
A A A A represent the four posts of the bedstead Z, formed of three pieces of metallic tubes, a, b, and c. The center pieces a are made larger in diameter than the others, so as to admit the pieces a and 0 being screwed or fastened into the same. B B O O are side pieces. DD E E are cross-pieces, formed also of metallic tubes or pipes attached to pieces I) of the posts A in the following manner: The side and cross pieces are first held or placed in their proper positions, as in Fig. I; then rods cl are passed through the center of the pieces, and also through the pieces b of the post A. On the outer ends of these rods are placed nuts 0. This being done, the nuts are screwed up, which draws all the parts close together, and thus holds them firmly in their places.
To give additional strength to the bedstead, braces F are placed between the two posts on both sides of the bedstead, and also fastened to the lower side pieces, as shown in Fig. I.
G are a number of small pulleys pivoted to the sleeves H and passed over the cross-pieces D and E. The pulley-block sheaves are made concave, or their peripheries hollowed out to receive the rope I, and also to prevent the same from slipping off from the sheaves. Both ends of the rope I are attached to pulleys L and O, which are fastened to the shaft or axle P, placed a trifle below the side pieces B and O, and held by means of the sleeves It and S. On the outer sides of the pulleys L and O are placed ratchet-wheels T T. U U are ratchets working into these ratchet wheels and fastened to the cross-pieces D, as in Fig. III. On the outer end of the shaft or axle P is placed a crank, V, having thereto attached a handle, W.
To apply the rope I, one end of the same is fastened to the pulley, L, the other is passed around the pulley-blocks G, as in Fig. II, and then fastened to the pulley 0. By turning the crank V the rope can be tightened at any required tension. Should the rope become slack by use, all that is required is to turn the crank a few revolutions.
My improved mode of placing the rope between pulleys, and the employment of a ratchet-wheel, ratchet, and crank, in order to give the same any required tension, is as well applicable to any other bedstead asto the one herein described, by simply employing a separate frame, to which the rope, ratchet-wheel, ratchet, and crank is attached.
By this arrangement an iron bedstead is formed which readily can be taken. apart for transportation, and just as readily be put together. v
Having thus fully described my invention, I desire to claim 1. A bedstead, Z, constructed of the tubular side pieces B B, O O, the tubular crosspieces D D E E, the posts A A A A, the rods (1, the nuts 6, and the braces F, substantially as and for the purpose hereinbefore set forth. 2. The bedstead Z, in combination with the pulleys G, the rope I, the pulleys L and O,
ratchet-wheels T T, ratchets U U, the shaft P, p
and crank V, substantially as and for the pur pose hereinbefore set forth. 7
Witnesses: D. CHRISTIAN RAUB.
L. L. WALBRIDGE, JAMES F. ALLEN.
