Cotton'Bale Ties. I
N0.138,492. PatentedMay6,1873.

W @Ja,
UNITED STATES PATENT 'QFFIIGE.
WILLIAM D. FIELD, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
IMPROVEMENT IN COTTON-BALE TIES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 138,492, dated May 6, 1873; application filed March 24, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM D. FIELD, of the city and county of Providence, in the State of Ithode Island, have invented a new and Improved Cotton-Tie; and I do hereby declare that the following specification, taken in connection with the drawing making a part of the same, is a full, clear, and exact descripcotton-tie more durable than those now in use,
and, at the same time, capable of being more easily adjusted; and consists in the device hereinafter described.
The ties now in most common use are made with a slot, open upon one side, into which the looped strap is slipped after the bale is sufficiently compressed. The slot being open upon one side the entire strain comes upon the other, and not unfrequently a sufficient leverage is thus afforded to break the tie.
In my invention A, Fig. 1, is the plate as it comes from the die, the ends of which are bent together so as to form two hollow projecting arms, B and B, as shown in Figs. 2
and 3, and unite the two slots, 0 and O, in a single slot, D. In connection with the hollow extended arms B and B I make use of a crossbar, E, as hereinafter described-the crossbar E being provided with a slot, F, which slides upon the pin G and prevents it from becoming detached and lost.
The operation of my invention is as follows: The strap, one end of which being attached to the tie through the slot D, is placed around the bale; after the bale has received the necessary compression a loop is made in the other end of the strap and placed between the two M hollow projecting arms, 13 and B, when the crossbar E, being driven in, passes through the said loop and securely holds the strap.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A cotton-tie formed from a single plate, and having the slot and two hollow projecting arms, B and B, as described, for the purposes specified.
2. The crossbar E in combination with the hollow projecting arms 13 and B, the whole arranged and operating in themanner substantially as described.
WILLIAM D. FIELD.
